Family who drowned off Sussex beach were a Palestinian refugee, his wife and daughter

First day of the summer holidays and I've got my son's friend's mums texting me asking if he's free for a "playdate".
When I was 13 I just used to ride round to my friend's house on my bike or phone them myself to arrange to go out (surely this is even easier now they've all got mobiles?). I would have been mortified to have my mum contacting my friend's mums to sort out my social life.
Is this a normal thing? If so, when does it end? Are parents still arranging "playdates" for their university age kids?
This isn't 'An Officer and A Gentleman', there is another film that I watched, probably from the 80s or 90s, where the score sounded like the chorus from 'Love Lift Us.....'. It played several times throughout the film.
