Advice on first year dental school

Hi I’m starting 1st year of dental school next month and I’m skeptical that the workload or pace of university may be a bit difficult to cope with because of how different it can be to a levels and 6th form.Does anyone have any advice on 1st year of dental school/ being sort of worried you won’t be able to catch up with the work?

Also I know every universities course structure is slightly different but if anyone had any advice for incoming 1st years or wanted to share what their course structure was like that would be super helpful.

Ucat study group

UCAT Study — 10 People

I want to collect 10 people on WhatsApp or Discord where we can keep each other accountable and actually stay consistent.

The idea is to:

- Compare mock scores and track progress

- Set daily/weekly targets

- Help each other with questions and strategies

- Share useful resources

- Push each other when motivation drops

- Keep each other accountable and make sure we’re actually putting the work in

I’m not looking where people join and disappear after a few days. Just 10 people who are genuinely committed to locking in for the next 5.5 weeks. If you’re serious about your UCAT and want to study with people who are in the same position, DM me and I’ll add you

What’s my best route to dentistry?

Hi everyone,

Recently I’ve been looking into studying dentistry in the UK. Unfortunately, my situation isn’t ideal and therefore, entry onto dentistry courses are very limited to me. For some context:

I am 23 years old. I have 8 GCSEs at 77666555 and 1 iGCSE at grade 6 (achieved in 2020). I have A-Level Business, Biology, and Maths at Grades BDD respectively (achieved in 2022). I then studied a BSc degree in business management and achieved a 2:1 grade (achieved in 2025).

I’ve sat the Gamsat previously to give it a go. I didn’t do enourmous prep and achieved an overall of 58. I didn’t think that was too bad. I sat this less than 2 years ago.

Unfortunately, my mental health suffered through my studies and therefore, my grades fell. I also wasn’t focused on exploring career options at the time and therefore, I didn’t focus on my studies at all. It is no excuse, but unfortunately it’s too late.

In terms of work experience:

I have worked as a management consultant for almost 2 years (I worked one year part time alongside my degree).

Interestingly, during my first 2 years at university, I was desperate for a job and applied to anything that was available. So I secured a part time role in the NHS as a healthcare assistant, and also a bank role as a mental health support worker.

It was after leaving these two roles during the end of my second year at university that I realised I really enjoyed the healthcare industry. But since I was already 2 years into my degree, and had secured a role within management consulting, I decided to stick with my current degree and completed my business management studies.

Since around 6 months in working as a management consultant, I’ve been dreading work. I miss my roles within health & social care. The jobs were much more difficult than my current job, less flexibility, and less pay. But I enjoyed them more than my current role. I liked interacting with several people, I found the science interesting (whenever I saw procedures going on), I liked dealing with incidents, I liked seeing odd things, etc.

I decided to take some action. I looked into healthcare roles and I felt that medicine or dentistry would be best suited to me. I’d be able to work in a clinical environment, do a job that I’d enjoy, be paid well, and would have a job that I could take around the world and still be paid okay.

As a healthcare assistant, I had been able to shadow doctors on wards and emergency department (A&E) on several occasions so I had an understanding of the job role. I also spoke to dozens of doctors about their perspective of medicine as a career; the benefits, the drawbacks, the challenges, and their tips.

I only needed work experience in dentistry to compare both. I decided that I’d spend a week shadowing a dentist. I shadowed a general dentist for a week and it was quite nice. Some mouths were 🤢 but I’ve seen worse at the hospital. After that week, I pondered over dentistry as a career. So I decided I’d shadow an emergency dentist. I quite enjoyed this experience as well.

Between medicine and dentistry, I felt dentistry aligned more with my requirements for a job. Although it was less interesting than medicine, it definitely has benefits that outweigh this whilst still remaining interesting enough for me.

I’ve made the decision that I’d like to apply for dentistry. But my situation makes this very difficult and I’m conflicted on which route to take. Do I sit the Gamsat and hope that I get into Plymouth (the only university that will take me on considering my situation and Gamsat result), do I resit my GCSEs and A-Levels?, or do I do an access course?

I’m really not sure what route to take and would appreciate any advice.

Thank you

How likely is it that Bulgarian graduates will have to take the ORE after 2028?

I'm really sorry if this isn't the appropriate place to ask this question, please let me know if it isn't and I'll remove the post!

I'm from the UK and considering studying dentistry in Bulgaria and then returning here to practice. Initially when I was researching where to study, I was considering Georgia because of the low tuition fees, the shorter length of the course and because it was easy to get a spot in, but because of the ORE I have opted for Bulgaria instead.

From what I understand the current arrangement the GDC has for recognising EEA dental qualifications is going to run till 2028 but they haven't said what might happen after that.

If I were to study in Bulgaria I'd graduate in 2032, and if Bulgarian graduates are required to take the ORE to practice in the UK by that point, then I'm wondering whether choosing Bulgaria over Georgia is a worthwhile decision.

Is there any indication of what the GDC might be planning to do with regards to EEA qualifications after 2028?

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Whats a good ucat??

Everyone here gets highs sores but idc. I want a general understanding of what is actually needed. Im personally applying for dentistry so they require higher ucats than med applicants - but I would still appreciate a med applicants input.

I have seen that qmul requires like 2350+ but ive PERSONALLY heard of people getting an interview with 2100. That same girl got an interview for kcl as well. So i dont get it?

Also my understanding is that as long as u are able to secure an inteview, moving onto getting an offer is based entirely on ur interview (the stats and stuff were needed to get u one in the first place) - is this correct?

I would also appreciate if any could share their scores and if they were able to get an interview and where - so i have an accurate understanding of what is actually needed.

ICL, at the end of the day, the higher the better and getting 2300+ is deffo possible but ibr icba. I have really high GCSE stats and A*AA predicted. I genuinely cant get myself to care about the ucat enough atp becuase, at the end of the day, someone with 2100 was able to get in and ive seen people with 2300+ not get in (or even if they did, it doesnt matter cuz someone else had to do less work to get in).

Moral of the story, If i have good stats elsewhere, would like a 2100-2200 ucat be fine?

Dentistry options

Hi hope someone can give me advice. I’m in a dilemma. I applied to dentistry for 2026 entry and got 4/4 rejections pre interview. It’s now results day and I achieved AAA and gcses of 8889999
I applied to optometry as my 5th choice and got in as its a career that i wouldn’t mind having and have an interest for
However i do still want to at least try for dentistry so would it be worth it doing the UCAT with about 5 and a half weeks of prep from now, and still going to uni for optom. Only if i get a good competitive ucat score (arguable 2200+) then I’ll drop out to take the gap year and pursue dentistry for 2027 entry, otherwise i’ll remain in uni.

Graduate Entry into Dentistry/Medicine via Biomedical Sciences

Hello! I am choosing between Kingston University and Plymouth University for Biomedical Sciences - I put Kingston on UCAS via Clearing but am now indecisive. My end goal is graduate entry into dentistry (or medicine if it doesn't work out), but I want Biomedical Science as a genuine backup career in case neither work out, so Kingston's IBMS accreditation & placement year are important for me

I want to know: does the university where you get your Biomedical Sciences degree from affect your eligibility or chances for applying for graduate entry medicine or dentistry? Do grad entry medicine or dental unis care or place weight on where the degree comes from? And if so, which do or don't?

If I got a 2:1/First from Kingston, would medical/dental schools generally consider me on the same basis as someone with the same degree but from a Russell Group or higher ranked university?

Particularly interested in actual experiences: if you've done Biomedical Science at a non-Russell Group uni & applied to grad entry medicine/dentistry, which unis did u apply to and were u told that the uni you attended was a disadvantage?

Ideally I would like to stay in London & having a guaranteed placement year is reassuring for me to pursue Biomed as a backup career, hence why I am heavily considering Kingston, but Plymouth have a direct transfer route to their dent/med degrees provided you meet the requirements which gives me more opportunity, if you take their Biomed course, but moving out of London is something I am not fully prepared to do yet, unless attending Kingston does disadvantage me or limit where I can apply for graduate entry

Thanks in advance!

HOW TO GET GOOD PREDICTED GRADES ON GAP YEAR FOR DENTISTRY APPLICATION- ADVICE NEEDED!!!!!

Hi, I would be really grateful for any advice I can get ! Basically results day went terribly wrong for me where I unexpectedly got BCC in bio, chem, maths, i will be retaking my exams next year. The gap year was planned, but my school refuses to predict anything higher than the results I recieved. I cannot afford to be spending like HUNDREDS OF POUNDS on private tutor centres so I can be predicted AAA so that I can go through with my dental application this october. what shall I do????

I’m currently preparing for UCAT

I worked so hard for the months leading up to exams so I am devastated with my results

Dentistry Rankings

Why is it every ranking(such as guardian and top universities) rank KCL as the worst or second worst uni for dentistry while academically it is ranked top? I always dreamed of going to KCL now I am kind of reluctant because the entry requirements are insanely high for an apparently mediocre course.

Unsure about medicine, considering dentistry

I'm going in to year 13 in a couple weeks and my whole of my year 12 was set on applying for medicine. However, I've been thinking that I should go to dentistry school instead. I relate to dentistry more because I've had quite a few issues with my teeth in the past and I also like the art aspect that dentistry offers. The problem is that I would have to change multiple things in a short period of time: all the unis I've been looking at, my personal statement and I've done work experience in a hospital, not in a dental clinic. Overall, I'm not sure if this is a good decision but I don't want to enter medical school and regret my decision.

SJT for dental foundation training prep advice

How did you prepare for situational judgement tests? Are prep courses worth it?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a fourth-year dental student going into fifth year, and I’m starting to think about preparing for situational judgement tests.

We’ve been getting advertised quite a few preparation/training courses, but some of them are **really expensive**, so I’m wondering whether they’re actually worth the money.

For anyone who has sat an SJT:
How did you prepare?
Did you use a paid training course, and if so, was it actually helpful?
Are there any particular resources you’d recommend?
Do you think a course is necessary, or can you prepare effectively on your own?
Would really appreciate hearing about people’s experiences, especially from those who have recently gone through the process. Thanks for any advice and help :D

Am l fucked ? Please help

Hii a bit of back story I have been battling myself with career options the whole of year 12, l have only recently decided on dentistry and l am very sure it is what l want to do, I decided around late June, after contemplating on all the work experiences I have done and realising dentistry was my favourite, around the 8th and 10th of July my grandparents both passed away in Zimbabwe, on the 13th my whole family went over to have the funeral, with my Ucat booked for the 2nd of September- despite my grief l knew l had to prep for the Ucat especially since id only decided so late, anyone who knows about the deep outskirts, rural areas of Zimbabwe know there is a total lack of WiFi and connection, knowing this l packed 2 Ucat books over so l could still prep without WiFi and since we’d planned to come back to the uk on the 22nd I thought I’d start online work when l get back with at least some foundation knowledge, my suitcase however got lost (fml) I spent a whole day panicking and trying to get a Ucat book in Zim ( was not successful), due to some paperwork issue with my mom l couldn’t come back - I’m labelled as a dependent of a skilled worker, I have only come back today - 9th of August, apart from the odd library trip here and there (2) l have basically been unable to do any Ucat prep- the reason I didn’t go to the library as often is that my aunts who’s house we lived at lives basically 4 hours away from civilisation, so to go to the library we’d have to commit 8 hours on travel alone, I’m genuinely so scared l have around 24 days until my Ucat and l need to know if it is at all possible for me to still be able to score well, I am genuinely willing to do anything, l haven’t felt this much excitement about a career ever and lm not exactly fond of the idea of a gap year but I wouldn’t be against it, but my parents are 100% against a gap year and basically said they wouldn’t support me if l did, please I need help
