Beagle Recall & Other People's "Advice"
Sorry but this is a long one ....
So I rescued this little guy who is 6 months old - Wisdom Panel came back 100% Beagle.
He is a sweet loving dog - has a lot of puppy energy but is completely house trained and very good with my kids.
Yesterday, my son forgot to close the front door and he got out of the house without his leash. This is the first time this ever happened in the past 3 months we owned him.
Now generally, this wouldn't be a problem as I could call him for a treat or just follow him and grab him as he sniffs around for something. Unfortunately though, there was a rabbit at the top of my curb near the street - he saw it and he was GONE like the Flash.
I tried to get him back because not only was I worried he may get hit by a car on the street but our next door neighbors have 2 very mean pitbulls that have attacked other dogs on the street. They are well known by Animal Control.
Well it just so happens that the pitbulls were outside behind their electric fence and my dog saw them and darted for them. By the grace of God I was fast enough to tackle my dog before he got within the invisible fence area but one of the pitbulls definitely got zapped in the process.
Anyway, my parents are now telling me that I am not training him right and that their dogs never had any problem with recall with proper training with treats. Their previous dogs were a Golden Retriever and a German Shepherd.
I tried to tell them that recall is VERY difficult for beagles but they just say I'm not trying hard enough. They sent me videos the past 24hours on all these trainers on how to do recall properly.
I tried to tell them that I have no problem with recall in a normal environment but if my guy is off lead and sees a rabbit or something he REALLY scents, he's gone no matter what. They say that's just bad training.
So I have 2 questions:
How can I better train him or get better equipment so that this doesn't happen again?
Are my parents correct? Is it just my bad training?
Ok I need to crowdsource some fun....
My wife is away this Sunday afternoon... I have 3 young kids (5-12 range). I need something fun to do.
Location: Ridgefield, CT willing to drive around 40 mins.
Go!
Golfing with Kids Suggestions...
My 8 year old daughter took an interest in golf last year. We got her lessons, she did a camp, and we go to the driving range routinely.
So we finally wanted to take the plunge and try a 9 hole round together. I play regularly so I booked a twosome twilight round at 5pm on Monday at my local public course.
She doesn't hit far, so my intention is for me to hit my tee shot and then once we are 150yds in, she would drop in the fairway by me and play the rest of the hole.
I don't want to be "that guy" and piss people off at the course by bringing his kid- are there any other suggestions you have to make it both an enjoyable experience for everyone?
She's really great in terms of golf etiquette for an 8 year old and I wouldn't need to worry about anything related to bad manners on the greens, yelling during other people's shots etc.
Employer withholding pay, union not helping...
Location: Connecticut
My employer (State of CT) required training on a new digital platform we are all required to use. I completed the training and received my certificate/badge.
As part of the union, my union negotiated that we should receive $600 that would be put in our May paycheck. I never received the $600 and immediately let them know. They confirmed that my name was accidently left off of some list for payroll while everyone else got the $600.
My union told me to contact HR. I did. HR told me to contact Payroll. I did. Payroll told me to contact my union. So quite literally a circle.
As of two weeks ago I emailed everyone, all departments, on 1 email thread explaining the situation. Nobody responded. Followed up last week and today - still no responses.
What are my options? I think it's discrimination that I am singled out and the only one not getting the payment for the training.
Wisdom Panel Wrong?
This is my buddy, he is 5 months old. He is a rescue. I did a Wisdom Panel and it came back 100% beagle but I am skeptical of that conclusion.
He is super long and people keep thinking he is a dachshund, or at least a mix. Whenever we meet other beagles, even grown ones, they look much different in proportions. My dog is almost as long as all the adult beagles we know.
He is 5 months and 18lbs. Any thoughts?
Running Companion?
Hi All,
I have a 5 month old beagle (black/tan). I love him dearly and he goes on nice long walks with me every morning (about 1.5-2 miles). Afterward he still has a bunch of energy.
I'm interested in running with him, but since I don't know the breed that well yet and I also don't know if he is too young - does anyone else run with their beagle?
I would only do 2-3 miles at most and I'm not worried about pace. Do you think it's doable?
Lessons Learned: Early Morning Round
So for those that hadn't seen it, I posted yesterday for advice on my 5:30am tee-time. It was my first time playing that early. You can see the original post here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/s/7VIsOzvdhb
After finishing up my round, shooting 91, here are the lessons learned:
Warm Up. Based on other's advice, I got to the course around 4:45 and warmed up. It was definitely worth it, although felt weird doing practice swings and putting in the dawn.
Tee Times are flexible - at least for the course I played. So I booked as a single and 5:30 was the first time on the tee sheet. I called the day before to confirm and I asked if I could walk. The Pro Shop specifically said no walkers until 2pm on weekends. So I figured the course would be ready to play at 5:30 with carts if I was on time. Well, it wasn't....
Myself and several groups behind me were waiting outside the Pro Shop at 5:35 waiting to pay and get keys for the carts. I didn't actually tee off until 5:40ish.
- Shitty people are shitty people regardless of the time. The foursome behind me had the tee time after mine - but because the Pro Shop opened late they were also behind. The guy at the pro shop checked them in before me so when I got to the first tee they were ready to tee off. There was no starter.
I asked them what their tee-time was but they said they were the first ones. I told them that's impossible because I had 5:30, and they said they were with me and we can all play together. After a little back and forth one of the guys was nice enough to let me just tee off. I told them I wouldn't hold them up. Never saw them after I teed off. I'll chalk it up to the guys being upset about being delayed by the clubhouse.
Putting is tough. Putting is the best part of my game - I rarely 3 putt especially if I have a proper warmup. Had multiple three putts today. Could figure out speed. Some greens were fast, others slow. I was right behind the guy rolling them. Tough to gauge, but I assume it will click with more practice in early morning rounds.
No problem seeing ball. Everyone kept telling me I might lose the ball in the rough. I had no problems. Didn't lose a ball the entire round.
That's it. Thanks.
Why are Beagles the best family dogs?
I keep hearing Beagles are great dogs for families, especially with children. I'm wondering why this is? I hear they are very energetic and little terrors as puppies. Can anyone with experience give me the Pro's?
When To Neuter?
My vet has my boy being sent in at around 5.5 months but I'm worried that may be a bit too soon.
Does anyone have any experience with neutering early or late and the possible effects of doing so?
Chew Bones Recommendations
I have a 5 month old beagle puppy and he is somewhat destructive of furniture, cardboard boxes, houseplants etc.
I've bought so many types of bones for him to chew but he is not interested in any of them. I've tried pigs ears, bambones, yak chews, frozen bones, bully sticks. Nothing seems to work! He just takes them from me and then leaves it on the floor.
Can anyone recommend something that he will actually want to chew?
Help! Need Financial Guidance
Sorry if this is too long, but we have so many moving parts it's a little overwhelming. I need assistance in either consolidating my accounts and general future planning of my household finances

I'm 42M, married, 3 kids. I make 200k a year. My wife is a homemaker but worked previously before we had kids. Our financial accounts are as follows:

Debt: $120,000 - all of this is our mortgage. No other outside debt. House is worth 700k.

Savings Account: $175,000 - also includes our emergency fund.

Brokerage: $50,000, broken up into 2 accounts (one is mine, one is my wife)

Physical Silver: $6,000 in American Eagles

Kids Accounts: each child has a UTMA account (roughly $5k in each) and a 529 account (roughly 20k, 16k, 10k) distribution by age.

Wife 401k: $350,000 - basically on "set it and forget it" until she retires unless she goes back to work.

I am a government employee and will have a pension when I retire - based on current calculations it will be around 10k per month. I also will get health coverage as part of my pension and Social Security. I don't currently have a Roth IRA.

Should I just use the current brokerage and savings to knockoff the mortgage? I was originally planning to just pay it off in the next 18 months with my income so that we can still have the high savings account balance in case of an emergency.

Do I actually need a Roth IRA as well if I have my pension, social security, and my wife's current 401k?

In all honesty I don't plan to ever "retire" in the traditional sense. I'm one of those people that needs to (and likes to) work.

Should I consolidate my kids accounts? Start new ones?

Any guidance would be appreciated. I have a general lack of focus on what I can, or should, be doing.

Test Results & Communication with Doctor
I'm a 42M and have noticed that I have a lot less strength and muscle mass then many of my male peers. Additionally, a year ago I had broken a rib after a simple trip and was extremely surprised my bones were so weak.
Anyway, I had my doctor test my testosterone prior to my annual physical and it came back as follows:
Total Test: 287 ng/dL
Free Test: 33.4 pg/ml
I am thinking at this point I need some sort of supplementation to help get my levels better but I am not sure.
What should I ask my doctor? Should I see a specialist on TRT issues or is this something a standard family physician can assist with?
Poor puppy ate the end of a joint at the local park.
Had to take him to the emergency room to figure it out. I was afraid it was hypoglycemia, but after several tests they found THC.
They said he likely picked it up at our local park I walk him at. It cleared his system and he is all better and back to normal now. My poor boy.
Golf Handicap Question & Experience
Quick disclosure: I've been playing, taking it seriously, for about 2.5 years. My handicap is a 29 but I count everything and play 100% by the rules , including putting out everything.
Yesterday I was randomly paired with 2 guys that play in the men's league at my course. These guys were GOOD. The best players I've ever played with. It looked like a different game. Since we exchanged names and talked quite a bit, I looked at their handicaps and they were 1.4 and 2.2 respectively.
The crazy thing is, we all played an enjoyable and quick 3.5 hour round of golf. I shot a 101 but was keeping pace with them. I only lost 1 ball into a water hazard, but didn't have any other ball searches that would delay the game. We chatted a bunch and it was just generally a great experience.
Anyway, I am just posting this because I know how nerve racking it can be for new players when you are paired up with someone good. These guys were chill and great players and even though my handicap is high, we all still had an enjoyable time.
