First Drive

So I’m going out on my first real drive tomorrow, and I’m just wondering how you guys handle things like turning into a shopping plaza or gas station—basically a turn where you don’t need to come to a complete stop or put it in neutral. Do you just downshift and stay in a lower gear through the turn

Traffic

Okay, so I’m basically forced to learn manual, or I won’t have a car. I live in Miami, Florida, and everyone keeps telling me that driving a manual here is terrible because of the traffic. Is it actually that bad, or are people exaggerating?

Not stalling and mastering clutch

So right now I’m basically forced to learn how to drive a manual or I won’t have a car. I already know how to drive—my old car just died—but a family member is offering me a 2014 Honda Civic DX Coupe.
Today was my first lesson learning stick. I got the basics of upshifting and downshifting, but I noticed that whenever I upshift the car slows down for a second before it starts accelerating again. Is that normal, or am I doing something wrong?
I also kept stalling a lot. I didn’t realize how much clutch control it takes. It feels like I have to let the clutch out slowly and hold it at the bite point for a second before giving it more gas.
Do you guys have any tips for getting smoother starts and avoiding stalls? Also, what’s the best way to handle parking lots, speed bumps, and other low-speed situations in a manual?

Car decision

I’m trying to decide between this 2013 Nissan Rogue and a 2014 Honda Civic manual. The Rogue is listed for $3,499 with 148,000 miles, while the Honda is also $3,500 but only has 60,000 miles. I live in Miami, Florida, so I deal with a lot of city driving and traffic. I’m 19 years old, and while I know I’d have to learn how to drive a manual, I’m willing to if it’s the better long-term choice. Which one would you recommend and why? I’m mainly looking for something that’s reliable, affordable to maintain, and will last me several years.

Fire academy or paramedic

I’m a 20-year-old male in South Florida, and I’m trying to figure out the best path after I finish EMT school.
Should I start applying to fire academies right away and pursue firefighting, or should I go to paramedic school first and then apply afterward?
Part of me feels like I might look too young to recruiters, so I’m wondering if it would be better to wait until I’ve completed paramedic school before trying to get into the fire service.
For those of you who have been through the process, what would you recommend? Is it better to get into the fire academy as soon as possible, or finish paramedic first?

Asking for a friend

I have a buddy who just finished EMT school, and he’s wondering if he should try to become an ER tech or work 911 on an ambulance. His end goal is to become a firefighter paramedic, so he’s trying to figure out which job would give him better experience and look better when applying for fire departments, or if they’re pretty much the same in that regard.

Schooling After EMT

So I’m starting EMT school at Miami Dade College Medical Campus, and I’m not really sure what I want to do afterward. I know becoming a paramedic is one option, but I’m also interested in careers that might pay better and be a little less chaotic or stressful. What career paths would you recommend after EMT?

IPAD for emt school

Hey, so I’m starting EMT school in August and I’m looking to get a nice, affordable iPad that I can use for taking notes and studying for class. My budget is around $200–$400. What iPad would you recommend in that price range, and what apps should I download for note-taking and studying?

Shaky hands

I start EMT school in August, and my plan is to become an EMT and then a paramedic. One thing I’m concerned about is that when I get nervous or feel pressure, my hands can get shaky. Is there anything I can do to prevent that from getting in the way of patient care or skills training?

How hard will it be finding a job

I’m a 20-year-old in Miami, Florida, and I’ll be starting EMT school in August. If everything goes as planned, I’ll finish in December. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this—was it difficult to find a job with just an EMT certificate? My goal is to get certified as quickly as possible and start working so I can gain experience and begin building my career.

Careers as a lost 19 year old

So I’ve been thinking for a long time about what I want to do with my life. Throughout all of high school, I always knew I wanted to become an EMT, and it’s already been a year and I still haven’t gotten around to doing it. I’m planning to start this August, but I don’t know… financially, EMT work doesn’t seem great and the pay isn’t the best.

Because of that, I’ve been looking into other options too, like sales — specifically car sales — or maybe even running my own business someday. I really don’t want to do something that requires years of school or college.

Can anyone give me some advice or share their experiences?

Ems

Hi, I’m a 19-year-old in Miami looking to build a career in EMS. I’ve never really cared about the money — I genuinely love the idea of helping my community. I’m planning to move up to paramedic eventually, and possibly fire rescue as well. I start EMT school in August.

Does anyone have any advice or things I should know before getting started?
