Why do people request anime that make them cry?

EDIT: I got a lot of different answers, so thank you to anyone who contributed. I'm not gonna respond to any more comments from now on, since I feel like the question got answered, but I'm gonna leave this post up for now since it was an interesting discussion. Bye!

Can I ask a question? (I'm being serious, not sarcastic and hope this is allowed here.)

What's up with people (seemingly mostly young anime fans) looking for anime that will make them cry? I've seen this request numerous times over the last few months. And it always seems like it's not so much about looking for an "emotional" anime, an "engaging story" or "likeable characters that you care for", but explicitly one that "makes me cry". And if an anime fails to trigger this bodily reaction, some people are disappointed (I read a post like that talking about "Grave of the Fireflies" a few days ago in another subreddit. They said the movie was not sad enough).

I mean, I get that you sometimes may need a good cry and hope a movie will help you with getting the tears out. But is that all it is? Then why not watch a movie you've cried to before, where you know it will give you the feels you want to feel?

If I watch a movie or a series and it makes me cry, well, then I cry. It happens. If I don't cry, I don't hold it against the movie. I take it for what is and I might still have enjoyed it a lot - even without crying.

But I'm surprised that so many people are actively asking for animes that will make them physically cry. Can someone enlighten me please?

Witch Hat Atelier dt. Synchro

Which scene shows Sydney Sweeney's best acting?

Hi, I have a question and hope you can help me.

I've watched two movies with Sydney Sweeney (Anyone but you & The Housemaid) and I felt like she did fine as an actress. However, I've read a lot that she is really good on Euphoria and that this is where you can see her best acting.

Which episode would you recommend me to check out? I'm not gonna watch the whole show, sorry, based on what I've seen and read it's just not for me... But I still want to check out her best acting performance to date. Please let me know which episode (and scene) I should watch (with season and episode number, please.) Thank you!

Edit: Thank y'all, I watched some of the scenes you recommended!

Original Broadway Musicals of the Past 25 Years

A recent post by another user got me thinking about how so many musicals (old AND new) are based on existing IPs, like a movie, a play, a book or a music artist's life or song catalog. Which made me wonder: How many fully original musicals did we actually get on Broadway in the last 25 years?

So, here is a list of Broadway musicals (from the year 2000 to the present) that are fully original. Shows about historical figures or events are NOT included, unless they do more than a more or less "straightforward" retelling and take major liberties to tell a new story with these characters. Also not included are revivals of shows that had previously been on Broadway (for example, Anything Goes). However, I have included shows that had their first production Off-Broadway or elsewhere and took many years to arrive on Broadway.

Shows in italic are built on an existing idea or concept (or something like a newspaper article) but create a new story around it, for example as a parody.

 • Urinetown (2001)

 • Avenue Q (2003)

 • Bombay Dreams (2004)

 • Caroline, or Change (2004)

 • Brooklyn (2004)

 • The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (2005)

 • In My Life (2005)

 • The Drowsy Chaperone (2006 on Broadway, first production in 1998)

 • Curtains (2007)

 • In the Heights (2008)

 • Passing Strange (2008)

 • [title of show] (2008)

 • Next to Normal (2009)

 • The Story of My Life (2009)

 • The Book of Mormon (2011)

 • The People in the Picture (2011)

 • First Date (2013)

 • Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2014 on Broadway, first production in 1998)

 • If/Then (2014)

 • The Last Ship (2014)

 • Something Rotten! (2015)

 • Allegiance (2015)

 • It shoulda been you (2015)

 • In Transit (2016)

 • Dear Evan Hansen (2016)

 • Bandstand (2017)

 • Falsettos (2016 on Broadway, first production in 1992)

 • Getting The Band Back Together (2018)

 • The Prom (2018)

 • Flying over Sunset (2021)

 • A Strange Loop (2022)

 • KPOP (2022)

 • Shucked (2023)

 • Gutenberg! The Musical! (2023, first production in 2006)

 • Maybe Happy Ending (2024)

 • Two Strangers Carry A Cake Across New York (2025)

 • The Last Five Years (2025, first production in 2001)

 • Schmigadoon (debatable) (2026)

 • Honorable mention: Bring it on (2012, based on the movie franchise, but with a new story and new characters)

If I missed any, let me know.

This is not to say that musicals based on existing material are inferior. A lot of the most popular shows are like that, like Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Les Miserables, The Phantom of the Opera, Hadestown, and Hamilton...

I just thought it would be interesting to look at this list and see that some original shows were very successful while others faded into obscurity, just like shows based on existing IPs.
