Space Combat Holding Me Back

I really enjoy how in-depth the Earth and space economy elements of the game are. It's been a bit of a learning curve, but I think I'm getting the hang of it, bit by bit.

However I'm just completely lost when it comes to space combat. I can comfortably beat human fleets, but I have no chance against the aliens. I've imported my ship designs from my save, and tried a few matches in Skirmish, but I can't even destroy one ayy ship.

Working on advice here, I tried a line of coilgun battlecruisers moving slowly with a screen of PD/coil monitors moving fast in front of them, and some escorts, but the aliens just seem to outflank me, outrange my and PD down my coilgun shots. I've modelled their fleet after one of the surveillance fleets in-game.

Worse, I cannot do any advanced maneuvers to counter flankers beyond 'intercept course', because I find the combat interface utterly unusable, and my ships don't have enough combat acceleration anyway.

It just feels hopeless. I want to progress the story and earth, but the space combat is a big blocker.

If the Earth game is viewed as pointless after you get to space and your nations are only 'MC farms', then what's the point of having all the complex mechanics for earth at all? Is it just a trap to lure in map painter sandbox builders like me and then cruelly pull the rug away by locking progression behind this overwhelming space combat mechanic?

Context:

  • It's the late 2030s and aliens are fielding surveillance fleets with 500+ fleet strength
  • I have up to lancers and battleships as ship types
  • I have ion PDs and coilguns, as well as Zeus missiles and am working on green lasers
  • I am on the cusp of fusion, but it's so slow. So I only have diana superheavies and grid drives

UPDATE: Situation in 2036

Spoilers: 2036, Early Alien Lore

So last week I posted my 2036 Resistance campaign, which I thought was doomed.

I got some good advice from many people (I apologise for not responding to everyone, there were a lot of comments), and decided to roll back the clock five years to an earlier save, instead of starting from scratch (I'm already 46 hours in, phew).

Thank you to everyone who gave their two cents, I did appreciate it a lot.

I think my situation in this alt-2036 is much better, but I still have some problems:

Earth

  • Instead of screwing around in the Balkans, I took Russia, Canada and South Korea
  • I'm now using most of my Control Points, though my cap isn't much higher
  • I have a spy in the Servants, who has revealed a lot of sites/info
  • My councillors have a lot more administration, and I picked up Covert Ops for a sixth
  • I've sabotaged the Servants' research enough that the Alien Nation hasn't yet appeared
  • Boost priority has been shut off in favour of Mission Control, which I am using at capacity
  • I have a bunch of Exofighters now
  • I don't have so much spare cash or boost lying around doing nothing

Space

  • My space economy is broadly a lot stronger, between double and triple what it was.
  • I used marines to conquer a bunch of habs on Mars. I'd take more, but lack the MC (and without fusion piles, I can't afford ops centres there)
  • I have orbitals building on Mercury, with campuses/ops centres/nanofactories
  • I did try to build more asteroid mines than I had, but faced some issues (see below)

Problems

Space Combat

  • I've gotten to the point where I can't expand more without fighting in space - Alien hate is high, MC is about at cap, and they have a lot of surveillance ships in LEO
  • However, the aliens also have large (600-1000+) fleets in orbit.
  • I've tried Skirmish mode, I cannot get my head around the space combat, even when I outnumber the enemy. The maneuvering is a bit clunky.
  • Moreover, I get the impression my ship designs / tech choices are bad (see pics for my main model)
  • I've heard that lasers for PD and then missiles/coilguns for offense are the play, but haven't got green lasers yet

Economy

  • My space economy is hampered by a lack of MC (else I'd take all of Mars with marines) and no fusion generators, which would make asteroid mining more viable

Terrestrial Military

  • I have 3 pips in every control point pumped into Military, something like 75-85% boost to Military IPs from orgs, and a decent tech boost, and yet my miltech struggles to get past 5, when Japan and the USA are well past that. Am I doing something wrong?

Thought people who contributed to the previous post would appreciate an update. I'm open to any feedback advice as before!

How Cooked Am I?

It's currently 2036 as the Resistance, my first serious run.

I'm beginning to worry this run is already cooked because the Alien Administration have India, whilst the Servants have Russia, and a selection of other 4/3 control point countries.

  • I have been putting a lot of time into unifying Europe, and have gotten most of it in one nation.
  • I have some space economy, with mines / bases on Mars and some inner-belt asteroids.
  • I have a fleet at about 300 attack power**,** but I can't get individual ships past 50 each.
  • I've almost got Fusion drives. Maybe a couple years away.
  • My councilors are decent, three have one max stat each. Like 19 orgs total?
  • My miltech stubbornly stays around 4.6, even with max investment points in Military, though with bonuses from LEO stations and councilors I can get armies to about 5.5 attack power.
  • However, I haven't really taken any aggressive action against the aliens yet, besides raiding one of their facilities.
  • The Alien Administration is being really aggressive, gobbling up weaker countries in Africa and South America, so I'm not sure what to do here.
  • I struggle enough to forward-plan and strategise, but the UI makes it a lot harder to compare options/visualise things.

Is my economy / tech strong enough for 2036, or am I already cooked?

Would appreciate experienced players thoughts!

EDIT:
Thank you for all of your comments. There is some good advice in there.
It does however seem like this run is unsalvageable. I wasn't aggressive enough with the aliens, I didn't build enough mines (probably because the micro they would entail didn't appeal to me) and I didn't use enough of my control points. Though I was running out of them for most of the game.

Plus I just don't know how to plan research and shipbuilding because the UI is so dense and unwiedly for those features.

Many Gradient Maps, One Multiply Layer

Looking for help with using (many many) gradient maps and a multiply layer to render!

I currently render with the folllowing set up:

  1. Linework
  2. Gradient Maps (dozens, cut out to individual elements)
  3. Opaque Multiply Layer (for rendering, other render layers are here too)
  4. Base Values (greyscale, the lightest value each element can be)
  5. Background

This takes a lot of time cutting out the gradient maps to the shapes of the individual elements of a piece, which I already do for the base values basically.

I was wondering if I could cut out time by instead using this:

  1. Linework
  2. Opaque Multiply Layer
  3. Element Groups (e.g. skin, metal, wood, cloth colour 1, etc.)
    1. Gradient Map
    2. Base Value
  4. Backer (one value, to ensure there aren't holes)
  5. Background

However, I'm not sure how to set up the layers so that the shading / Multiply layer adopts the colours of the individual gradient maps.

Am I barking completely up the wrong tree? Is there a better way to do this?

I'd be grateful for any advice people can offer!

Pandora Behaviour Engine - Preload Failed

I am trying to install Pandora Behaviour Engine, but am getting an 'Preload failed' error.

Background

I have followed several guides, and thought I had installed it properly. I am using MO2.

I have manually set the game location to the Steam path in the Edit Executable area. This is not in Program Files, it is on a separate SSD in D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition.

I am not using, and have never installed Nemesis or FNIS.

As suggested by guides, I have clicked 'Create files in mod instead of overwrite' and made an empty mod called 'Pandora Output' for any outputs.

Details

When I run the executable and click the play button, I get this error:

Engine launched with configuration: Skyrim SE/AE. Do not exit before the launch is finished.
Waiting for preload to finish...
Error: Preload failed. See logs for details.

The error log returns this:

Has anyone dealt with this before and know a fix?
Any support you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think my modlist is relevant for this query, but I can provide it if needed.

Thank you for your time.
