I’d like to move out of Houston

No hate please. I love the city, born and raised, but you only live once yea?

What’s an easier city to move to that is still more affordable, but isn’t super small or bigoted?

In a perfect world I’d move to the Pacific Northwest, but honestly I enjoy the desert too.

Thanks for all honest opinions and points, I appreciate yalls’ time :)

Just a thought

When did people become allergic to using turn signals? Better yet—why do some only remember them midway through the turn?

Advice on moving to the area

Hey! I’m moving to the Houston metro area soon and would love any insight on the area. I’m aware/mentally prepared for the heat, humidity and bad traffic but I’m super concerned about running into snakes. (PLEASE NO PICTURES!!! I have severe ophidiophobia.) Will seeing snakes be a common thing in suburban areas? What other things should I be prepared for?

Commuting into DT

Those who work downtown, where do you live and how long is your commute- morning/evening? Do you use HOV?

Also do you love where you live or do you desire to be somewhere else? With commuting into dt in mind.

Houston Credit Unions

Does anyone know any good Houston credit unions that work with first time buyers? I’m done with my cash car, the repairs are way too expensive now. Repairs have cost me over 10k this year. Credit is great for my age as well as my income.

Transplants: what makes you want to leave? What makes you want to stay?

I’m looking to relocate (from elsewhere in the southeast) and Houston keeps coming up in my search for diverse, affordable metros. However, I’ve never been there, so I’d like some insight before I make any plans to visit.

EDIT: I hope this gives some perspective. I grew up in a major metro but live in a small, somewhat isolated southern city. Here’s what I miss (that my city lacks IMO): diversity, dining options, a decent airport (very expensive to fly out of here), decent shopping mall, high-end anything, entertainment. I feel like anywhere would be an upgrade (except Jacksonville Florida lol). I’m pretty used to the typical grievances about the South in general (politics, heat, etc) so I can’t imagine it would be a huge change in that regard.

Low cost medical clinics?

I’m looking for places to go to for people without health insurance. I need to get a check up and some blood work done.

Does anybody know of any places like that? Even if the place offers low cost visits, that would be of great help.

Thank you in advance!

Honest reviews about apartments!

Hello! I am moving due to a new job and its around the energy corridor. I have contacted a realtor and will be touring apartments around Katy and Houston’s areas like the heights and memorial. Besides touring, I would like to know the reviews anyone had with the apartments I will list under. I’m looking for a 1bed/1bath that would total less than 1500(rent,fees,and bills included). I am open to any recommendation and honest reviews that are recent!! I see people saying that they stay at an apartment from years back and it can very much be different then and now!!

What’s it like living in the Post Oak area?

Specifically, the area near whole foods. Lets say you also work in Post Oak, so commute traffic isn’t a big concern

Where to meet genuine women in Houston? Trying to stay off apps

Pretty newish to the city, Mid-30s male looking to meet someone organically who enjoys the outdoors, hiking, fitness, and an active lifestyle. I work out and hike regularly, play tennis, and spend a lot of time skiing during the winter. Try to travel every month and want to cover all the national parks in the US

I keep a minimal social media presence and would prefer someone similar.

Ebherd or Santé for music + social vibe?

Me and my friend are going out this weekend and trying to decide between Ebherd and Santé
We basically want a place with good music + good vibes, but where people actually mingle and talk to each other instead of everyone only sticking to their own group/section all night.
We would like somewhere that feels social where you can naturally meet other people too (friends, guys, whatever lol), not just stand around.

Which one is better for that vibe? Open to other suggestions too.

Looking for a apt/home Houston

Looking for recommendations on decent apartments, townhomes, or rental homes in Houston with a 20–30 min commute to the Medical Center.

Budget is around $2300 for a 2 bed / 2 bath. I have stable income/good salary, but my credit isn’t the best right now, so I’m looking for places that may be flexible with credit if income is strong.

Main priorities are safety, decent management, and a reasonable commute.

Place to dye your hair purple

Seriously. I have dark brown hair. I need to have it bleached first before I can dye it purple. I don't know if I can do it on my own. Do any of you have recommendations of salons that can do this?

moving to houston

my husband has a job in channel view and i’m
looking for recommendations on good places to live that are family friendly and good school district. i have kids in school so that’s top of the list important. also we’re a bit excited to be close to the ocean, are there any places a little more south still within decent driving distance to channel view to live? i’ve read online a lot about the flooding zones. are there places to steer clear of? any info helps thank you!

to add - we will probably rent first before we buy. the relocation with his job doesn’t give enough time to really scope out a good place to live (they give you two weeks max to find a house & buy it) and we learned our lesson with that on last move.

New to Houston, Westchase or Near Campus?

Hello! My partner and I are looking for an apartment somewhere between the Westchase area and the university campus (or possibly near the university itself). We’re both new to Houston and honestly know very little about the city, so we’d really appreciate some advice.

Our budget is around $1800/month including utilities for 1 or 2bed, and safety is one of our priorities.

My partner recently joined the Rice university, and my job will be in the Westchase area. Right now, he’s staying at 8181 Med Center on a short-term lease, but we’re trying to decide where it would make the most sense for us to move long-term.

We were initially considering living closer to campus because,

  • We plan to use the university recreation gym together.
  • My partner recently got a bike, so we were also thinking it might be nice to live within biking distance of campus.

However, I’m a bit nervous about driving on major freeways/high-speed roads since I will be moving from a very small town and am not used to Houston traffic yet. Someone on this page also mentioned avoiding areas around the 610/freeway-heavy routes, which added to our confusion.

Would it make more sense to:

  • Live near Westchase to make my commute easier if that area is more safer, within our rent budget and has recreational options?

  • Stay closer to the university/Med Center area?

  • Find something in between?

Also:

  • Is it realistically possible to avoid freeways for commuting?
  • Are there any good carpool/public transit options between these areas?
  • Any apartment recommendations or neighborhoods we should look into (or avoid)?

Thank you so much!! Any local advice would really help us!

Edit: We really like the lush green canopy around 8181 Med Center, so we’d love to find a place with a similar feel. However, recent robbery incidents at this residence have made us reconsider staying there long-term.

I understand, looking at our budget, I'm asking for quite a lot. However, suggestions that better align with our needs would be very helpful.
