First hip injection today

47 F, started pain management visits in June after 3+ months of increase hip and lower back pain, L5S1 fusion 17 years ago. Started with medication, X-rays and PT with no change, did SI joint injections with no change to pain in left. Hip, MRI showed labrum tear.

Followed up 7/31 with hip doctor who specializes in labrum’s and he stated Thani would be a strong candidate for a left hip arthroscopic labral repair, Arthroscopic cam impingement femoroplasty, and Arthroscopic pincer impingement acetabuloplasty. He stated recovery would be 4-6 months before return to normal activity and 6-12 months to full recovery. I live alone and my daughter is graduating college this spring and we have a big vacation planned so trying to an avoid surgery.

Got a hip injection with guided ultrasound today. Doc said she saw a lot of inflammation on the ultrasound so hopeful that I will see a decrease in pain.

2-3 hours after injection pain was down to a 1 or 2 but now almost 12 hours it is back up to my normal 6-7. Is this normal? Does this mean the injection failed?

Has anyone had surgery and a shorter recovery time? Anyone able to completely avoid surgery with injections, OTC meds and PT?

Labrum tear

I am a 47 year old female and have been experiencing lower back and hip pain in both hips for over 9 months. The pain is constant and feel deep inside my hip and tightness and pressure in my lower back. Pain is consistently a 6/7 but can get to a 9 if I am laying on my side or stomach.

Got an appointment with a pain management doc in May. Got X-ray which showed arthritis and bone spurs in back and a bulging disc. I have an L5-S1 fusion 13 years ago. Started PT. Doc suspected SI joint causing the pain. Had an injection in May of steroid in my SI joint. Doc found significant arthritis in left hip. After injection back and right hip pain where much improved (2/3 pain level) but no real improvement in right hip.

I asked for an MEI before doing another injection since I haven’t seen much improvement after 6+ weeks of PR and initial injection. MRI of back showed disc bulge, non fatty venous tumor, and bone spurs and arthritis on spine. Left Hip MRI showed 2.1 cm labrum tear. I am shocked by this since I don’t remember injuring my hip and I am not athletic at all. Pain remains constant but no clicking or giving out in the hip. During PT I have noticed decreased range of motion and significant loss of flexibility through both hips and lower back and hamstrings. I spend much of my time sitting for my job and am not very physically active outside of walking and hiking. Now I am wondering next steps…

Is this a large tear? Surgical? Recovery time? When can I expect to be pain free? Should I continue with pain management or do I need to find an orthopedic for follow up?

MRI for lower back pain

Had spinal fusion of L5-S1 15 years ago with no issues or concerns. Have been having lower back pain and left hip pain for nearly a year, steadily a 7/10 with nothing providing relief. Have tried PT, injections into my sacroiliac joints, oral prescription pain meds and OTC pain meds with no relief. Doc ordered MRI of back and hip. Wondering if any of the findings are significant? Most concerning to me is the finding of a hemangiona but I haven’t heard from my doctor yet.

MRI of back listed the following:

- Remote postsurgical changes of L5-S1 dorsal fusion and discectomy.

- Presumed lipid-poor hemangioma in the left aspect of the L4 vertebral body.

- L3-L4: Spinal canal and right foramen are patent. Mild left foraminal stenosis due to disc bulge and facet arthropathy.

- L4-L5: Spinal canal is patent. Mild bilateral foraminal stenosis due to endplate spurring and facet arthropathy.

- L5-S1: Level of fusion. Spinal canal and right foramen are patent. Mild to moderate left foraminal stenosis due to endplate spurring and facet arthropathy.

Delayed flight reimbursement

My daughter’s flight from Berlin to Boston (with a layover in Amsterdam) was delayed due to mechanical issues. We purchased the tickets through delta but the flight was KLM and all delayed info, vouchers and Re ticketing was done through KLM.

The 8 hour delay caused her to miss her connection in Amsterdam, required her to stay the night and arrive in Boston 18 hours later than the original flight. Travel insurance only offers reimbursement for expenses and she didn’t have any since KLM provided vouchers and hotel. As a US citizen I am unfamiliar with the EU delay reimbursement that I keep seeing online about eligible for 600 euros for delayed flight? Is this true? Do we file through KLM? How quickly do they process and payout?

Long weekend trip in July - input and recommendations welcome

My daughter (21) goes to school in Worchester and will be interning there this summer. My mother (70) and I (47) will be visiting and want to do a long weekend on the cape the fits around her work schedule. We will be driving in from Worchester early Thursday afternoon and returning late Sunday night.

Currently have reservations at Charm on Main in Brewster. Hoping for a relaxing trip with beautiful scenery, good food and fun shopping. We are pretty laid back and go with the flow but like to have a skeleton plan to follow.

Arrive/check in 7/16 - dinner in Brewster, check out the beaches at sunset (considering JTs seafood for dinner)

7/17 - breakfast at the inn, drive to Chatham for a day for shopping and eating, check out the seals and pier, Friday night concert in Chatham (considering imprudent oyster for late lunch or dinner)

7/18 - drive to ferry for ride to Martha’s Vineyard (from hyannis it is almost $300, from Falmouth it’s less then $100 - is it worth driving to Falmouth to save?); currently have a car rental at oak bluffs but may cancel since it looks like public transportation is easy and accessible; need restaurant recommendations

7/19 - breakfast at the inn or a recommended brunch spot, Hyannis and 2:30 whale watching tour and then after dinner drive back to Worchester

Would love some food recs, beach recs, plans for MVI.

We decided against PTown because of the road congestion and the ability to boat over from Boston in the fall.
