Cute Little Compromise 🎤✨

I like that even though Logan didn't care for high society events he made sure to help with Rory's DAR event behind the scenes long after "getting her." It's not about the quality of the sound system for me but the thought put into meeting with Rory about the brands and budgets she wanted then coordinating with the vendor to take something off her plate. (The line about getting it for the price Rory wanted suggests he didn't just pay for it.) At the DAR event, the audio is one of Rory's first items of acknowledgement, so it was an important component. I normally love to see TV couples going to each other's events out of their comfort zones, but realistically that doesn't need to happen 100% of the time as long as they're on the same page. Just a little detail I thought was sweet.

I like how Rory & Logan both enjoyed a good mockable movie 🎥🍿

LOGAN: You up for a movie? RORY: Oh, yeah. Something really bad. LOGAN: Absolutely. Let's check the paper and see if Rob Schneider's still employable. (But I'm a Gilmore)

Rory and Logan's first official date as a couple in But I'm a Gilmore - getting soul food then going out to a really bad Rob Schneider movie - really screams Rory to me. We only get to see so many dates from anyone onscreen, so I like whenever we get these hints into what people have in common. (For those of you movie buffs, any idea what they would've picked to watch in 2005? This makes me nostalgic for the days of checking a newspaper for movie times.)

Also, Logan's line reminds me slightly of this Lorelai line from Girls in Bikinis, Boys Doin' the Twist: So the movie was good. Nice to see Michael Caine working again. Which was sarcastic... 'cause he works a lot... constantly. [Chuckles] Never says "no" to anything, which can be risky, you know? Lowers your batting average.

Lorelai rejecting Jason's talking key has layers 🔑

I disagree with the opinion I sometimes hear that Jason and Lorelai would last long if the lawsuit plotline was just removed. Even if we assume he grew on her after the initial rejection, Lorelai still had reservations months into their relationship.

During Girls in Bikinis, Boys Doing the Twist, Lorelai, who is normally socially attuned to what people are implying, does not pick up on what Jason means by offering her a key to his apartment at all. Committing to him in that way is so far out of her mind that it doesn't register. When Jason explains what he meant at the end of the episode, Lorelai's reaction isn't much more sympathetic. She is even pretty harsh while he anxiously explains they're hitting the point he normally bolts at, considering she has done the two-month cha-cha herself multiple times in the past, according to Sookie. Jason's declaration that he wants to move forward with Lorelai is met with her calling the idea romantic, not with Lorelai saying she feels the same.

View the key in the following dialogue as a symbol of the whole relationship between Lorelai and Jason, and you have her true feelings on the matter - she can honestly take it or leave it.

>JASON: Yeah, it's just a practical thing. It's not a big deal.

>LORELAI: Oh, good!

>JASON: Or you don't have to take it.

>LORELAI: No, I'll- I'll take it.

>JASON: I mean, I know how it is. You've got your keys on your ring just so, and then you put in a new one- it throws off the whole balance.

>LORELAI: Well, if you think --

>JASON: Or you can keep it.

>LORELAI: You sure?

>JASON: If you want.

>LORELAI: I can go either way.

>JASON: It's fine with me.

>LORELAI: Well, which way?

>JASON: Either way.

>LORELAI: Well, I'll take it, [Chuckles] Okay?

Lorelai struggled to give keys to Max when they were engaged, and now Lorelai struggles to accept keys from Jason when he wants to get serious. Keys are a consistent symbol of commitment, and her lack of enthusiasm about Jason's makes it clear why it doesn't conflict Lorelai much to leave Jason once a strong reason to presented itself later on.

I just wrote a short Zikki fic about when they got back together in S2 🧜‍♀️

Thanks for all the love on my last Zikki fic. I have always intended to write more for them and finally had the time and inspiration to. I imagine their early S2 relationship as full of fixing trust issues off-screen because look how secure and happy Rikki was with Zane by the S2 finale. I hope you'll check it out at the link below:

Elliot & Rikki's rejection-to-friendship arc >>>

Elliot pursuing Rikki after she said no was really his one flaw in the series except maybe being too trusting of Kim, and he grew to give Rikki space after the end of Young Love. I don't think Rikki is responsible for Elliot disappearing the way the show wants us to believe, but she still grows from being able to explain to Elliot why she pushes people away. I love that they develop an unlikely friendship when Rikki comes to stay over at the Gilberts' in Fire and Ice.

Lori vs Rory: A Good Witch & Gilmore Girls Comparison

Like Gilmore Girls, Good Witch is a small-town show that stars a single mother who runs an inn while raising a high school daughter. Though it would be easy to compare the daughters -- Rory and Grace, respectively -- I think the Good Witch lead's stepdaughter, Lori, reminds me of Rory more.

Both Rory Gilmore and Lori Russell:

  • are introverted and bookish
  • are journalists who end up more interested in saving their town papers than in their freelance work
  • are critical of family members who pop in and out of their lives (Dad Chris vs Cousin Abigail)
  • are stubborn during family arguments and usually have strong morals (yes, the "usually" is for Rory)

GW is much more wholesome and its overall family dynamics reflect that, so there aren't too many other similarities. If you've seen both, I'd love to hear your thoughts. (I endorse this as a fall watch if you're looking for new shows BTW!)

Rory goes from passing notes between Lorelai and Chris in S1 to refusing to in S7. I wish she didn't have to be the mature one, but I like to see the growth.

Why Dolly Parton was the perfect music choice for AYITL end credits

I'm in the middle of a Dolly music marathon, as I'm sure some of you who are also into both GG and her music are, so I wanted to call attention to this little detail in case you haven't noticed:

The original series begins with The La's singing, "There she goes, there she goes again," while AYITL Winter ends with Dolly Parton singing, "Here you come again." Considering ASP's love of full circles, this lyrical bookend has always felt especially fitting to me.

RIP to an all-around inspiring woman. 🕊️

Advanced Antonyms Game

Like those fill-in-the-opposites worksheets from elementary school, but all grown up.

Parent comments a clue word and the letter count of the answer. Child comments a matching antonym or asks for a hint. The original commenter can provide the first letter of the solution as a hint, if needed. Please avoid answers that just add a suffix (eg satisfied/dissatisfied) or use simple vocabulary (eg warm/cool).

Don't forget to sort comments by New!

Example:

  • Antisocial - 10 letters
  • Hint?
  • Starts with G
  • Gregarious

Paris and Asher: The Cautionary Tale that Could've Been

Every time I watch Luke Can See Her Face, I'm struck by all that the Paris/Asher arc could've been if the hospital scene got to function as the turning point I believe it was meant to be.

Until then, the relationship's red flags are clear enough. The classic illicit kissing, the attention-seeking rants, the friendship-straining drama... It's all there, if written in a somewhat dated way. There is even a great moment at Asher's bookstore reading when the aged character Asher describes sums up what Paris can't yet see about him. But the hospital scene is the only one in which we get to see their actual dynamic and it's, as Paris says, eye-opening.

In this scene, I love the simple symbolism of Paris "pulling back the curtain" to face Asher. I love that in this episode all about the importance of seeing your love's face Paris and Asher sit side by side. I love how it shows the sense of whiplash Rory faces, seeing Paris go from walking in wanting to lead the breakup to walking out going to Oxford. The conversation in the room shows how Asher's smooth-talking works on Paris -- he flatters her, frames his disinterest and fear at being seen with her as lack of time, and turns the question of reassessing back on her, as though he wasn't in control of the whole conversation. It not only drives home how old Asher is but also how young Paris is. She is not so far removed from the high schooler awestruck at Jamie noticing her as she would like others to believe, though the object of her affections has changed. (And how sad is it that Jamie comes to represent the opposite extreme in a partner, making time and traveling to see Paris only for her to just not care for him anymore!)

I have unfortunately not been able to source my theory that Michael York had to leave the show early, but I don't like to think that Asher's untimely death was written just for laughs. Paris' arc seemed to promise an upcoming personal awakening up until S5, and I wish we could've seen that.
