Progress Report #2: Recording vocals myself

I recorded a version where I'm singing, which also acts as a sort of demo for what you can expect. I took inspiration for the vocal processing from Ruler of Everything, even including same sort of vocoder that song has near the end. I'll definitely improve on the mixing (maybe even the singing) when I get around to it, but for now I suck ass at it and you're gonna have to deal with it for now. Also, I changed the amplified piano back into an electric piano (although I will add a separate amplified piano track to compensate) and changed the mixing on some instruments.

That will have to be way in the future though because this project is starting to really fuck with my computer (I even had to export this twice because the playback didn't accurately convey how loud the exported audio was gonna be), and I'm not about to have it crash on me now. So this is all for now. ¡Hasta luego!

[STILL A WORK IN PROGRESS] Update on the MMMM-style cover of ITMOS: Got some solid Instrument VSTs!

The video was way too long for Reddit, but I managed to make some decent progress on the project I'm working on. I'm especially happy that I managed to get a good recreation of Zubin's bass set-up for the project.

No update today; update tomorrow

Hey, so I wanna take a break from the comic today. I’ve been feeling exhausted and I don’t wanna work myself to death over everything. Besides that, I’ve mentally exhausted myself trying to just promote this comic. So I’m taking a break today. I’ll be back tomorrow, though.

Whale Break {31}: --->

As the "scary monster thing" (or should you say "scary human") in the dark room languished under the stretch of his final breaths, under the strain of his will to continue a vain escape, he gifted unto you a parting gift: a mysterious device that he said he hoped would help him escape, because "you got farther along than most; more than I even did."

You just hope that he'll be comforted by what matters most: natural ketchup. At least you would be. You like it because it's sort of like regular ketchup, but without the high fructose corn syrup, and more tomato starch. It tastes and looks pretty much the same though (except maybe it's a bit more brown-ish. It's a smidge darker than Heinz). Whatever, it's the thought that counts! Right?

You're friends aren't that pressed about the machine or where you've been in the moment though. They instead seem to be conversing with strangers in their video game to establish when their escape took place for when (maybe if?) they're found out by staff.

[WORK IN PROGRESS] "Inside the Mind of Simon" MMMM style cover

Hey all! So, as many of you already know, "The Mind Electric" was not originally meant for Hawaii: Part II. Instead it was intended to release under Tally Hall's first album back in 2005. According to Coz Baldwin (I think), it was intended to include over 18 different instruments, including a full choir, a "distorted" grand piano, and a harpsichord (the latter of which does check out with what can be heard in the band's only known live performance of the song).

So all that had me thinking, "What would it have sounded like if it actually were on MMMM"? This question was floating in my head for a long while until I recently started making my own instrumental for it (as seen in the video). It's not 100% done yet (as I intend to add some vocals, touch up on the choir portion to be less "midi-sounding", and get some sort of some emulation for the instruments and sound design used during in the 2008 version (whenever I can afford it)). But do know that once it's done, it should sound somewhat stylistically similar to the 2008 version of "Ruler of Everything".

Hope you guys like what I've got so far!

You throw the broken shards of the unseen fallen's lenses toward what you presume to be something's face, successfully blinding it. The sound it makes, though, is unmistakably human and broken. The shrieks and winces of pain fade into low, shriveled wails of despair. The sound alone, more than any words, implies the story of another human being waiting to escape from the cruel and ghastly spirits, which has only now died, along with his ability to know any light. Said Iron Will's last words are some varying, stuttering whimper of "I only wanted to be free" and/or "I just want to know what's out there", among other such hideous noises that come with what can best be described not as a breakdown, but as a complete structural disintegration.

Whale Break {26}: Examine the broken glasses and the blood or whatever

https://preview.redd.it/knv74g4ct8gh1.png?width=650&format=png&auto=webp&s=3768c99df38c4ef8161d4005bad5e359ffe4f72f

They are exactly what they are. Evidence of another escapee having fallen for the trap set by the wardening spirits of these cave-like halls.

Cave-like in the sense that they twist and turn at every conceivable corner along the scars and tears inflicted upon it. But also in the sense that they tempt anyone trapped and chained within with the illusion of a safe escape. The shadows, the turns of each labyrinthine corridor, playing the part of dull, vaguely friendly characters welcoming the prisoners to the illusion of a nice, simple, safe world waiting for them outside.

This is evidence of a cruel world. One that allowed this man-made cavern to unceremoniously execute people for desiring a chance to rebuild and re-experience the life that they were forced into forgetting. One that allowed such a cavern to be built, and one that prevents you from experiencing the full breadth of what could possibly be out there for you were it not for these faceless spirits lingering over your every move.

Someone else got shot in the gut with an arrow while trying to escape, and they died. Now they're blood is on the walls. But, hey! It could be worse.

Whale Break {24}: make the trio find what is on the walls, and someone accidentally opens a secret latch, which opens the ps3, with a couple of games.

Thanks for the heads up, you guess?

There are a few games, two of which are unlabeled, one of which is marked as "Broken Game :(", another one you actually manage to recognize at a glance as one of those "Ratchet and Clank" games. Not that exciting for a highly-guarded and highly-fortified prison, but hey. Maybe this is what the guards do in their spare time in private?

"Whale Break" is getting its own subreddit! :D

Hey all! So, as some of you may know, a little while back, I started a series of daily posts inspired by "Jailbreak" using designs that I repurposed from a different Tally Hall-themed project. But I recently got the news from someone on the moderation team that a lot of people aren't exactly fond of having this constantly show up in their recommendations feed (which is completely fair; I'd probably be a little cranky about it, too). I figured that some sort of hiccup might happen along the way, even with the limited 1-2 post-per-day "schedule", but I didn't expect for it to happen so soon.

This doesn't mean the posts are getting removed, or that the series is canceled (I'd be insane not to finish what I've already started at this point). In fact, to my surprise, they were actually rather supportive of what I was doing! But he did recommend that if I wanted to keep doing this over on Reddit with the rhythm I have going on currently, then I'd have to make a new subreddit for this Fan Adventure, and limit posts about it here to major updates on the series (or small bits of promotion if there aren't enough people showing up), or else things are going to have to start getting removed.

And since I didn't want to bring any more trouble for myself than I needed to, I decided to follow their advice. So the series is going to start updating over on r/WhaleBreak !

I'll still pop up on this sub from time to time for covers and other fanworks (especially if it's unrelated to Whale Break, like the "My Boy" doodle and such). But just know that the main project I'm working on atm is going to have to go somewhere else from now on.

I hope you guys understand. 'Cause I do.

I hope to see you there! :D

Whale Break {19}: listen to a funny little band called tally hall and then read homestuck

https://i.redd.it/cbvupgbsqgeh1.gif

Huh? "Tally Hall"? You are fairly certain you have never heard of this band in your entire life, and you have a decently good memory (in spite of all the revivals that have happened)! And even if you did know it, you don't have anything on hand that could help you listen to it.

Nor do you seem have that much more of a solid idea of what "homestuck" is, nor the means to read it.

"Oh, right! This book!", you think to yourself. You remember reading this back in High School English class. From what you still know, it's a very long and dense read, and a bit unfocused (as medieval literature tends to be), but certainly one of the more compelling of the Viking Sagas.

Yeah, this might just help keep you entertained for the few hours left in the cooldown until Duke spawns back to life in his jail cell.

Whale Break {18}: use the key on the door!

Hey! No need to shout! Besides, you can't do that because there is no- wait! Nevermind! There is suddenly a keyhole! Just as you were thinking about there needing to be one...

Outside there is a prison guard, whose presence thus urges you to start to carefully time and strategize you and your cellmate's escape.
