Pinhole photography under Scanning Electron Microscope

Hi everyone! I'm Eric. I work in microscopy, but photography has always been my biggest passion—especially pinhole photography and other historical processes.

If you're curious about any of the chemistry, optics, electron microscopy, or behind-the-scenes details, I'd be happy to answer your questions.

Tintype under Scanning Electron Microscope

Have you ever seen a Nike Swoosh on a tintype under a scanning electron microscope?

I'd be happy to answer any questions about analog photography, wet plate collodion, or electron microscopy.

Extremely disappointed with PRX 100 Powermatic 80

I bought a new watch and wore it for two and a half years. Carefully, no drops, no water. Yesterday, it just died. When I turn the crown, the winding rotor rotates with it. The hands don't move at all.

I still think a movement of this quality shouldn't break after two years. Okay, it's not a Rolex, but it's a reliable Swiss watch, right? I know about the "plastic" parts in the mechanism, but that doesn't seem to be the reason

Overall, it's sad.

Before this, I wore (and will continue to wear) my quartz PR 100. It's indestructible; I've been swimming, falling, and mountain biking. Even the crown wore off on one side against my skin. It still works perfectly; just change the battery and that's it.

1, 2, 3, 4 - CD-4
5, 6, 7 - SQ

Hey guys,

First of all, thanks a lot for the amazing support last time — you really made my day 🙂

I bought two records on eBay — one with CD-4 encoding and one with SQ. I ended up breaking them, coating them with platinum, and putting them under my electron microscope. The CD-4 is beautiful — the wavelength of those ultrasonic grooves is around 15 microns, and it gets much smaller closer to the center. Honestly, it feels like a one-time format.

I’m curious — is there anyone here who actually has a decoder? Were you able to play a record more than a couple of times? It seems like the wear on those ridges happens almost instantly.

Would love to hear any real-world experiences — did it actually sound good, and if so, how?

Have a great day, and happy vinyl to everyone.
