Guess what I found in the closet. My wife's old radio. She used it for listening to AM (MW) and FM, not SW. It's a RadioShack DX-396.

I wasn't expecting much, it doesn't even have an external antenna jack. It's a single conversion superhet with no frills. Wow it's very sensitive. I'm in NJ, here's a DX from Canada that sounds like it's next door. 740 kHz CFZM Zoomer Radio from Toronto, ON. I like the lyrics on this one, kinda funny.

She hates tuning, static/QRM/QRN and wants convenience. So I got a replacement that solves this, she's gonna love it. More on this later.

I caught the Wolverine Radio signoff and just missed the verbal id because I was setting the clock on my radio. Doh, that was a *Homer Simpson* move. 🏴‍☠️🦜

The signal was pretty strong and I lost track of time while enjoying the broadcast.

I woke up early flipped on the radio and got a nice DX, 735 miles as the crow flies. HF was crap tonight so I turned in early and got up to some nice MW DXing. You can see on the spectrum/waterfall display that things were busy. Plenty of DXing from Canada as well in both French and English like CFZM Zoomer Radio on 740 kHz in Toronto ON in English and CJBC on 860 kHz also in Toronto in French. Approx 352 miles coming in like it was next door.

It's 1755 UTC 30 Aug 2026, Sunday afternoon. Here's a surprise. HF conditions this afternoon were not impressive so I switched to the FM broadcast band on my Tecsun PL-520. I'm sitting on my patio with a temporary makeshift 30 foot longwire antenna with 9:1 unun and short counterpoise.

The station is 98.1 FM WOGL ("Big 98.1"), Roxborough antenna farm, Philadelphia, PA. ~53 miles from QTH.

You can hear the difference when I unplug the external longwire antenna and use the radio's whip. I'm gonna improve the antenna, make it longer and more permanent.

Conditions are good right now. I'm pleasantly surprised because the bands were dead not that long ago.

Wolverine Radio is the only thing shining on 43m at my QTH. Other swashbucklers are nowhere to be found. They just made some weird sounds and silence. Signed off. Looks like at my QTH 43m is owned by the crickets

HF is terrible tonight at my QTH in NJ. MW on the other hand is rather good. You can see on my Malahit SDR 2.4 spectrum/waterfall that things are busy. That's Zoomer Radio CFZM in Toronto Canada coming in like a local. That would be a very long walk from NJ.

Nice strong signal. Propagation smiled upon me tonight. Conditions have been hit or miss lately, mostly miss. 🦜🏴‍☠️
