A Little Sven Humor

While watching Destroy All Monsters, I realized this wasn't the only film with beautiful Kilaak women in cool outfits. The office fashionistas went *kilaak kilaak kilaak* across the marble floors in the Devil Wears Prada.

Svengoolie -47 Years Strong

47 years is a long time to be host of any program, let alone one which presents horror and sci-fi films. It's no surprise that Rich Koz has received multiple awards because of what he adds to the viewing of films. That is the key to his longevity.

Simply put, Svengoolie increases the entertainment value of any film because he makes each program memorable and fun.

Sven showcases classic films in prime time, providing not just the films, but key tidbits about directors, actors and other trivia to enhance our appreciation. He uniquely adds humor to horror with corny Dad jokes and "Sven-Surround" to take the edge off serious or horrific moments. Along with his talented crew, he also does parodies of old tunes for each movie.

Most important, he creates a loyal multi-generational fandom by showing his appreciation of fan art, photos, comments, and letters. THAT is Svengoolie's enduring legacy. Along with rubber chickens, knock-on-the-door jokes, Kerwin, and "No Personal Checks." Saturday night Chicago has been and still is Svengoolie - 47 years strong.

A Simple Pleasure

Every evening I allow myself this one indulgence. One day I may learn the intricacies of design that the baristas demonstrate, but for now, this satisfies. My Mocca Cappuccino.

Vincent Price: Thoughts On An Icon

It's his birthday. I got to thinking about what he achieved. I admire Vincent Price not just for his craft, his body of work, but for what he pulled off as a man.

All of us struggle to balance what we love - what we want to spend our lives doing - with what we need to do as a means of work. Love and Work. Price loved art, Yale educated, loved stage acting. Droll sense of humor. His early acting in films like Dragonwyck, Laura etc showed his acting chops. But once he started in the horror genre - early William Castle films like The Tingler, The House on Haunted Hill, and of course the "Poe Cycle" Roger Corman films like Pit and the Pendulum, House of Usher, the delightful Tales of Terror with other greats like Peter Lorre and Basil Rathbone - and other films like Theater Of Blood - with Diana Rigg - he became an icon.

Not just because of the films, but because IMHO he brought exceptional skills to what could have been routine portrayls.

Work was play for Vincent Price. He could ham it up and we loved him for it. Who else could do a spoken rap sequence in the Michael Jackson horror Video "Thriller" - and be remembered for it?

It was not just his voice, his delivery, his tone, but what he brought to films, acting, the horror genre. Fun. He helped us laugh when we were scared. Transcend ourselves. Enjoy ourselves. Because he did. He made work, play. An amazing feat for anyone.
