If you are held on a $100,000 bond, you pay the Bondsman $10,000 and you never get that money back? Even if found innocent?

I don't know much about the judicial system in my state... and country really. I've never had a run in with the law, but I've been watching some judge's youtube channel and I can't believe this if it is true. That's insane. $10k or more can break some people and possibly kill their credit.

How many Good Samaritans could there have been?

We've all seen the "oh I was just trying to help" defense. It's right up there with "I wasn't going to do anything." But, I'm having one of those moments and thinking "humanity can't be that bad, can it?"

How many potential "predators" do you think have gone into a chat room, realized the decoy was a minor, and either said "I'm out," or "you really need to get off the internet."

I mean lately the sting is about prostitutes, so it makes the guys somewhat guilty from the start. But are there any that have some semblance of saying "I draw the line at children?"

[IT Operations and Consulting] [Chicago] - $251,000

The long haul. I've seen a few posts from 20-somethings who have had explosive career growth. Here's a long tail career progression from a 47 year old. A few bursts when I've changed jobs, and I'm hoping to end my career in consulting over the next (hopefully) 10 years when I retire in my mid 50s.

I don't know where to go from here

I've f'ed up.

In trying to build a retirement portfolio, I wanted to include rental properties. My wife and I have moved a few times over the past 8 years, first for my career, then for hers. Finally, I wanted to move us to Chicago, where we bought a 4 unit multi-family last year, and hang onto our other properties as rentals. Those are going pretty well, breaking even for the most part.

This Chicago property, but more importantly, one of the inherited tenants, is making our lives miserable. Missing rent, a pending eviction as a result, and we're trying to escape a crappy basement living situation by moving between various Marriotts. Hotels are killing us, financially. But we consider our safety in the wake of an unhinged tenant, who is now living for free.

I feel like I'm losing my amazing wife, and don't know how to dig out of this situation.

No real advice needed. Just wanted to vent. Thank you for listening.

Frequent Flyer Debrief

Yesterday, I flew from Morgantown to Chicago. As the inbound flight was coming in from Chicago, I was watching FR24, and saw the flight path zip right by the airport, like a DoorDash driver that misses your house on a one way street. A few seconds later, the message "Diverting to Pittsburgh" appears on screen.

My thoughts:

Weather?

Medical?

Maintenance?

The Gate Agent stepped out for an announcement. Turns out, both of MGW's fuel trucks were down. Meaning, the flight could land, but couldn't leave. So, the inbound diverted to Pittsburgh, took on fuel, flew into Morgantown to drop off passengers and pick us up, and get us back to Chicago.

Thinking through this, the SkyWest pilots (I should say, the amazing SkyWest pilots) were told about 5 minutes before landing that they couldn't get fuel if they landed. They did some calculations, and determined in a matter of 60 seconds while in flight:

- Their diversion airport, PIT, could accommodate them

- They could take on enough fuel for both a flight to MGW and back to ORD

- They could still be below max landing weight at MGW

- They could safely accommodate every single passenger from both flights

SkyWest crews, you all are awesome, as are all airline crews. See ya again on Sunday!

Delayed and Chicago Bound Frequent Flyer

Heading home to Chicago from Greenville tonight, with a stubborn weather band right in the flight path. Friends, the only way to Chicago is over or around this dang thing. To go around is surely cost prohibitive, and to go over may be impossible if these storm clouds are too high.

Flight crews watch these things obsessively to keep us safe. As annoying as delays can be, I will be the first to assure you that you are in the most capable hands.

(Landlord) Am I going too far?

Landlord here. I'll get some hate I'm sure just because of that. But I want to share the story from this side.

First, I am not in the eviction business. I am in the 'giving hard working Chicagoans a decent place to live' business. I bought a four unit multi family back in November, and I occupy the basement unit. The basement isn't legal, but, as the owner, I'm not in a rush to tell on myself.

My tenants have been paying rent to the prior landlord since 2021 according to their leases. My intention was never to raise the rent when I acquired the property, nor to give any end of lease notices. Two of my tenants are great, paying on time, personable, generally awesome people. One has consistently been late. Also personable, but never really acknowledged that rent was erratic. After about the third late month, in March, I decided it was time to give a 120 day. I don't believe a 5 day benefits anyone. It's expensive, and it puts undue pressure on good people in an already unbearable situation.

They have not taken this well. Rent has not come since, and my fear is that, at the end of July, they won't leave.

My plan is to offer somewhat of a cash for keys, basically not going after them for rent, as long as they agree to leave. If, however, they are here on August 1st, the plan is to start eviction proceedings, go after all back rent, legal fees, and wear and tear.

As tenants, would you consider this to be too harsh? I hate being in this position. What is acceptable and fair?

I want to take a moment to acknowledge some of the most professional crews that have gotten me home safely on so many occasions. When I was living in Miami before COVID, I did the FLL to LBE flight almost weekly. Thank you for flying me.

We run a more traditional B&B, with cooked to order breakfast, and have been on Airbnb for about 5 years now. In addition, guests can book directly with us, or through Expedia or booking.com. This was a direct booking.

We got 1-starred on Google. The complaints: low on toilet paper, and low on shampoo. Both easily remedied if they'd replied to our welcome text, inviting them to reach out of they needed anything.

The bigger dilemma: they walked into our private kitchen and laundry area, clearly marked "Staff Only," took a picture, and posted it.

To be fair, it was not us at our best, and I've addressed this with the staff. However, how has the group dealt with guests that help themselves to private spaces in a host's home? To me, this is clearly a trespassing situation, made evident in the photo review. My wife (and co-owner) wants to let it go. Does it rise to that level? Or am I overreacting?

(Edit: couple typos)
