I turned my workout and nutrition tracking into a survival game HUD

Hey everyone,

This is my first time posting in this sub, and I wanted to share a personal project exploring how survival game mechanics can make daily fitness and diet tracking less of a chore.

The motivation came directly from my own experience. A while back, I was working hard to cut weight and work out while strictly watching what I ate. While the results were solid, having to constantly calculate calories and track calorie deficits every day felt really tedious. During a workout, I had a sudden thought: what if managing daily physical condition and nutrition felt like managing character vitals in a survival RPG? Would turning real-life maintenance into a survival loop make it more engaging and easier to stick with? So I decided to experiment with my own smartwatch and build this watch face.

I designed two core gamified panels for the system:

  • Nutrition Tracking Mode: Paired with a lightweight logging tool on the watch to record the four basic nutrients (carbs, protein, fat, and hydration). Instead of just dry numbers, the watch face displays real-time intake versus dynamic burn and calculates a live avatar "HP" at the center, complete with status buffs and debuffs like dehydration, digestion, and metabolic burn.
  • Stamina Tracking Mode: Synthesizes raw underlying sensor data (activity load, Body Battery, sleep, stress) into an intuitive "Stamina" pool. This translates abstract physiological figures into a visual energy bar, making daily recovery and fatigue more engaging to monitor.

I put a lot of heart into building this, and I would really appreciate any feedback, thoughts, or critique from the community so I can learn from your perspectives and keep improving it!

[Watch Face] Player One Carbon: Turn your Garmin metrics & nutrition tracking into an RPG survival HUD

Hey everyone! This is my first time posting in this community, so please bear with me! After a period of testing and refining, the latest release of my watch face Player One Carbon and companion tool CarbonLoader is officially live!

I had two main motivations for building this. First, during workouts at the gym, I wanted a clear, immediate way to monitor real-time intake versus energy expenditure directly on my wrist. Second, as a survival game fan, I felt that translating daily physiological metrics, caloric balance, and nutrition into an RPG survival interface would make tracking far more engaging and help build sustainable nutrition and lifestyle habits.

Overview:

Page 1: Daily Dashboard

The center features the time and a battery ring, along with 4 customizable data slots supporting native metrics (Body Battery, heart rate, steps, VO2 Max, and more). It supports custom color themes and an optional dynamic day and night weather icon mode in settings.

Page 2: RPG Survival System

Long-press the screen to switch to the survival panel, featuring 3 switchable modes:

  • Real-time Stamina Tracking: Synthesizes Body Battery, stress, sleep quality, SpO2, and activity load to estimate real-time stamina. Caffeine intake generates an active stamina shield (*Tip: The algorithm dynamically simulates caffeine metabolic decay over time, making it easy to gauge whether your intake is too high or consumed too late in the day), alongside status icons for deep charging, fat burning, high-stress depletion, and hypoxia warnings.
  • Carbon Bio-Status: Simulates avatar HP along with carb, protein, fat, and hydration reserves, displaying live status indicators for dehydration, digestion, hunger, metabolic burn, and alcohol intake.
  • Body Evolution Metrics: Dynamically calculates daily calorie targets directly from your active burn based on your selected fitness goal (Cut, Maintain, or Bulk).

Companion App (CarbonLoader)

A lightweight logging app featuring food presets, a rapid-entry nutrient matrix, and scheduled supply airdrop alerts that sync directly to the watch face in real time.

If you'd like to give it a try, here are the links:

Curious about how the watch face and app work? You can check out the user manual on the Garmin forums.

[Update] Player One Carbon: Introducing Real-time Stamina Tracking & Dynamic Weather Icons

After extensive development and testing, Player One Carbon V1.1.0 is officially live with brand-new features!

Here are the key updates in this release:

  • Real-time Stamina Tracking Mode:

Page 2 now supports switching to a dedicated Stamina Tracking panel. The algorithm synthesizes multi-dimensional metrics including Body Battery, stress, sleep quality, SpO2, and activity load to dynamically estimate your real-time stamina and shield status. The interface displays live status indicators for deep charging, fat burning, high-stress depletion, and hypoxia warnings.

  • Caffeine Mechanic Overhaul:

Replaced the previous caffeine golden HP mechanic and migrated caffeine intake to function as an active shield within the stamina mode.

  • Dynamic Weather Icons:

Enabling "Dynamic Weather Icons" in settings replaces the standard "Outdoor Temperature" icon with real-time weather condition graphics. The icons adapt to Garmin weather data and automatically switch between day and night variants based on local sunrise and sunset times.

  • Underlying Performance & Algorithm Optimization:

Refactored background execution logic so all modes run concurrently in the background without pausing or losing calculated states when switching. Streamlined processing to reduce CPU overhead and improve battery efficiency.

[New Watch Face] I turned my Garmin data into an RPG survival status screen

After a lot of testing and tweaking, my new watch face Player One Carbon is officially live!

Two main motivations drove this project. As a fan of survival games, I always thought converting smartwatch metrics into status bars and HP meters would be fun. During my workouts, I also had a lightbulb moment: having a real-time visual of my actual calorie intake versus burn right on my wrist would make nutrition tracking far more intuitive, turning logging into something as engaging as collecting in-game supplies and making it easier to stick with.

The overall design centers around a gaming interface. (To be honest, I didn't overthink the aesthetic while building it, but quite a few people told me it gives off an '80s retro vibe. Does it actually look retro to you?)

Page 1 focuses on core daily metrics. It features four customizable data slots with adjustable UI colors, allowing you to set up your preferred stats.

Page 2 brings out the RPG survival interface. Paired with the companion watch app CarbonLoader (used for logging intake), it lets you intuitively monitor your intake, calorie burn, and HP bar in real time. It also dynamically calculates and displays recommended calorie targets based on your baseline stats and active calories, offering modes for weight maintenance, muscle gain, and fat loss. (Whenever I see my intake exceeding the target, I go down for a quick run to compensate. Just kidding!)

If you'd like to give it a try, here are the links:

Curious about how the watch face and app work? You can check out the user manual on the Garmin forums.

Feel free to leave any questions, ideas, or feedback in the comments. I would love to hear your thoughts and chat with everyone!

[Watch Face + App] Player One Carbon — Real-Time Metabolic Prediction & Survival RPG System

Hey everyone! A while back I shared a quick look at my concept for a survival-RPG-inspired Garmin watch face. The complete system, including both the watch face and its companion app CarbonLoader, is now officially live!

Page 1 remains completely free. It features a high-visibility battery telemetry ring, full UI color customization, and 4 customizable slots supporting over 30 native Garmin metrics.

Page 2 unlocks the metabolic prediction engine. Processing baseline metrics like heart rate and stress telemetry, the algorithm simulates your virtual survival stats, including HP alongside the ongoing depletion of carbs, protein, fat, and water. Based on your current balance, the watch face displays dynamic status buffs and debuffs for various RPG survival states, such as alcohol intake, active digestion, dehydration, keto intolerance, and rabbit starvation. You can also toggle this screen to view real-time intake recommendations tailored to cutting, bulking, or maintaining.

The companion app, CarbonLoader, is built for versatile logging and data visualization. You can log standard preset meals, or use the 9-category "Diet Matrix" (soups, fried food, etc.) to estimate nutrients straight from food weight. For exact accuracy, the "Ing. Synth" option lets you enter precise nutritional values directly. The app includes dedicated tracking for coffee and alcohol, scheduled "airdrop" prompts for routine logging, and interactive Analytics Charts that track your intake across daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly timeframes with target baselines for bulk, cut, and maintain modes calculated from basic watch data.

The full version is live today on the Connect IQ Store! If you have any thoughts or questions about the system, feel free to drop them in the comments below!

[Update] Player One Carbon — Device Compatibility Expansion & Survival Mechanism Balance Adjustments

Thanks to everyone for the feedback in the last post! The latest version has now been updated to V0.1.4. This iteration significantly expands device compatibility and introduces deep optimizations to the underlying balance algorithms of the survival system.

Device Compatibility Greatly Expanded

The new version officially supports the full Epix series and Fenix 7 series, with broad coverage across mainstream running watches such as Forerunner 965/265/165, the Venu 2 & 3 series, and Vivoactive 5. Additionally, the Approach golf series, Descent diving series, and MARQ luxury series have also been adapted simultaneously.

Page 1 Updates

Fixed and optimized some underlying code logic errors to improve the watch face's stability. In terms of visual interaction, a battery detail has been added: now when the watch is connected to the charger, the battery ring on the screen will turn gold.

Page 2 Updates

The core RPG survival system has received more reasonable numerical fine-tuning. The system optimized the calorie target calculation and nutritional status detection when switching modes. Meanwhile, I rebalanced the impact of ambient temperature on water depletion and raised the activation threshold for passive fat-burn. Furthermore, the system optimized the balance between the minimum health recovery nutrition threshold and the recovery multiplier, and corrected the icon display under corresponding nutrition modes.

Reiteration of the Payment Mechanism

To help those who are seeing this post for the first time, here is a brief explanation. The first page of the watch face is permanently free and does not affect daily wear as a regular watch face. The hardcore survival game features on the second page serve as a premium unlock option, and the new version still provides a 24-hour free trial period. Once the official version is uploaded, existing users can update seamlessly and automatically.

Currently, Page 1 is officially open, and Page 2 is still in internal testing.

Welcome to download and experience it! If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to leave a comment under this post anytime.
