Hagg lake fishing

Hagg lake fishing

I apologize beforehand for the dumb question - I am planning on going fishing at Hagg lake this Friday and it’s my first time ever. I’ve got all the stuff I need but I was wondering if I am able to fish anywhere around the bank or if there are dedicated areas to do that? I saw the map but just wondering restrictions and couldn’t find anything

Thank you for the help!

I want to get into the shad run. I have a boat but not sure if or where I can get it in the river. Any pointers on where would be great or if you want to show me I’ll take you out on the boat. I’m available Saturday or Monday.

Oregon Coast Trip - Fishing Ideas?

Will be traveling along the Oregon coast in July and staying in a few different cities. I will be in Portland, Astoria, Cannon Beach, Pacific City and Florence.

I have a kid that likes to bass fish, fish in small lakes, fish in creeks and rivers, etc.... he just like to fish. Looking for something simple and easy.

Any ideas for coastal fishing? Are there any piers? I'm in Florence for a few days... Anyone rent fishing gear that I could use just to sit on the beach and ocean fish from the shore? Any recommended fishing experiences? Could be guided... Thanks!

Sandy River Springer Inquiry

Planning to visit Portland for work in the middle of June. Want to try to snag some Springers in the Sandy on the weekend. I am flying, and have already snagged my license. Since flying, I think I will pick up the Shakespeare Catch More Fish Salmon Spinning kit in town- https://www.sportsmans.com/fishing-gear-supplies/spinning-combos/shakespeare-catch-more-fish-salmon-spinning-rod-and-reel-combo-8ft-medium-heavy-power-2pc/p/1903066 and some roe/ sand shrimp.

I may get some heavier braided line and pick up a chair, knife, and net from Goodwill or so. Trying to keep costs pretty low, which is why I am avoiding getting a guide. I plan to donate pretty much everything back to Goodwill at the end of the weekend.

Open to any recommendations on setup, good spots, gear, or anything else that may help. Know the basics but open to learning new things. Thanks! 😄

Trout on the lower Clackamas?

I was out at Barton park very early last weekend and was seeing a bunch of fish rise. I was questioning this but then I saw some bird, an Osprey I believe, grab a fish. After that I saw a few much larger fish rise.

Anyways I am relatively new here and have heard from a few people that targeting trout on the lower Clackamas is mostly not worth it. I was wondering if thats true? I was planning on taking my 5wt out and attempting to catch some.

I don't have the gear to steelhead yet so I would be elated if people have success fly fishing for trout that close to Portland.

EDIT: I have been informed that these were smolts. Advice I got was go up the clack for trout or try streams!

Easier access tidepools/coastal fishing

Hey all. Previously I've made a post on getting some easy access spots for fishing. In that post I mentioned how I had gotten into fishing to get out and lose weight. While I've come down a bit, I still have some mobility limits. A good example would be steep jetties are pretty risky for me.

I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions on easier access coastal spots? Ideally where parking is close-ish to the beach. I'd love for there to be access to tidepools, but not requires. Nye beach has been nice for surf perch fishing, granted I don’t have much luck some days. The Newport Crabbing pier has been awesome as well.

I'd love to be able to harvest some muscles and try for rockfish, but a lot of the spots are pretty dicey for me to get through. What are your suggestions? Thanks for all your previous suggestions, last spring/summer were pretty dang fun!

You guys know of any Oregon specific hunting/fishing podcasts?

I listen to Oregon First Hunting & Fishing, Outdoors Adventure Podcast and The Blacktail Coach Podcast from time to time but my favorite is MeatEater. I just wish I had more content regarding all things outdoors in Oregon. Anybody have any good recommendations? I love to hunt deer, elk, turkeys and I’m interested in bears. I also love fishing for salmon, bass, trout and steelhead (still haven’t caught one though). Thanks in advance!

Shoreline river Salmon gear?

I’m trying to get set up for cast and reel Salmon fishing from the banks of the Rouge River, and the Willamette in the future.

what are people using as far as rod and reel set ups/specifications?

I think I want a bait caster set up, but want to hear any input you have. what length, LW, and action are your rods? What are your reels rated for? And what type of bait/lure jig whatever are you using?

thanks!

Visiting Oregon May 20-25 — Best public salmon and big trout spots within 3 hours of PDX? (Non-resident angler from Georgia)

Hey everyone! First time fishing Oregon and I could use some local knowledge from people who actually know these waters.
I’m flying into PDX on Tuesday May 20th and leaving Sunday May 25th. I’m coming all the way from Georgia specifically to chase salmon and big trout and I’m willing to drive up to 3 hours from Portland to find the right water.
Here’s what I’m looking for:
🎣 King Salmon / Spring Chinook — I know the Columbia is open May 23-25 downstream of Bonneville. Are there any specific bank access spots locals recommend that aren’t completely packed with boats? I was looking at Drano Lake on the Washington side — is it worth it from the bank?
🐟 Big Trout — Rainbow, brown, cutthroat — I don’t care what species as long as it’s a quality fish. I’m used to chasing wild trophy trout in the Georgia mountains so I’m not afraid to hike in or work for them.
🏔️ Willing to travel — I have a rental car and will drive up to 3 hours from PDX. I’m actually interested in more remote less crowded spots over the popular tourist areas
Questions for the locals:
1. Is Drano Lake worth fishing from the bank during the May 23-25 open days or is it too crowded without a boat?
2. Any hidden gem trout streams within 2-3 hours of PDX that don’t get hammered by crowds?
3. Sandy River — worth fishing for steelhead and trout in late May or has the run mostly passed by then?
4. Any local tackle shops you’d recommend stopping at for up to date reports when I land?
I’m an experienced angler, not looking to be spoon fed exact GPS coordinates — just a general push in the right direction would be hugely appreciated. Happy to share reports from Georgia mountain trout fishing in return!
Thanks in advance — can’t wait to experience Oregon fishing for the first time! 🤙

Questions about hiring a guide and boat on the Rogue with a kid

I'm visiting the Grants Pass area soon to visit my sister's family and am gonna take my nephew and his dad fishing. He's a little country boy and loves fishing, bugs, boats, trucks, etc. His dad enjoys it but it's not a regular hobby of his like it is for me.

He is 6, is that too young for a guided trip?

Also last time I visited I had looked up guides and saw a guy with a pizza oven on his boat but couldn't find it again, does that ring a bell to any one?

Oregon Fishing regulations

Retired, disabled guy here. 65 years old, never been in trouble with the law my entire life. Been working really hard on my Homestead. Just moved to Oregon from Wa two years ago.

Woke up today thinking how nice it would be to get a line in the water but know nothing about fishing this area. Checked out the regs and it appears that I’d need three Masters degrees and a complete geological survey just to decipher them.

This place is open from this date to this date , 600 ft below the so and so bridge and not more then 800ft. Barbed hooks, no barbed hooks, dynamite approved with a class two flak jacket, corn ok but no drinking kool Aid while fishing, catch and release everything but guppies and salmon” bigger than 8” but not more than 20”. You must wear plaid if fishing in Douglas Countu or Jefferson County but plaid strictly prohibited in those counties on Tuesday snd Thursday before 2 pm and after 3pm.

This is absolutely the most frustrating thing I’ve encountered in ages. I don’t even own anything plaid and could cook meth with less potential penalties. The thought of doing 5 years in prison and paying a $5000 fine for catching a trout is mind vboggling. Fucking ridiculous! GIVE ME A BREAK! I JUST WANT TO GO FISHING!

Any not so secret river/stream spots to learn fly fishing for trout?

Probably been asked a million times but I enjoy the interaction. Also, I’m not looking for any honey holes, just some easily accessible places to learn how to fly fish for trout. Places that regulars all know about. Only places I’ve ever tried are wallowa lake and the deschutes near tumalo. Had a lot of success at the lake which is what gave me the bug, but I’m out of Hillsboro and would like some suggestions maybe closer to mt hood or the coast range. Rivers, creeks, lakes, idc. I like to fish for salmon, steelhead and bass usually but would like to get into panfish and wild trout. My regular rivers are the sandy, Clackamas and Wilson but would prefer something smaller than the clack and sandy. Thanks in advance!

September Camping and Fishing!

Hey guys,

A friend and I are looking to come to Oregon in September for about a week to camp and hopefully catch the salmon run.

We have some experience fly fishing for trout in Oklahoma/Colorado, but I'd imagine we'll need heavier fly rods, so I'm looking for some general advice there and suggestions on where to go and any notable regulations to keep in mind that might not be obvious to someone new to salmon.

And we're hoping to do some dispersed camping, so any info on that would be greatly appreciated, as well. It's not super common where we live since most land here is privately owned.

I have read that September can be a concerning time for wild fires and there are often burn bans, so gear suggestions would be welcome, too.

Thanks in advance!

Government cove

Was going to go smallmouth fishing in this area on Saturday, but I’ve been told that the tribes have closed it to the public. I’ve reached out to a game trooper I know in the area and haven’t had a response yet. Anyone know if this is correct? If so, is there any other good smallmouth spots in cascade locks?
