How easy would it be to stay in Houston?

Hello.

I'm a military veteran moving from San Antonio back home and my car broke down in Houston. I've stopped in Houston before and kind of liked the city. I have all of my belongings with me so I thought, what the hell, I might as well try to stay here. It would be cheaper than going home.

How easy would it be to find a room to rent and a job to work at until I get up on my feet? I might be stuck here anyway depending on what the shop tells me about my car.

Thanks 🙏

I'm thinking of getting a saxophone to try but not sure if it's "the right instrument" for me.

I love music and want to learn at least one instrument very well, but not sure which type I'm naturally more suited for. I've heard that everyone has their "instrument" that they're naturally attuned to, but despite trying piano and guitar, I don't naturally gravitate toward them. I can probably learn them if I tried hard enough, but I don't have much interest in reaching for them when I have spare time. They're also a little more difficult for me to play because I have large palms, but stubbier fingers. I've always loved the saxophone and how it sounds, and can imagine myself playing it, but don't want to add another dust collector to my musical arsenal.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

I looked. Should've guessed.

I suppose I should've guessed but this is a bit ridiculous. They denied my claim with a nexus on the grounds that their doctor doesn't think there is a service connection. It is basically a debate between whether a doctor thinks my back injury that I sustained during basic training happened in service or not and their reasoning was that I don't have anything in my service record, which I explained the reason for, and I don't have any continuity of treatment for it, which mostly isn't necessary because it is not a debilitating injury. Just a bulge protruding from my back and some pain or discomfort at certain times.

For other context, I have a skin condition that I filed for and was granted a service-connection in 2023 - also 12 years after I got out, and the only difference is that I had a few visits for it in my service medical record. Me not reporting my back while in the military is the only thing preventing them from granting me my connection, it sounds like.

I'm at a loss for what to do because I don't really know what else to do other than write another letter telling them that this isn't a debate.

How to go about situations involving interested women?

Howdy, y'all.

Fellow man here. I need advice about navigating scenarios involving women who show interest.

For context, I've always been a shy and reserved guy, and situations with women haven't turned out well as a result despite getting visceral interest from some of them at times.

The problem is that I am not what I'd call a "typical guy." I have my own likes and interests and am "just myself." I like both stupid and intellectual pursuits (think "Dumb and Dumber" movie humor but also classical music and opera singing, science, psychology, philosophy, etc). I don't care much for watching sports, working on cars, large crowds or social gatherings, drinking, etc.

Where I run into problems is that it seems people (women, specifically) try to type me and imagine what kind of guy I am. However, when my weird, inexperienced self doesn't meet those expectations, I can visibly see the interest waning on their face and the overall feeling of expression is "disappointment."

As a result, I don't reciprocate or pursue women when I can tell they're interested because it seems better to let them hold whatever fantasies they have of me that they have in their heads than to break that fantasy by making myself known to them and seeing that I'm not some suave, confident guy that has everything seemingly going right for him and is optimistic despite some things in the past "just not working out."

I know dating in our country is weird and all about perceptions and first impressions, but that isn't how I choose to live my life because it seems fake, like sales and marketing rather than being genuine, although that appears to be the norm in society with getting anything that you want these days.

So how should I approach this? I feel like something should be done about it but there aren't many solutions other than "keep trying and you'll eventually find someone who is as weird and genuine as you are" but they seem few and far between and/or have developed some bad habits from past relationships or from playing the same game that everyone else is playing. I am currently 37 and not getting any younger so maybe sometime soon.

All perspectives are welcome.

Thank you.

How long do positive DBQ exams often take to receive a decision?

I had my DBQ exam on Monday and received a decision early this morning. Obviously, I haven't looked at the letter yet and will wait to read the determination when it comes in the mail, but I just want to know the likelihood that it would be approved or favorable if a decision is made so quickly after a claims/DBQ exam?

The NP was quite thorough and said I have great range of motion for my claimed lumbar injury as it is basically just a bulging disk with no other surrounding injury or degradation and mild symptoms at the moment with mild numbness or loss of sensation on the left leg. I'm not expecting a large rating increase as a result but I certainly wouldn't be expecting nor wanting another denial.

Il Mio Bel Foco intro clip

My last voice teacher recommended I learn this song to help me improve, and I assume he thought it was appropriate for my voice.

I haven't had any formal vocal lessons prior to 2024 and it has been spread out since then (a few months at X music school, a few months at Y music school, and a semester with private lessons at a local college).

Any professional feedback from classically trained singers would be appreciated, as is any feedback in general.

Thank you.

Should I be concerned?

I just received this notice for my DBQ appointment in the mail and my examiner is a nurse with no orthopedic expertise and no prior experience working with VA claims. My claim is for lumbar spondylosis and possible degenerative disk disease.

You would think they'd send me to someone who is knowledgeable of the condition they're going to be examining, right?

I submitted my nexus letter and a supporting letter from a former DI and just got a message for this today.

I am hoping this is a good thing because my back should have been connected a long time ago. I just never reported it while I was in service.
