Rep Eric Woods dismantles SOS Hoskins' cringe excuses for blocking citizen referendums

"MOST TRANSPARENT THING IMAGINABLE" | After Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins again abused his statewide office on Tuesday to block citizen-led referendums he doesn't like, state Rep. Eric Woods, D-Kansas City, picked apart the three main "justifications" Hoskins gave for his clearly corrupt actions.

This is not surprising coming from SOS Hoskins, who was one of the main proponents of Amendment 4 and has long desired to cut off citizens from the power to pass amendments on the ballot.

Hoskins has proven he is too irresponsible, too dishonest, and too untrustworthy to hold such an important statewide office in Missouri.

He should resign, or we should impeach him.

MO Republicans will overturn our votes again if they keep supermajority power

HERE WE GO AGAIN | Missouri voters went to the polls on Tuesday and made a resounding decision on the two biggest priorities of the current supermajority party.

After their overwhelming defeat, past experience tells us this is not the last we'll see of Amendments 4 and 5.

"Missouri Democrats will continue to fight for the will of the people." - Rep. Michael Burton

AMENDMENT 5 | State Rep TROLLS A5 with calculator provision

Before Amendment 5 got onto the August 4th ballot, Democrats argued against it on the House floor. Unfortunately, we didn't have the numbers to stop it because Republicans have a "supermajority."

State Rep. Doug Clemens, D-St. Ann, filed a symbolic amendment to the resolution that required all members of the legislature to be provided a calculator and instructions for its use.

He went on to say it's because if they were doing the simple math on Amendment 5, they'd see what most of Missouri is now seeing: A5 shifts more of the tax burden away from top income earners and onto working families, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities.

ONE WEEK LEFT [as of this post] until Missouri decides the fate of Amendments 4 & 5, and it's extremely important that both are defeated.

Army vet Democrat reacts to false ad for MO Amendment 5

MISSOURI SENIORS HIT HARDEST | Senior citizens are being sold the Republicans' Amendment 5 as something that will make their lives more affordable, but that's actually the group most directly harmed by it.

Why? Because many seniors live on Social Security, pensions, or fixed incomes, and while some of that income is protected from state income tax, a bigger sales tax burden hits them every time they buy the things they need to get by.

As Independence Democratic Rep. Will Jobe explains, that means Amendment 5 doesn’t just "shift taxes," it shifts the burden onto the people least able to absorb it.

If you’re on a fixed income, this isn’t a small policy change. It’s a direct hit to your day-to-day cost of living.

Resounding 'NO' on Amendments 4 & 5

Maybe, just maybe, everyone in the entire state who supports Amendment 5 (largest sales tax increase in MO history) is only reaching out to Rep. Brad Christ to tell him alone.

Because almost everyone else in the state seems to understand that Amendment 5 is just another massive giveaway to the wealthy through lightening the tax burden of the top income earners and increasing that of working families and the middle class.

Amendment 5 empowers future state lawmakers to raise sales taxes on "any goods or services" and rebuilds our state's revenue system to be less stable and hugely vulnerable to any future economic downturns.

It's a constitutional change, meaning it's permanent AND that voters have to approve.

REMEMBER TO VOTE on August 4th.

No, Missouri Amendment 5 does NOT 'cut property taxes'

Nearly every pro-Amendment 5 ad being pushed by a Delaware-based dark money group includes a false implication that property taxes will be cut by Amendment 5 if passed by voters on August 4th.

As Weber explains, that's just not true... at all. Amendment 5 will allow Missouri lawmakers to raise sales taxes on any goods and services.

If the Republican-controlled state legislature wanted to make progress on providing property tax relief, they would have done that instead of this bait-and-switch scheme.

Reaction to cringe-inducing AI Mule Ad for MO Amendment 5

State Rep. Jo Doll, D-St. Louis, reacts to another cringe-inducing AI slop ad from the same Delaware-based dark money group pushing the Amendment 5 sales tax hike in Missouri.

Apparently, they see Missouri's working families as pack animals.

Ironically, the AI mule character is correct in one part of the message: Missouri families SHOULDN'T have to pay more at the grocery store while big corporations get a pass.

However, it's actually Amendment 5 that makes families pay more by opening the floodgates to dramatically higher sales taxes on everyday transactions.

These ads are truly insulting to the voters of Missouri and further confirmation that the Republicans in power right now have completely given up trying to be truthful with their own voters.

REMEMBER TO VOTE on August 4th!

It's just insulting at this point... [Missouri Amendment 5]

Seriously, how dumb do the backers of Amendment 5 think Missourians are?

This ad, paid for by a Delaware-based dark money group, AGAIN attempts to lie to Missouri voters, claiming Amendment 5 would somehow "make big corporations pay their fair share, so you don't have to."

Again, this is just plain insulting to the intelligence of Missourians, a VAST majority of whom already realize that Amendment 5 would put more of the state's tax burden on those who can least afford it and only benefit the top earners.

Remember to vote on August 4th, AND remember who is continuing to stand by this disastrous and unfair policy.

Rep. Lilly Fuchs debunking lies from insane Amendment 5 ad

DEBUNKING LIES ABOUT AMENDMENT 5 | If you live in Missouri, you're probably aware by now that Amendment 5 isn’t a "tax cut" as the Republicans in power claim, but it actually just shifts the tax burden to a structure that hits lower income folks harder.

That's what makes it so frustrating to see the party entrenched in power blatantly lie to their own voters/supporters about the MASSIVE impact Amendment 5 would have on their bottom line.

Amendment 5 hurts roughly 80% of Missourians and only benefits the highest income earners.

This will be on your ballots on AUGUST 4th -- and the deadline to register to vote in that election is JULY 8th!

Lee's Summit Democrat reacts to Gov. Kehoe's weird claims about Amendment 5

"NO MATTER HOW YOU SPIN IT" | Rep. Kemp Strickler responds to Gov. Mike Kehoe's claim that passing Amendment 5 (sales tax hike) would somehow make "billionaires pay."

Strickler points out that Gov. Kehoe is attempting to invoke the growing frustration about billionaires and wealth inequality while trying to sell Missouri voters on a policy that would further enrich those same billionaires and shift more of the tax burden onto regular working folks.

Missouri voters will decide Amendment 5 on AUGUST 4th.

Rep Boyko debunks BS ad about Amendment 5

We've gotten a lot of comments about an extremely misleading PAC-funded advertisement that's circulating in Missouri, trying to convince people that the extra sales taxes they'll have to pay if Amendment 5 passes will somehow "make big tech pay, so you don't have to."

SPOILER ALERT: It actually makes YOU pay more, so rich folks don't have to.

SOS Denny Hoskins Betrayed Missouri

In February, Denny Hoskins told us he'd never hand over Missourians' voter data without a court order, and that lawmakers would know about it first if that happened.

Last month, he handed it over anyway, with no court order and no heads-up to the voters. Missourians deserve a Secretary of State who keeps his word, and protects their data instead of handing it to Washington.

This is both shameful and infuriating at the same time.

Missouri Democrat explains problems with Amendment 5

"IT'S SIMPLY NOT TRUE" | That's how State Rep. Steve Butz, D-St. Louis, described the claim that working class people will see a net decrease of their tax burden if Amendment 5 passes.

The truth is roughly 80% of Missourians will pay more taxes if that happens.

It's because a $100 grocery bill hits a $45,000 household a LOT harder than it does a $450,000 household. If we change our entire tax system to collect exclusively from sales taxes on goods and services, ONLY the highest income earners benefit from that change. Everyone else ends up poorer.

AMENDMENT 5 will be on the statewide ballot on AUGUST 4th.

What's REALLY in the GOP tax hike resolution

GLAD WE CLEARED THAT UP | We just wanted to make sure that Republican Rep. John Simmons is aware of what is in the resolution he voted to support.

Missouri's Regular Legislative Session for 2026 ends tomorrow and it will be remembered as the session when Republican politicians voted to pass the largest sales tax hike in Missouri history.

Unless voters take action at the ballot, it will permanently give politicians the unlimited ability to raise sales taxes on goods and impose taxes on any services.

Missourians DO NOT want this, but the elected Republicans are no longer working for roughly 80% of them.

MO Republicans want you to forget they took away voter-approved sick leave

"EMBARRASING & SHAMEFUL" | Around this time last year, the Republicans in Jefferson City forced through a complete overturn of the VOTER-APPROVED earned sick leave and minimum wage laws which passed on the statewide ballot just months earlier.

During the House debate, state Rep. Jaclyn Zimmermann of Manchester called out the Republican politicians who supported the betrayal. She highlighted the clear rejection of the Christian principles which many of them profess to follow.

"All I am hearing here today is that we are not going to take care of the less fortunate, we're not going to take care of the poor and we're not going to take care of the sick," Zimmermann said.

Missouri deserved better.

Columbia Democrat explains how income/sales tax plan hurts senior citizens

'MORALLY WRONG' | State Rep. David Tyson Smith, a Democrat from Columbia, argued against the resolution (HJR 173) that would allow state lawmakers to raise sales taxes on any goods and services in order to shift the state's tax burden away from high income earners.

He describes the resolution as immoral, because it recklessly disregards the thousands of Missouri seniors who don't pay state income taxes right now and therefore would only see their daily costs increase under the plan being pushed by Missouri Republican politicians.

Missourians have one more chance to stop this: The 2026 ballot.

MO Rep. Betsy Fogle defends public education against privatization

PUBLIC SCHOOLS = PUBLIC GOOD | During one of her final speeches on the House Floor, state Rep. Betsy Fogle of Springfield passionately defended the effort to provide all Missouri children with free access to a K-12 education.

Her remarks came shortly before the Republican-controlled Missouri House voted to pass the state's $50 billion budget, which included $60 million of taxpayer money going into the private school system.

"Education should not be something that only a few can afford," Fogle said. "I'm not saying there are not gaps and problems within our public school system, but it is so much easier to stand at a mic and tear a system down than it is to fight to fix it."

Missouri Democrats are committed to fixing it.

"WHEN IS IT GOING TO BE ENOUGH?" | State Rep. Betsy Fogle of Springfield, who serves as the lead Democrat on the House Budget Committee, pushed back hard this week after Republicans put $60 million of the state's general revenue into private school vouchers, leaving even less money for the state's public schools.

Each year, Republican politicians continue to privatize more parts of the education system, -- essentially selling off the best investment we can make in the next generation of Missourians.

Public money should stay in public schools. Period.

Q: IS IT REGRESSIVE?
A: YES.

Chesterfield Republican Rep. Ben Keathley is fully aware that the tax plan being pushed by Missouri Republican politicians is deeply regressive, in that it exclusively benefits high-income Missourians while shifting more of the state's tax burden onto those earning the least.
