Mailing lists as alternative social infrastructure to social media

Mailing lists as alternative for social media networks

So if any of you [socialize] regularly you might’ve noticed that local music and political scenes often end up using a social media platform for info. Instagram, Facebook, uhhh, whatever else people use. With the worsening of data harvesting I’m interested in how to create low barrier social networks for info.

My use case is p low risk, music shows and raves. But I want to do it both as a demonstration for others doing more high risk stuff and to reduce scene dependence on corpo social media. My main thought is mailing lists. Make it a basic “scan QR code, input email and a passphrase” (pass to avoid bot), with the hosting place delisted from search algorithms. I’ve heard you can further obfuscate the data on clear sites with other tech stuff but I’m a screws and bracket girl not a computer wiz.

Basically, I’ve come to ask for info aid:

\- Have you used mailing lists to organize?

\- What security issues do they present?

\- How can I make signing up easy for humans who I meet IRL but difficult for bots or internet trolls?

\- Are there currently maintained projects that provide the digital infrastructure to run a mailing list? With basic security so emails aren’t listed on the clearnet and stuff like that.

I know RiseUp allows mailing lists but I haven’t seen that project get updated in forever.

Please keep suggestions accessible for the luddite I am, I don’t code and don’t own a home pc, I am homeless and cannot setup a personal server.

Solidarity etc etc etc

For people who do live hardware acts, how do you market yourself?

So I’ve been working on launching a new project, but am thinking about how I describe myself, the tagline

I’m kicking around the idea of “Live DJ” because it’s probably the most understandable in terms of “basically what the set sounds like”, but I don’t DJ.

I’ve tried “Live Hardware” before and I think that was completely lost on 99% of people

I’ve had “Live Electronic Music” since I started making new social media stuff but idk

For people gigging with a live act, how do you market or describe yourself

How do y’all market yourself in the rave/club scene?

Mostly how you describe yourself to promoters. Kicking around the idea of calling myself a Live DJ just to make myself more intelligible for people in terms of expectations, but idk

For people gigging, how do you describe yourself in your marketing?

Our new zine “Narcan Is a Dead End” is now out! Free to print and distribute

Free to download and distribute: https://mxflow.noblogs.org/zines-writing/

All sales prohibited, for free only.

It should go without saying but I’ll say it anyway: we aren’t advocating to ditch naloxone, it’s a life saving drug. We continue to distribute naloxone along with this zine. Institutional critique does not mean letting our friends die from overdose.
