Is taking drop year for JEE 2028 realistic for someone starting almost from scratch? (NIOS + financially weak background)
Hey everyone.
I genuinely need some honest advice from people who have either cracked JEE or have seen people do something similar.
I'm currently studying through NIOS and I honestly didn't study PCM properly in last 2yrs because i was busy doing all i could to earn money for my treatment so you can pretty much assume I'm starting from almost zero(even with weak 10th basics so rebuilding everything as i essentially quit my studies for 6yrs from age 13 to 19 gotten some sense into me this year i was essentially and still i'm sick like i've got 13kidney stones and diabetes that is affecting my health & alot happned in my personal life so to escape all of this i started playing games and started living in entire different world to cope up with my reality basically imagined myself as what not iss saal akal aayi jab business try kiye last year but failed at it because jo itne years kuch nahi kiya my brain got all rusted ki na koi skill seekh paaya and if tutorials dekhun force karke toh 1hr ke tutorial ko lagatar dekhne huye aur samajne ka try krne mein notes banake plus with combition of lack of focus brain overload and alot alot overthinking uske 10mins ke hisse ko dekhne mein hi sara din lag jaata my brain is that cooked only solution is found is ki aise hi lage rahun bhale jitna time lage tutorials padhai ke case mein chapter ka lecture samajne mein jitna marzi samay lag jaaye aise hi capacity rebuild hogi and ill be able to study pcm)
Right now, my priority is preparing for my NIOS Class 12 exams. The NIOS syllabus includes topics from both Class 11 and 12 so I'll be studying those until my exams which will most likely end in February 2027 (especially my Maths paper).
By the time those exams are over, I'll have covered PCM at the NIOS/Class 12 level but I know that is nowhere near JEE level. My fundamentals should be much better than today but they still won't be strong enough for JEE
So here's what I'm considering:
After my NIOS exams finish in February I want to dedicate an entire drop year only to JEE preparation. I was thinking about joining Physics Wallah's Prayas batch and treating it like a full-time job
The thing is, I'll be 20 years old during that drop year so I'm wondering if it's still a realistic decision.
Another important factor is my financial situation.
My family's annual income is below ₹2 lakh, so we genuinely cannot afford private engineering colleges. Because of my income, I may be eligible for scholarships in government colleges, so getting into a good government institute is honestly a do or die situation for me.
I'm ready to study as much as required. The only non-negotiable things I'd keep in my routine are:
- 1-1.30 hour of gym(to manage diabetes else my brain nd body basically stops functioning)
- 30–40 minutes of walking
Apart from that, my entire year would be dedicated to JEE
So my questions are:
- Is it realistic for someone starting from this level to crack JEE Main in one dedicated year after finishing NIOS?
- Is getting Computer Science in an NIT a realistic target?
- Is aiming for CSE in a newer IIT completely unrealistic or is it possible if someone genuinely gives everything for that year?
- Has anyone here started almost from scratch and managed to achieve something similar?
I'm not looking for motivation or false hope. I'd genuinely appreciate honest opinions, even if they're harsh. If my goal is unrealistic I'd rather know now than waste a year. But if it's possible with the right strategy and enough effort, I'd love to hear from people who've actually done it.
Thanks in advance!

reddit.com[NO SPOILERS] Why Do We Get Tell Me Why for Free So Frequently When No Other Don't Nod Game Is?
reddit.comI honestly don’t know what to do anymore and I need real advice.
Back in 2019, when I was in 7th grade, I got seriously sick physically and mentally. Since then, I’ve mostly been bedridden for years. Because of that, I basically stopped studying completely after 7th. My brain became used to just surviving instead of learning or working.
I barely passed 10th through open schooling after failing once. I got 44% in 2024. This year I gave 12th through open schooling again, and I’ll probably barely pass. I passed Physics and Chemistry mostly because of cheating, and I’m not even fully sure about Maths.
For a long time, I genuinely didn’t even know if I wanted to live, so studies became meaningless to me.
But this year something changed. I started realizing how badly I had wasted my potential and how important education and discipline actually are. I tried multiple online businesses over the last 1–2 years because I wanted to earn enough money for treatment and to fix my life. I even managed to close a few clients for AI automation and lead generation stuff, but my work ethic completely destroyed everything.
I realized my brain literally avoids learning hard things. It automatically rejects effort. Even when I try learning something I LIKE, I struggle to stay focused. Same thing happened when I started relearning Maths basics from classes 6–10 early this year.
To give an example: it took me almost 10–12 days just to properly understand fractions. That’s how cooked my brain feels after years of isolation, overthinking, trauma, doomscrolling, movies, and basically doing nothing except suffering.
But recently I found one thing that somewhat works: forcing myself to sit in front of lectures/books no matter how uncomfortable it feels. Slowly I’m improving.
Now my question is:
Is it still worth preparing for JEE seriously?
I’ll turn 20 this December. This year’s attempt is basically gone if i pass my 12th(nios result will be released next month) I’m still fixing my maths basics. Best case scenario, I start proper 11th–12th prep around late June or July after rebuilding foundations.
Do you think it’s realistically possible for someone like me to get something like a 30–35k rank if I manage to build up to studying 7–8 focused hours daily by August/September?
And if not, would sacrificing another full year(2027) for JEE even be worth it at my age?
My long-term goal has honestly always been business. I still want to build something big someday. But my destroyed work ethic and inability to focus ruined every opportunity I had. My old business partner even left after trying for a year because I couldn’t work consistently or learn things because of yrs of brain inactivity so whenever I tried learning any skill my brain used to get into fight or flight mode and used to continuously overthink and stress coz of that i didn't sleep properly for months(same thing is happening with me rn).
The weird thing is: when I DO work properly, I actually enjoy it a lot. My brain loves learning and building things. But turning that into a routine feels impossible sometimes. Random thoughts, trauma, anxiety, and overthinking constantly interrupt me.
So I genuinely want advice from people older or more experienced than me:
- Should I go all-in on JEE, even if it takes another year?
- or is it still possible to get good rank?
- Should I focus on fixing my education while continuing business/copywriting/automation work on the side? and if i am able to earn decent will go to italy for my graduation
- Has anyone else recovered from years of isolation, mental burnout, or “brain rot” like this?
I know this post sounds messy, but I’m trying really hard to become normal again and rebuild my life from scratch.
