F1 2016 turns 10 years old today!

This was my first F1 game I ever played, and it felt like yesterday when I went to game to get the pre ordered copy. Been doing a career mode on it recently and this game still holds pretty well, the graphics still look good, the Ai make mistakes which adds a layer to the game, yes the ai do silly things at times and the physics are interesting but I was really impressed by the fact the ai can overtake each other, in some games they barely do but I was getting overtakes at Monaco! And they had some good wheel to wheel with each other. This was first game in which career mode returned and I like the small niche thing that showed which teams brought upgrades, you don't get that anymore

I am glad this was my first game, I played most of the games ever since

Motogp stats that dont sound real but are

I start, Rossi only has 1 grand slam, it is well known he wasn't strongest in quali however this is the same number of grand slam as Quartararo and Oliveira which was the part that shocked me

Suzuki have won a race more recently than KTM and Yamaha

The 2006 finale holds the unique status of being the only time the wsbk champion and motogp champion of the SAME year standing on the podium

Aston Martin disaster season so far has overshadowed the disappointment of most of the midfield teams minus Vcarb and Alpine

The likes of Williams and Haas have not really nailed the regs and not made a big step up from last season. Audi have the excuse that it is their first season. For me only VCARB and Alpine have really made gains from last season. Williams have no excuse seeing the previous 2 years were already focused on 2026 just to be nowhere and be most disappointing team after Aston despite having the merc engine. Looking over previous reg changes there can sometimes be a midfield team that make a step up and only really Alpine done that as VCARB were already close to if not top of midfield. Haas for me disappeared after Miami, whatever they did has turned out very badly cos start of season they looked promising now barely notice them

Best races were both titles were already sealed

The 3rd place playoff at the world cup the other day which was a thriller although it pretty much meant nothing, got me thinking, what are some of the best races where both titles were already sealed and so didn't really mean much? Yes there are a few ramifications like who finish 2nd in wdc or constructors but let be honest that doesn't catch much interest.

I think the most notable one for me is the 2019 Brazilian gp, chaos broke that loose and so much happened, from the ferrari civil war, to Verstappen and red bull bossing it, to Gasly first podium, to the infamous Hamilton Albon collision and Mclaren ending it long podium drought. This was a 2010s classic.

Why is Hamilton so good at Silverstone?

Think it is well known Hamilton always kicks into gear at silverstone. 9 wins here and 15 podiums in total his strongest track in general. Yes he has had some dominant cars but even from ground effect era in 2022 to even last year he still performed at a good level getting podiums and winning in 2024 and convincingly beating Leclerc while being in the hunt for pole in 2025 (the only time in a quali session that year I can say that). What exactly does Hamilton do which make him so good at silverstone?

Silverstone always throws classics

If u have never watched Motogp, Phillip Island is basically a track that always delivers a cracking race and most unexpected things can happen there. I get the same feeling with silverstone. I go as far as saying it is the race I look most forward to every season

Silverstone has thrown so many crackers and some unexpected stuff. The track is just very good for racing and the weather variety makes it even spicier.

Going through the past few races there:

2025- Wet weather chaos and Hulk first podium from completely nowhere

2024- Hamilton first win in 3 years in another chaotic wet race, and 3 lead changes in first 20 laps alone iirc, my personal favourite race of that season

2023- Mclaren which up to that point were not even in the picture for being a top 4 team was suddenly competing at the top. Norris getting one of most shocking lead from start to send crowd wild

2022- Sainz get his first pole in a chaotic quali where Latifi even managed to qualify in the top 10. That nasty Zhou flip. And of course the famous "THROUGH GOES HAMILTON" moment which is one of my fav pieces of commentary I have heard and icing on the cake the smooth operator first ever win prob the best race that year

2021- The infamous copse crash

2020- Hamilton three wheel finish

2019, 2018 were pretty damn good races aswell

Imo Silverstone pretty much consistently throws a top 4 race of the year, can't wait for what this season has for us

Where will be our best opportunity to get a win this season?

I say we had 2 chances to win this season already in miami and suzuka, unfortunately strategy team was sleeping in miami and in suzuka the safety car gave antoneli that track position. If I have to be honest since miami we have not made the step up I hoped with both Ferrari and red bull getting stronger and making bigger gains

What circuit we think will be opportunity to get a win this season? As much as I hope it's silverstone if I have to be honest I don't expect much and it will be a miracle if we even get on the podium there cos that track is gonna be mercs playground most likely and I fully expect ferrari especially Hamilton to be on it there. Could it be Hungary maybe? Tho the poor performance in Monaco suggests this chassis and aero aren't up to scratch. This car is just all over the place and just fixing the reliability already gave a conundrum

Is this KTM one of the most unreliable bikes in the modern era?

Another race another issue for acosta, these reliability issues are rdiculous, it's rare manafacturers have more than 5 mechanical issues a year, the KTM is breaking down every 5 laps it seems, why is the bike so unreliable and what other bikes were notably unreliable?

Fun fact: The last 2 times Hamilton started on front row he started 2nd to russell, Alonso was also last outqualified by stroll, Norris finished 3rd and Hamilton won both races. Both weekends also had a all british top 3 in a competitive session

Coincidence? I think not!

The greatest F1 intro of all time?

From the UK I grew up watching F1 with the chain intro, watching the program from the start just to see the chain intro is a core memory of mine, every sunday tuning in on my tv.

Look what sky took away from us :(

Vague players you owned/gambled that ended up being a masterstroke

A few favourites I owned that were either overlooked/a gamble:

-Hwang Hee chann before asia cup in 23/24, was scoring or assisting and before he left he got a brace before half time v brentford, what a hero

-Trossard for that dgw 24/25, got a brace against ipswich and scored v palace which was one of my best ever differential picks. Also had Kiwior for that week who also hauled

- Muniz and semenyo in 23/24 at 4.5m

- Mukiele this season was amazing hold till his injury

- Not so much a pick but started areola several times in 23/24 and he got me some amazing hauls with his pen saves both of which I played him in v chelsea and everton, on that topic great 4m starting keeper

Scariest random versions of a driver

A few for me:

- Hamilton whenever he touches Silverstone Asphalt

- Norris whenever he wears a suit with a tad of white

- Verstappen whenever he has a engine penalty

- Stroll occasional senna esque performance in the wet

- G4sly 2020-2021

- Leclerc at spa

- Baku Perez

- Norris whenever he breathes in styrian air

- Verstappen whenever he touches Sao Paulo tarmac

Your fav Mclaren moments

The next grand prix is Monaco, where 60 years ago we had our first ever race!

I been watching F1 since 2011 and so been a Mclaren fan ever since then

There have been many highs from the titles in 2024 and 2025, and many lows in 2015 and 2017. But that is why I love this team. It is a emotional rollercoaster!

But what are your fav Mclaren moments since watching F1/supporting the team?

For me my fav moments where Norris first title and the end of our long title drought in 2024

Also loved our vodafone livery, that was what got me into this sport in the first place, and even better was that driver lineup of Button and Hamilton.

Other moments I love:

Sainz first podium in 2019 Brazilian gp to end our long podium drought

Ricciardo win in 2021 Italian gp which was also a 1 2 to end our long win drought

Norris getting the lead in the 2023 British GP off the line a moment I went batshit crazy

Piastri winning the 2023 Qatar sprint in his debut season, the race getting a double podium aswell

The 2025 season itself, papaya on top!

Love to hear your moments and as always papaya on top!

Why were there so many scandals in the mid 2000s in F1?

Now there are still some scandals nowadays but it seemed there was a scandal every 2 years in the mid 2000s. Just to name a few:

- Indygate in 2005

- Spygate in 2007

-Crashgate in 2008

- Near breakaway of the sport 2009

So 4 scandals in a space of 5 years. Is there any reason why this time in F1 was chaotic, I didn't watch F1 till the 2010s and even then there weren't nearly as many scandals in that decade and the most recent scandal I can really think of is Abu Dhabi 2021.

How much of a shock was Brawn title success in 2009?

I have watched the documentary on it but how big of a shock was it really? Is it a similar kind of underdog story as Leicester winning the premier league?

Was it really seen as a shock that Honda got that chassis right seeing how bad the previous seasons were?

u/MysteriousBoss3816 — 3 months ago

I started watching in 2011 so never witnessed 2000s f1 however have watched some races.

If I had to pick 5 races that caught my eye from the 2000s:

- 2003 British gp

- 2007 European gp

- 2006 Hungarian gp

- 2005 Japanese gp

- 2008 British gp

What are your 5 fav races of the 2000s?

COTA is a fairly new track relative to many others in the calendar, being built and finished in 2012. Ever since then it has mostly been street circuits as new additions (mugello was a one off same as portimao till 2027). For me COTA is a perfect example of how a track should be built, they have took inspiration from other tracks like silverstone and turkey, but more importantly it has character and is a fun track for racing too. Love driving it in the games. For me COTA is what new entries should be, proper race tracks with character. That is why I want sepang, nurburgring or hockenheim back. Good to see Turkey and portimao return

Just like in football, certain jerseys have sponsors that make a jersey iconic like samsung for chelsea or O2 for arsenal. There have been many sponsors in F1 over the years that just made a livery iconic too. For me the best example of this is Marlboro on Mclaren and Ferrari combination with vodafone. As for others I think Vodafone for the chrome silver Mclaren, 7up Jordan or Camel Williams.

What are some of your favourite sponsor livery combinations?

Zarco win on home soil was the moment of the season, Zarco backflip and the crowd singing la marseillaise was cherry on top. Gave me goosebumps

To make it less reactionary I will go over previous seasons aswell

Categories: Quali pace, Race pace, tyre management, consistency, wet weather,

Quali pace:

Russell takes that for me, Norris got great quali pace too but Russell 2024 had some great laps

1-0 Russell

Race pace:
Norris takes it here, his race pace yesterday was very impressive kept up with antonelli throughout, Russell we are yet to see this really tested

1-1

Tyre management:

Norris takes this for me, Norris seems to do well to stick behind and keep his tyres in tact, well seen yesterday and last season, races like silverstone is good example, norris just stuck behind piastri till the pitstop for slicks

2-1 Norris

Consistency:

Tie, Russell we are yet to see over a season but his first races at merc he finished in the top 5 for first 9 races I think. 2024 and 2025 he was doing the same letting the chaos ahead endure and that is where the does nothing p3 meme came from lol. Norris championship winning season he kept on stacking podiums and seasons like 2021 was even top 3 in championship some point.

3-2 Norris

Wet weather:

Tie, both are very good in the wet, Russell main wet weather performance is his spa heroics to get a front row in a shitbox williams. His 2024 Brazil drive should have been a win had that red flag not happened, that imo is actually one of his best drives tbh. Norris is particularly good at changeable conditions, races like silverstone and canada 2024 highlighted this, he had great pace as it transitioned. Both have had some bad ones in the wet but so has even schumi hamilton verstappen and senna. I say both evenly matched in the wet

4-3 Norris

Norris edges it on these categories however it is very close
