many people say that smart people focus on the point of the example and stupid people focus on the example itself, and i believe that both matter because you have to give an example thats fit for the topic your arguing about, like if the topic is complex then the example must have a complex meaning for the other person to understand the point of it, but if you give a simple example for a complicated situation/topic the person ofc will be confused because the example doesnt fit the topic and wouldnt make sense
