Soft Machines

Soft Machines

Ivan Morison and Heather Peak's project Soft Machines has been working on me over the time it's been up. My first reaction wasn't completely positive, I felt like they were kind of Telly Tubbies, and then when I read the blurb about them it just seemed tiresome and that might really have said more about my mood than any objective or even fully subjective response, just a reaction - nope.

I'm glad they're where they are because now I've seen them several times from different angles and in different weather. Taking the dog onto the Lawns in the morning they've become like friends who say 'Yoo hoo!' and now I feel like I don't want them taken down. I know that the materials are temporary and if they weren't taken down they'd wear away, but we already have the West Pier, and are somewhat habituated to watching a wearing away.

They're still a bit Telly Tubby, but in a way that I have become fond of.

Are there any laptop-friendly cafes with an outdoor patio area?

I'm probably asking for the impossible but I'll probably have to work this weekend. As the weather is meant to be glorious, the idea of being stuck at home or in the library is too grim to fathom. So I'm looking for a hidden gem - any cafes / pubs / venues with reliable WiFi and an outdoor space? I'm guessing somewhere a bit more quiet as all the central cafes will be really busy with day-trippers coming down to the beach. Also, and I know this probably takes me out of the running... anywhere I could keep my laptop plugged in? (asking as I've seen outdoor plugs in pub beer gardens before). Thank you!

Which is your least favorite part of Brighton?

Could be an area or just a road, the more niche the better.

I’ll go first. controversial but Preston park feels odd to me for some reason.

What's your experience of the vehicle recharging network in Brighton?

It looks like vast areas of the more densely populated regions are very poorly served

I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

Any other festival like The Great Escape?

Hello,

I went to The Great Escape for the first time this year.
I really enjoyed how all the gigs were small-scale and spread across so many independent venues in the heart of the city.
Are there any other festivals like this in the UK or elsewhere in Europe?

To the dude with the brindle french bulldog...

...please come by the private residential car park near Bedford Square and pick up your dog's shit. I will even provide a plastic bag for you!

I know exactly what you look like and I've seen you around before, so I'll be sure to say hello when I next see you.

Thanks!

Keys and QR codes

There's a whole load of red ribbons with keys and QR codes attached along the underpass from the train station. I'm really curious but feel like scanning the QR codes too risk. What do you think? Marketing? Social action related? Aliens???

Not Grace

There’s filming going on on Palmeira Square. I assumed it was Grace (it’s nearly always Grace) but unless it’s an unexpected time travel episode it’s not. Also the fire truck says London Fire Brigade. So it looks like Palmeira is playing London. The fire truck doesn’t look contemporaneous to the car, but I assume my casual opinion is not the same as whatever research they’ve done. When I was walking the dog this morning she stopped for a poo by the car and when I went to pick it up (the poo not the car) I noticed the car door was open a crack.

Brighton is for Lovers!

I made these concept designs for a hoodie and t-shirt to show my love for Brighton! They're a spin on the famous 'Virginia is For Lovers' ad campaign and I made my own version after thinking a lot about the far right nonsense that is happening at the moment. The response from the Brighton community has been so powerful, and it makes me proud to live here. These are a reminder that Brighton is a place for lovers, not haters! Ps, I'm not selling these, I just wanted to share them with Brighton's Reddit community! I may print some in the near future and donate the money to charity if people like them! You can find me on Instagram: samueljarchive for updates :)

Southern water dumping sewage in the Sea this morning in Brighton and Hove

So it looks like Southern Water has dumped sewage in the Sea again today. What I'm struggling to wrap my head around is how they can justify it, it barely rained in Brighton and Hove today in the early morning, at .4" of rainfall in total with a maximum of .1" each hour between 6-8. This amount of rainfall falls into the category of light rain/drizzle. In view of this, how can Southern Water justify dumping sewage in the sea, are they claiming that their infrastructure can't handle a couple of hours of light rainfall? From my experience of living in B&H, it seems like the sewage overflow is activated basically any time it rains, is this normal for B&H? Looking for some answers here as last time I checked, half my water bill was "wastewater" related, but it seems like I'm just paying for polluting the sea every time it rains a little. https://datahq.sas.org.uk/sewage-data-hq/is-it-safe-to-swim/

£100 Bounty For Anyone Who Recovers My Bike or Provides Info Which Leads To Its Recovery

https://www.bikeregister.com/stolen.../cube-nuride-e3472f96

£100 Bounty for anyone who can recover my stolen bike, or I’ll split that evenly between anyone with vital information that leads to the recovery of it.

It was stolen on the 29th of April from the car park of Varndean School, around 18:00.

Please spread this post like wildfire as I really need this back if possible (unlikely I know but I'm still going to do everything I can).

Thank you
