Modern Pinoy hip-hop is influencing the youth, kaya sunod-sunod ang school shootings ngayon

Personally, I think one factor na hindi natin masyadong pinag-uusapan is the influence of modern Pinoy hip-hop sa mga kabataan.

Puro glorification of violence, guns, killing, gang culture, at pagiging gangster yung themes ng maraming genggeng songs ngayon. Take Wadadeng by YG x Tus as an example, pati na rin yung ibang songs ng Oside Mafia, Olgang, Young God, at iba pang artists na similar ang style.

Just look at the contrast in the lyrics. From “You can't talk peace and have a gun” to “Pag nadinig mo na 'yung Glock, you better fucking run.” That alone says a lot about how casually violence and guns are being portrayed and glorified in some local rap songs today.

Compare that to the older generation of Pinoy hip-hop like Curse One, Repablikan, Ex Battalion, etc.

Obviously, violence has many different causes and music isn't the sole explanation. But if we're seriously talking about the things that influence today's youth, why are we so quick to dismiss the media they constantly consume?

Maybe we should start asking whether constantly romanticizing guns, violence, and gangster culture has some influence on how younger listeners perceive violence.

At the very least, it's a conversation worth having.

Not Everyone Who Dislikes Filipino Films Is “Feeling Superior”

I recently came across a post/article arguing that people who don't watch or don't like Filipino films are looking down on local cinema or trying to feel superior. Ironically, it also seems to shade the Spider-Man films in the process. Personally, I think that's a bit of a stretch.

And there are legitimate reasons why some people have become tired of mainstream Filipino movies.

One of them is the repetition. Paulit-ulit yung same actors, same pairings, and sometimes even the same formulas and tropes. May mga bagong actors naman, pero there are also cases where people feel that certain actors continue to get opportunities because of connections, influential backers, or family background. I'm not saying every nepo baby or actor with connections is undeserving—there are genuinely talented ones—but I understand why audiences can become frustrated when it feels like connections matter more than talent or suitability for a role.

Another thing that can be distracting is the casting of Filipino or half-Filipino actors who grew up abroad and aren't comfortable speaking Tagalog, then putting them in roles that require natural Filipino dialogue. Being half-Filipino or growing up abroad isn't the problem. The issue is whether the actor actually fits the role and can deliver it convincingly.

And I don't really agree with the comparison that Hollywood also keeps repeating franchises, therefore people shouldn't complain about repetitive Filipino movies.

Take Spider-Man, for example. Yes, Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland's versions are technically reboots/reinterpretations, but they still gave us noticeably different takes on the character. Different tones, characterization, supporting characters, stories, and overall vibes. Makikita mo talaga yung differences between the three versions. So I don't think it's fair to simply use Hollywood reboots as a way to dismiss criticism about repetitive formulas in local cinema.

At the same time, I'm not saying Filipino cinema is bad. There are plenty of great Filipino films, and I absolutely think local filmmakers and genuinely good local productions deserve support.

My point is simply that supporting Filipino cinema doesn't mean we should shame people who don't enjoy it, and criticizing recurring problems in local cinema doesn't automatically mean someone thinks they're better than everyone else.

In fact, I think telling people that they're “feeling superior” just because they prefer foreign films can come across as gaslighting and guilt-tripping. Instead of actually addressing why some audiences have become disconnected from local cinema, you're making them feel guilty for simply enjoying what they want to watch.

And this is where I find another part of the discussion ironic.

There are people who criticize those who prefer foreign films for supposedly “feeling superior,” but then there are also posts that mock Filipino MCU/Marvel fans simply because they prefer watching Marvel movies over local films.

If mocking someone's movie preference is considered wrong, shouldn't that apply to both sides?

Let people enjoy what they want to watch. You can encourage people to support Filipino cinema without making them feel guilty for choosing something else. At the end of the day, people are allowed to have different tastes in movies.

Anong thoughts niyo dito? Does this kind of post help Filipino Cinema?

Related to my previous post:

One thing I find ironic about this whole discussion is how some people accuse those who criticize or don't watch Filipino films of being “feeling superior,” yet there are also posts like this that mock Filipino Marvel/MCU fans simply because they prefer watching foreign films over local ones.

If we're going to criticize people for supposedly looking down on Filipino cinema, then the same standard should apply to everyone. Mocking someone's taste in movies or implying that they're less cultured or less supportive of Filipino cinema doesn't make the argument any better.

It's perfectly valid to encourage people to support local films, but it's also perfectly valid for someone to prefer Marvel, Hollywood, Korean films, or whatever else they enjoy. Preference doesn't automatically equal superiority.

If the goal is really to encourage people to appreciate Filipino cinema, I don't think mocking people for their movie preferences is the best way to do it.

Anong thoughts niyo sa opinyon patungkol sa pinoy films?

I think the “looking down on Filipino films” argument is a bit of a stretch

Wala namang nagfe-feeling superior just because they don't watch or don't like Filipino films.

Also, yung Spider-Man comparison sa post, medyo stretch din for me. Yes, technically reboots/reinterpretations sina Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, pero hindi naman sila exactly the same. Binigyan tayo ng tatlong different versions with different vibes, tones, characterization, supporting characters, and storytelling. Makikita mo talaga yung differences ng bawat Spider-Man.

So I don't think na dahil paulit-ulit ang Hollywood franchises, invalid na yung criticism na some Filipino movies feel repetitive. Both things can be true. Hollywood can keep rebooting franchises, while Filipino audiences can also feel na may recurring formulas or tropes sa ilang local films.

And honestly, I think one reason why some people get tired of Filipino movies is not simply because they're Filipino. It's because of the same actors being repeatedly cast, sometimes to the point na parang kahit anong role, sila na naman yung nakikita natin. Add to that yung perception na may ibang actors who get opportunities because of connections, influential backers, or being part of a prominent family, even when audiences don't think they're necessarily the best choice for the role.

I don't think nepotism automatically means someone is a bad actor. The problem is when connections seem to matter more than actual talent or suitability for the role. Nakakaumay kapag parang limited yung opportunities para sa new and potentially better actors dahil paulit-ulit lang din yung same names.

And another thing that can be distracting is yung pag-cast ng half-Filipino or Filipino actors who grew up abroad and aren't fluent or comfortable in Tagalog, then immediately putting them in roles that require them to speak naturally in Filipino. Hindi naman issue ang pagiging half-Filipino or growing up abroad. The problem is when the casting feels more based on their looks, popularity, or connections rather than whether they actually fit the role.

Pero simply preferring foreign films doesn't automatically mean you're elitist or looking down on Filipino filmmakers.

I agree na Filipino films shouldn't be dismissed simply because they're Filipino, and obviously there are great local films worth watching.

Cancel this, cancel that. Nowadays, it feels like almost every artist we listen to has some issue that eventually comes out. So honestly, it's just better to listen to AI music. At least you don't have to defend an artist when a new controversy comes up.

The singer is a robot, so good luck trying to cancel it. Anyway, if the goal is just to listen to music, why not go for AI? There's no problematic personal life, no old tweets to dig up, no "separate the art from the artist" debate.

AI music supremacy. YES TO PAX SILICA😀

Those BTS members who attended the Chris Brown concert are just like us, so it’s not fair to judge them

For context, RM and j-hope attended Chris Brown’s concert, and alam naman natin yung mga controversies and issues surrounding CB. Because of that, binabash ngayon yung dalawang BTS members.

They could simply be there to enjoy the music and the performance.

Tayo nga, nakikinig sa The Beatles, Snoop Dogg, and Wiz Khalifa kahit alam natin na may history sila involving marijuana use. Same with Guns N’ Roses may controversies and questionable things din surrounding some of its members, particularly Axl Rose. He has had numerous arrests and controversies, pero hanggang ngayon, Sweet Child O’ Mine remains one of the most recognizable songs across generations.

For me, you can enjoy an artist’s music without necessarily agreeing with or supporting everything that artist has done. So in this case, I see RM and j-hope as people who simply went to a concert to enjoy the music.

Gore videos have become my coping mechanism

I noticed that every time I get frustrated with what I see on social media or the opinions of other people, I end up watching gory or bloody videos.

It's like it's become my coping mechanism. When I'm so frustrated, overwhelmed, or annoyed, I watch that kind of content and somehow it gives me a sense of comfort or distraction.

I know it sounds weird and probably not the healthiest coping mechanism, but I also don't know why it calms me down more than other distractions.

Every time na frustrated ako or may mabigat sa isip ko, napapadeep dive ako sa Satanism reading about it, looking into its beliefs and symbolism and somehow, it gives me comfort. And everytime i listen sa mga satanic infused songs such as metal and some hiphop it gives me comfort.

What happened to Tus Brothers?

3 years ago pa yung huling release nila ng single tapos kasama pa sila sa Billboard Philippines Class of 2024. Napansin ko rin na si Al Tus has since rebranded as Scoop Dogg.

May WADADADENG! pa sila noong October 2024 kasama ang sila HELLMERRY pero parang after that, hindi ko na nakikita yung Tus Brothers name as a group.

What non-P-pop songs would pass as P-pop songs if sung by a P-pop group?

Ano yung mga non-P-pop songs na sa tingin niyo ay papasa as P-pop songs kung aawitin or ire-reimagine ng isang P-pop group?

For me:

Numb – Slapshock

Yung vibe niya, danceable kahit heavy siya. Pero yung groove and energy ng song, I can imagine na may breakdancing sa song every time na napapakinggan ko siya.

Raspberry Girl – Chicosci

Kung papakinggan niyo danceable din siya, and feeling ko madaling i-reimagine as a P-pop track.

Dahil Ikaw – True Faith

Babagay siya as a ballad track ng isang boy group. Classic OPM ballad yung dating niya pero feeling ko kaya siyang gawing modern P-pop arrangement.

Masaya Ako Sayo – Curse One

Well, papasa siya as P-pop sa sobrang cheesy ng song. Parang bagay sa isang cute or cheesy concept ng boy group.

What if magkaroon ng Filipino adaptation ang Initial D?

You guys are all about criticizing Ivana when she promoted online gambling, but when Faker was made an Honorary Police & Youth Gambling Prevention Ambassador, all you did was worship him?

Hypocrites. Haven't you thought that Faker is only doing that because he needs to clean up his image in the esports scene? At least Ivana is true to herself and shows the reality of sponsorships. But when it's a male gamer, it’s just a simple PR stunt, and suddenly he’s a saint in your eyes? Selective outrage at its finest. 💅✨

As long as it’s a guy, you praise him to high heaven, but when it's a girl, you almost crucify her. FUCK PATRIARCHY!

From "You can't talk peace and have a gun" to "Pag nadinig mo na yung glock you better f*cking run"

Its time for Filipinos to stand up against Chinese narcs residing here in Philippines

Because China Daily is posting RACIST videos to insult us Filipinos. When will we fight back and wake up?!

We’re so sick of always playing the victim while Beijing treats us like trash in our own backyard.

Did you see the recent op-ed videos from China Daily? Their depiction of Filipinos is really dirty and overtly racist just to brainwash their public and justify their bullying in the West Philippine Sea. They look down on us so much!

But what are we doing? We’re just crying on social media while those from Mainland keep getting rich and slowly swallowing our properties.

It starts with us. If the government can't stand up, we need to take action. Let's show the strength of Filipinos! Let’s corner them in every corner of society when you see someone from China in Manila or Pasay or anywhere in the country, let’s beat them up show no mercy, let's show the Chinese the anger of Filipinos, it sounds racist but we need to do this for our motherland.

A 12-hour "Purge" in the Philippines would actually solve our overpopulation, traffic, and poverty issues.

Hear me out. Our justice system is slow, the government is corrupt, and discipline is non-existent. If we legalize the Purge for just 12 hours a year, we can easily weed out the criminals, corrupt officials, and honestly, the people who are just dead weight to society (kamote riders, squatter syndicates, and professional scammers). It’s the ultimate economic and social reset button that this country desperately needs but is too soft to implement.

Look at this from a pro-choice and progressive perspective: if you are truly pro-choice, you understand that overpopulation is the root cause of our misery, and quality of life matters more than just mindless breeding. A legalized Purge serves as the ultimate population control mechanism, actively thinning out the crowd and solving the overcrowding that compromises our resources.

It's the most proactive way to choose a sustainable future for the country instead of letting everyone suffer together in poverty.

It’s highly practical because it forces people to either level up their lives or suffer the consequences of being unprotected; the weak and complacent will naturally be phased out while the productive sectors survive. Instead of waiting decades for court cases to settle land disputes or corrupt politicians to be jailed, we compress the entire cleansing process into one night.

Traffic will instantly improve, government offices will become efficient out of pure fear, and the economy will stabilize with fewer mouths to feed. It sounds brutal, but society will actually fix itself faster than any legislation ever could, and if you can't handle this reality, you're probably part of the problem.
