Doing Pharmacy to then pursue graduate dentistry?
Hello! I'll try keep this post short as I am on a time crunch to make a decision: I was set to do Biomedical Sciences in uni this year, confirmed my place at a uni, only to receive a Clearing offer from Greenwich uni for MPharm & I've never been more lost, and the deadline to accept is tomorrow 8:40am
I've done work experience in a community pharmacy & really liked it, could imagine myself working there and it was my backup career option, as dentistry has been what I've always wanted to do. I applied to pharmacy this year but unfortunately due to my ALevel results didn't get in, but miraculously secured the offer as I did a Clearing interview on results day - but annoyingly it came now that I've settled on Biomed
I feel like if it would be dumb if I passed up on the offer because MPharm is so competitive & I was initially fighting for a place before. But the thing is I love biology so much, & can see myself enjoying my Biomed degree which will help me secure the 2:1 needed for graduate dentistry. I hated ALevel Chemistry & especially organic, a friend showed me their pharmacy modules and it looks hellish. Not sure if I can stomach it, but I heard after year 1 the course gets more clinical & less science focused which is fine by me.
I know nothing about Greenwich uni so I'd be walking in completely blind, whereas my Biomed uni I've already visited the campus, loved it & could picture myself studying there. Also Greenwich is further, so the commute + rigour of MPharm is concerning me as to whether I'll have enough time to build up dental experiences outside my degree + prep for UCAT, whereas Biomed offers more flexibility/less travel time. (My friend told me for MPharm they're in uni 5 days a week, whereas Biomed is 3-4 days typically).
My backup career for Biomed in case dentistry didn't work out was a Biomedical Scientist but I'm not sure if I'd be happy doing that for the rest of my life, whereas being a pharmacist I really like the job a lot + better salary & there will always be work for me after I graduate.
I am conflicted as I'm not sure if it's worth taking a 5 year detour with MPharm to then pursue graduate dentistry anyway, but the job prospects, security, enjoyment of job + salary is what's making me second-guess myself. And if dentistry doesn't happen I won't need to worry about finding a job.
Any advice would be much appreciated
