The crew of outpost Reigel 8-B/-x were beginning to worry they had done something silly.

Their soft, many-tentacled bodies were not up to the job of exploring the hot side of the asteroid. That's why they'd adopted the crew of the drifting shuttle that had come close to crashing into the base building.

Unfortunately, the human crew were all too keen to volunteer to map the "sunny side of the rock."

They returned after the first week with a sample of semi-sentient fungus and were now arguing amongst themselves about what to do with it.

Alfonzo wanted to cook it like his momma taught him.

Étienne wants to work out how to mate with it.

Billy, however, wants to get it drunk and fight it.

The field above the village grew the finest rye to be had across 5 shires

The farmer was proud of his amazing crop that had people coming from miles to buy the grain, it was THAT good.

The baker in the village bakery was well known for making a really great pumpernickel loaf, sometimes with dried fruit and always with the most amazing taste and texture.

So it was with some surprise that his first customer of the day was upset when he grabbed the small pumpernickel bum from the counter to give it a squeeze to test the freshness and it turned to mush in his hands.

"What's wrong with the loaves today?" He asked the assistant

She replied with a question, "You always come in here and squeeze the bums to test the freshness, don't you?"

"Of course," came the response "I like to be sure of the quality"

"Well," she explained "today was different"

"How so?"

"Today, you kneeded a poo"

Sorry.

Cardboard Engineering

Good day crafters.

Part of my job role is to help produce cardboard models for taking away and making at home for our customers and contacts. This is not a money making or charging part of the business at all, it's more of a sideline/hobby that we do for a bit of fun and a stress breaker.

Anyway. What we make are flat A3 sheets that you cut out and glue together to create a 3D model. I think these are known as nets.

My actual question is, if you are making a 3D model of a bus from A3 card, what's the best weight to be using? I have some 160gsm in stock, but wonder if it may be better to up the weight to 200gsm?

I only have limited knowledge of card shape making so I apologise if this is a silly question.

I have created a short extract from a wider novel, this is supposed to stand alone as a short story. [fantasy, 2650words]

I'd love to hear what people think of this story. It's been living in my head for years, and only recently reached the point where I felt I could finally get it onto the page and share it with other people.

Constructive critique is very welcome, whether that's pacing, prose, dialogue, worldbuilding, characterisation, or word choice. If something isn't working, I'd genuinely like to know. The only thing I'd ask is that criticism be aimed at helping the story improve rather than simply tearing it down. It's taken a long time to get to the point where I felt comfortable posting this.

The story sits within a much larger mythos that's been evolving in my head for a long time. It follows one thread of a setting connected by a mysterious traveller who moves across different ages and timescales, occasionally crossing paths with one of the world's small gods. You don't need to know any of that to follow this story, but if it leaves you wondering whether there's a bigger picture, there absolutely is.

Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read and comment. I genuinely appreciate every thoughtful piece of feedback.
