Coho are fun but I could not keep myself off the mountain this weekend. This time of year I do better targeting them in the inlet channels in lakes rather than streams. Was able to get into staging Kokanee as well as brookies.

Got about 6 brookies and a limit of Kokanee. Everything’s a little colored up by now but that never hurt nobody :)

Also had a beautiful girl stop while she was trail running and talk to me about the fish for a few minutes. I am STILL kicking myself that I didn’t give her my number. If she’s somehow reading this, send me a message lol

Finally made an attempt for coho last night. Guess I’m done with the brookies now :)

And I want to ask about huckleberries. I know this is the fishing sub but you guys specifically have been helping me with them this year so I want to ask.

How do you predict a good huckleberry year? And why was the crop this year so bad? Does a colder winter help? More precipitation in spring? I’m really hoping to get into them next summer and I want to understand why they didn’t pan out this year.

Went for a quick trip after work and got into them better than I expected to. Biggest brookie measured at 12”. Also released two big wild rainbows.

I’ve thought that the last like 4 trips were going to be my last for the year but I guess I’m just going to keep fishing for them until they stop biting or the season closes. Basically until they give me a reason to stop :)

Met up with someone I’d been giving some advice to on here. Did some hard bushwacking into a beaver pond I’d never fished, and caught lots of fish in the pond and outlet stream. Brought home around 15 between the two of us. Not bad for this late in the season.

Did anyone get any good huckleberries this year? We found a patch that had to have been untouched but it had only produced a few tiny berries.

The south side of hood was surprisingly productive today considering how late in the season it is. I brought home 6 brookies and lost count of how many rainbows I landed.

Today was my first time really giving it an effort on an actual fly rod too. Oh man that was fun.

This has been the best trout season of my life. Something was in the air this year, I caught more big trout on hood in a single summer than I have in my entire life. Stuffed the freezer with well over a hundred brook trout.

I love Mt. Hood more than any other place on earth, and I love killing brook trout. And I love helping you guys out when I can :). I hope to see more posts from you all, NOT burning spots, but sharing success stories and passing along knowledge so that we can all become more familiar with one another, and hopefully create a nice little fishing community on here. Hopefully I get to fish with some of you guys next year.

At the coast for a couple days and the perch bite has been nonexistent for me. But I love the fact that there is free seafood on every rock pile and tide pool :)

PS- anyone finding ripe huckleberries yet? The last I checked a couple weeks ago nothing was really ripe yet.

Yall have seen my posts. I have this fishery completely dialed. I would be willing to give up some very specific information, possibly even meet up out there and get you in the right spots, if you can put me on one or two good huckleberry patches in return.

I hiked around a small creek on the north side of hood today and picked it apart. Couldn’t believe how many huge brookies were packed into this tiny creek. I found one deeper hole where every cast produced a bite for like 45 straight minutes. Then hit a south side creek on the way home and Caught another handful of brookies.

Also kept a big wild rainbow that swallowed my rooster tail, and wasn’t going to make it. That one hurt but at least I caught it in a stream where you’re allowed to keep a couple.

Also caught several large cutthroat lower in the system before getting higher upstream and finding brookies. Lost count around 20 and brought home a lot of fish.

Go get them

Went again today. Brookie bite was spotty but the rainbows were nonstop. I think I caught around 15 bows. They seem to appreciate the breathing room after removing some brookies. Today was the first time I ever encountered more than one rainbow in this stream.

Average size for bows was 12-14”.

Also caught this 16” beast of a brookie :)

No limit in streams, detrimental to the native cutthroat, and the best eating freshwater fish by far.

Brought home about 25 yesterday, good average size. Had one on the bank that was pushing 20” but the hook popped out before I could grab it 🥲

I found this while wading pretty far up a fairly remote creek in northwest Oregon. I was there fishing, I don’t know much about rocks. Is this a good find?

I brought home 46 today… best eating freshwater fish in the world in case you didn’t know. Go get them, they’re infesting mt. Hood and severely outcompeting the native cutthroat and rainbows.
