I'm a 22M, and my childhood best friend is a 22F. We've been friends since we were 4 years old. I never looked at her from a romantic perspective—we were always just friends, never even flirted.

I went through a breakup about 8 months ago, and she has been single for around 3–4 months. It was her birthday two days ago, and she was feeling sad because she had recently moved to a new city. I decided to surprise her, so I booked a flight and showed up at her apartment. She was really happy to see me.

We went out clubbing that night, and when we came back, we were both drunk. Things escalated, and we ended up hooking up. The next morning was incredibly awkward. I flew back home later that same day, and we haven't spoken since.

I genuinely don't know what to think. Does she feel like I took advantage of the situation? Does she want to pretend it never happened and stop talking to me? Or is she waiting to see if this could become something more?

I have other friends, but she's different. She's one of the most important people in my life, and I really don't want to lose her.

I'm not talking about whether colonialism was morally right. I'm only asking from a development perspective. Would India today be wealthier, cleaner, have stronger institutions, less corruption, fewer paper leaks, etc.? Or would the long-term costs of colonial rule still outweigh those potential benefits?
