Do we really need the police gearing up like the military all the time?

Don't get me wrong, police should wear whatever they think they need for their job. But I see pictures of New York cops in the 70s in the toughest areas like subways and the most armor they're wearing is a leather jacket. Some of them are in short sleeve shirts, even in emergency situations. Is it a general increased trend of workplace safety, or is it the police wanting to look intimidating, and does this add to escalation of situations? Honest question.

Edit: Whoa! Touchy subject. I get that and I understand why. But please calm down everybody I'm just asking questions. I'm getting some good interesting comments that I appreciate. Thanks!

People who put atheist/Darwin stickers on your vehicle, have you had it vandalized?

I'd put an atheist sticker on my car but I'm worried about my car getting vandalized. I've heard people say it happened to them but I wonder just how common is this?

What was the cheap wine swill people bought in the 70s from the liquor store where you were from?

I grew up in Canada and here there was something called Cherry Jack that was sold by the gallon jug from pallets in the liquor store.

All the kids in the neighbourhood came running when they heard these bells ringing.

When I grew up and could afford it I bought all the Spacesicles they had.

I don't think fake eyelashes and fake nails look good.

Don't get me wrong, I think people should wear whatever they want. But I see beautiful women who would look fantastic without gigantic eyelashes glued to their eyelids and long claws glued to their hands. I think it detracts from the natural beauty they have. And when I see 11 and 12 year olds wearing massive fake eyelashes it saddens me. Are men now attracted to that? Or are women competing with themselves?

Divine command theory is horrifically evil.

Theists have to somehow force the square block into the round hole and use pretzel logic. If god is all loving, all knowing, all just, all etc., all etc., then anything he does and commands is just and moral. This is the horrific evil that is divine command theory. It justifies the killing of babies, the rape of women, owning slaves, having innocent people punished, selling your daughter as a slave, genocide, cannibalism, the list goes on and on.

In grade 10 my high school bought a box of calculators for us to use in math class. My brother one grade ahead used a slide rule.

They were pretty expensive at the time and no one had them so we grabbed them out of the box when we entered class and put them back when the class was over.

Top hole! Bally Jerry pranged his kite right in the how's your father. Hairy blighter, dicky-birdied, feathered back on his Sammy, took a waspy, flipped over on his Betty Harper's and caught his can in the Bertie.

Debating Religion: A How-To Guide

I've got a few books regarding religion and this is the best at debunking those deep and heavy, and shallow and stupid, claims and statements of theists without quoting scripture. When discussing specific scriptures, my New Oxford Annotated Bible NRSV 5th edition is great. When discussing more philosophical questions this book by Ami Toben is easy to navigate, simple to read, and does an awesome job. Answers pretty much every question a theist can throw at you. I love this book.

Posting the ten commandments in classrooms is not going to do what religious people think it will.

It's going to make kids think. When kids think, they ask questions. If they actually look into the bible and read the text, they will see how absurd and immoral it is. The best way to make atheists is to have people read the bible.

To visitors who don't know, an atheist is just someone who is not convinced there are any gods. That's it. Nothing else.

There's no shared atheist world view, no atheist dogma. Atheists are as diverse in their other beliefs and opinions as any other group. They only have ONE thing in common, non-belief in gods.

The pope has apologized for failing to condemn slavery for centuries, finally.

Not a surprise why they didn't apologize for so long. The bible says you can own people as property (the very core definition of slavery) and bequeath them to your children. You can sell your daughter as a slave. Tells you how much you can beat your slave. Tells you who you can buy as a slave. How can you apologize for something that the bible says is ok to do? Christianity is so hypocritical. Among the dozens and dozens of apologies over the years, they finally admitted this one.

This thought experiment says a lot about religion, knowledge and humans in general.

If all the textbooks on all branches of natural science disappeared today and all scientific knowledge was forgotten, the textbooks would all eventually come back saying the same basic things. If all the books of all the religions disappeared today and all religious knowledge was forgotten, religions would still come back but they'd all be totally different.
