Soviet futurism (optimistic)
Hey all, I’m looking for any books that capture the optimistic feel of the Soviet futurism - not really into dystopian genera.
Any recommendations? Thanks!

I’ve been reading about sustainable diets in Ireland and came across two recent papers assessing contemporary Irish dietary patterns from environmental and One Health perspectives.
They made me wonder whether there is scope for an evidence-based “New Irish” Diet (Aiste Bia Nua-Éireann), somewhat analogous to the New Nordic Diet or Mediterranean diet.
Both of those dietary models are strongly connected to their regional food systems and cultures. The Mediterranean diet, for example, typically emphasises vegetables, fruit, legumes, wholegrains, nuts, olive oil and seafood, with more moderate amounts of dairy and meat. The New Nordic Diet similarly builds around foods suited to Nordic climates, production systems and culinary traditions.
Rather than simply trying to copy either model, could Ireland develop its own equivalent based on nutritional adequacy, environmental sustainability, local food production and cultural acceptability?
An Aiste Bia Nua-Éireann could potentially emphasise things like:
・oats and other wholegrains
・potatoes
・root vegetables and brassicas
・peas, beans and other pulses
・apples and berries
・seafood from around Ireland
・seaweed
・dairy and eggs
・Irish-produced meat, but potentially in more moderate quantities
・soups and stews
・fermented foods
・seasonal and locally produced foods
I’d personally see meat as remaining part of the dietary pattern, ideally Irish-produced, rather than assuming that sustainability requires its complete removal. The interesting question would be how to balance nutritional value, environmental impacts, agricultural suitability and consumer acceptance.
From a food science perspective, do you think there is merit in developing region-specific sustainable dietary models like this rather than simply encouraging countries with very different food systems to adopt Mediterranean or Nordic-style diets?
And what evidence would you want to see before something like a “New Irish Diet” could be considered scientifically robust?
The two papers that prompted the idea:

I’ve been reading about sustainable diets in Ireland, and it made me wonder if Ireland could develop a more recognisable modern food identity of its own.
The idea would be a “New Irish” Diet (Aiste Bia Nua-Éireann)** **not simply traditional Irish food, but a modern way of eating built around Irish foods, culture, seasonality and sustainability.
In the same way that the Mediterranean** **diet is strongly associated with the foods and food culture of that region, and the New Nordic Diet created a modern Nordic approach to eating, could Ireland develop something similar of its own?
An Aiste Bia Nua-Éireann could potentially emphasise things like:
・oats and other wholegrains
・potatoes
・root vegetables and brassicas
・peas, beans and other pulses
・apples and berries
・seafood from around Ireland
・seaweed
・dairy and eggs
・Irish-produced meat, but potentially in more moderate quantities
・soups and stews
・fermented foods
・seasonal and locally produced foods
Personally, I’d still want meat to have a place in it, ideally Irish-produced meat. I don’t think a sustainable Irish diet necessarily has to mean removing meat entirely; it could be more about balance, portions, quality, and making better use of foods that Ireland is genuinely good at producing.
I’m also curious whether this could help give Irish food a clearer identity internationally, distinct from British food while still acknowledging the obvious overlap between the two?
Would something like this appeal to you? And what would make it feel genuinely Irish rather than just a new label for foods we already eat?

I was listening to Hits Different and Fortnight back to back (as one does lol) and noticed something I hadn’t really thought about before.
At the end of Hits Different:
I heard your key turn in the door down the hallway
Is that your key in the door?
Is it okay? Is it you?
Or have they come to take me away?
To take me away
Then TTPD opens with Fortnight:
I was supposed to be sent away
But they forgot to come and get me
It almost feels like Fortnight picks up exactly where Hits Different leaves off. In Hits Different, she’s wondering whether “they” have finally come to take her away, and then in Fortnight she basically says: they were supposed to, but they never came.
Obviously Hits Different isn’t literally the final track on every edition of Midnights, but narratively it feels like such a perfect transition into TTPD.
Which made me wonder whether there’s a similar transition from TTPD into The Life of a Showgirl.
The Anthology ends with The Manuscript, where she finally separates herself from the story and essentially lets it go. Then The Life of a Showgirl begins with The Fate of Ophelia and another story about a woman who could have been consumed/destroyed by love, except this time she escapes that fate.
So you almost get:
Hits Different: They’re coming to take me away.
↓
Fortnight: They were supposed to take me away, but they forgot.
↓
TTPD: living through/processing the breakdown.
↓
The Manuscript: the story doesn’t belong to me anymore.
↓
The Fate of Ophelia: I didn’t end up becoming the tragic woman that story said I would.
I don’t necessarily think every one of these connections was planned years in advance, but I really like the idea that the final songs of one era can function almost like a doorway into the next one.
Do you think The Manuscript → The Fate of Ophelia is the TTPD → Showgirl equivalent of Hits Different → Fortnight? Or is there another pair of songs you think makes the transition better?
Hi everyone! I absolutely love The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and would really like to have a digital copy of the complete series rather than relying on a Prime subscription indefinitely.
Ideally, I’m looking for something I can purchase once (or download) and keep, rather than needing an ongoing streaming subscription. I’ve looked around, but it doesn’t seem like Amazon ever made the full series widely available for digital purchase.
Has anyone found a good option for owning the series digitally, or know whether it was ever released for purchase anywhere? I’m also curious what other Maisel fans have done to keep access to the show long-term.
Thanks!
