Blueberry Fluorite over Quartz - Inner Mongolia, China

Saturated blue fluorite crystals have formed over quartz. The fluorite has interesting octahedral and cubeoctahedral crystals.

Time lapse work in progress

This is around 2.5 hours condensed into 30 seconds of he latest painting I’m working on. I’ve had no plan for where it’s going, just freehanding it bit by bit.

Aerosol for the background and acrylic paint on top of that.

“Essence” - Acrylic on Canvas

“Essence”

16x20”

Acrylic on canvas

*

I had the privilege of traveling to California last fall to attend a workshop taught by an incredible artist by the name of Blake Foster where I started this painting. The whole idea felt like it pieced itself together with almost no second guessing. It all felt instinctual, like I’d just automatically know once I finished one little section what was supposed to come next, despite me not planning any of it out. I’m so happy to now call it done 💚

Shattuckite

There was a small find in Kaokoveld Plateau, Namibia around 2021 where these amazing shattuckite crystals came out. This piece features large botryoidal structures made up of many small botryoids. The color and form remind me of blueberries. This was the top piece that I got. There was a light dusting of greenish mottramite in a couple of little spots too.

“Transponder” (acrylic and aerosol on canvas)

“Transponder”

18x24”

Started this almost a year ago and FINALLY finished it!

I only get an hour or two at night to make art and have the tendency to bounce around between different paintings, so my progress is relatively slow. The ideas are always brewing though, and for now I’m just building up my collection of originals and working towards eventually being able to invest in making prints and selling my work.

Anyways, thanks for looking! I’m happy I can now post this one and work on finishing the next piece, which should be done very soon!

Emerald

An absolute gem of a specimen! This is an emerald crystal from Jos Plateau, Nigeria. The crystal is very transparent and features a nice pinacoidal termination! Rare to see such fine crystallization

Twinned calcite

Calcite or ninja star?

A crazy formation of a double twinned calcite with phantoms in every crystal. Haven‘t seen another quite like this one

Adamite

Here is a detailed cluster of adamite crystals from the Ojuela Mine in Mexico. These crystals fluoresce bright green due to trace impurities of uranyl ions (UO2 2+)

Iridescent Turgite

From the famed Graves Mountain in Georgia comes this iridescent turgite (hematite/goethite mixture). This piece has vibrant colors that really pop!

Malachite

Here is a uniquely structured malachite specimen from Mashamba West Mine, DR Congo. The malachite shows botryoidal forms with a second generation of well organized crystals that seem to be flowing around the rounded shapes. This one is as remarkable as it is unusual!

Lattice Quartz

This is an incredible example of ”gitterquarz” (aka lattice quartz) from the Erongo Mountains of Namibia. The quartz seeded itself parallel to the directional planes of the lattice of the feldspar crystal, resulting in an orderly crisscross arrangement. Black tourmaline needles are included in all of the quartz as well. The formation and symmetry of this one are absolutely perfect! I haven’t come across another as well balanced as this piece.

Rhodochrosite

Here is a lovely South African rhodochrosite. The crystal is multi-terminated, highly lustrous, and exudes a rich, translucent red color. A really gorgeous specimen!

Colombianite

There’s been speculation on as to whether this is a tektite or volcanic glass (like obsidian). I’ve seen convincing evidence for both sides, however I lean towards tektite. Either way, I think they’re pretty neat. They look rather unassuming at first glance, but once backlit they have a translucency that makes them glow. And as the name of the species suggests, it comes from Colombia.

Snowflake cerussite

Here is an intricate specimen composed of reticulated cerussite crystals from Nakhlak Mine, Iran. The cerussite is cyclically twinned resulting in this delicate, snowflake lattice structure. The contrast between this piece having formed in a hot, arid region to create something under conditions that are the polar opposite of what would create an actual snowflake is just amazing. This snowflake won’t melt in your hand though!

Acrylic and aerosol on two 12x36” canvas panels

2024

I started this piece in 2018, though there were times where I painted and repainted over the same spots so many times that I would have to just abandon it for a while. I tend to bounce back and forth between multiple paintings in my process, and because I work a day job it usually takes me a long time to finish anything. But with my paint time stretched so thin it gives me a lot more time to think and conceptualize my pieces. I aim to become a full time artist one of these days. Thanks for looking!
