Here is mine, but I cannot figure out how to get the dock as liquid glass. Would be insanely helpful if somebody could tell me how to.

Books I should read if I want to know everything

now let me rephrase that. I know it's not possible to know everything. But I want to gain a better understanding of the world, of history and want to be able to see patterns across time.

I want to be able to understand history. I want to learn and understand, not rote memorize. I want to learn in a fun way.

are there books like that? I'm not looking for a topic in general, I just want to understand more about how the world works, get into history aswell.

Just finished reading Ring by Koji Suzuki - mixed feelings abt it

eee, hi. not the best reviewer by far, but I'll do my best to write down my thoughts about the book.

to start off, I had been in quite the reading slump - for more than 2 months - and this is what broke the slump. not indicative of the quality of the book in any terms, but I thought it worth a mention. it was definitely interesting.

the book does not really do a great job of immediately hooking in the reader. it starts off pretty boring and generic(ish). the scene in the first part of the book or so didn't really invoke a sense of terror within me like it was probably supposed to. neither did the next one. honestly they were probably just setting up to the events of what has to be one of the most surprising books I've read. not in a good way or bad way.

it was just surprising in general

first of all, about the characters, it felt very inconsistent and all over the place to me. throughout the majority of the story, Asakawa (the main character) is clearly eager to save the life of his family, but at the same time it is confusing because he seems very 'nonchalant' about his daughter Yoko and dismissive towards his wife. he even wishes his wife Shizu would remain quiet like what her name meant.

misogyny was definitely a part of the whole thing, but I don't know if that was intended as the book was set around the time of 1971 I believe? women not having all that freedom, the general perception of them and other factors and whatnot.

it's puzzling because while Asakawa claims he cannot continue living his life without his wife or daughter, he imagines another woman naked when he finds her attractive. he fantasizes about the other woman, Mai (a colleague of his best friend) which is crazy.

His best friend is another concern altogether. According to Ryuji's words, he is a rapist. Asakawa knows this. he also knows that Ryuji has continued to rape women. It's MADDENING how he still allows Ryuji to be near his wife and daughter even after knowing this. It's insane. also the whole ending thing? Turns out Ryuji just claims to be a rapist in front of Asakawa to look like a scoundrel. But he acts as a child with his colleague Mai and a gentleman with other ppl, according to Mai. I did not understand this part at all. Does Ryuji have like multiple personalities? does he like, change personas? Honestly it was very confusing and deserved more clarification. Rape is just treated so normally in the book. Even the old man who raped Sadako, they did nothing else after getting the story outta him.

The book was not terrifying at all, except for a few chilly moments here and there. It was like a murder mystery tbh

The ending did not feel horrory to me at all. Honestly, Asakawa should have sacrificed his family and let the virus die down. Would have been a good ending, maybe. Idk. Don't take my word for it.

Also honestly, I should probably formulate my thoughts more but I'm sleepy and I just wanna get it out ✌️

The ending felt like sci fi ish (pending cataclysmic doom) more than horrory but yeah, I do understand why there would be a scary horror aspect to it.

3.5/5 ⭐ book

Going to Kolkata, what are the best places to get books?

Want to get cheap hauls, but I want to get fiction novels and stuff. Not academic books. Does anybody know where I can find some cheap books?
