[Lawn care Experts' AMA Recap] Real-World Tips from Pest and Lawn Ginja + HandyDadTV

Across the two sessions, Pest and Lawn Ginja (u/GinjaHQ) and HandyDadTV (u/cheider) shared practical tips based on their own lawn-care experience and time using Navimow across different yard sizes, grass types, layouts, and terrain.
We pulled together some of the most useful takeaways below. As always, every lawn is different, so think of these as practical starting points rather than universal settings.
Cutting height, timing & healthier lawn habits
A lot of the discussion came back to one question: how do you get the mower and the lawn working together?
A few useful takeaways from our experts:
- Lower cutting height gradually. If you want to maintain a shorter lawn, step the height down over several mowing sessions rather than making one large change. A good general practice is to avoid removing more than about one-third of the grass blade at once.
- For Bermuda, getting the lawn in good shape helps the mower perform better. Heavy thatch, matted growth, mounds, and divots can cause the mower to ride higher than expected and affect cutting consistency.
- A traditional mower can still have a role. For a true spring scalp on Bermuda with heavy thatch or matting, Pest and Lawn Ginja recommends doing the initial reset with a traditional rotary mower, then letting Navimow take over regular maintenance.
- Fix recurring low spots rather than mowing around them. Gradually filling divots and uneven areas can improve both lawn appearance and mower performance over time.
- Choose mowing time based on lawn conditions. In hot summer weather, HandyDadTV prefers late-afternoon or evening mowing so the grass is dry and has time to recover overnight. If rain is expected later in the day, morning mowing may make more sense once the dew has dried.
The common theme: robotic mowing works best as frequent maintenance, rather than waiting for the lawn to become tall and removing a large amount at once.
Keep mapping as simple as the yard allows
Complex yards don't always need complex maps.
- Start simple. Rather than creating a no-go zone around every post, tree, or obstacle, Pest and Lawn Ginja recommends starting with a straightforward map and only adjusting areas that repeatedly cause trouble.
- Use channels where turning space is limited. For very narrow passages, a channel can help the mower travel straight through without attempting a turnaround. Keep in mind that a channel is mainly for travel rather than a dedicated mowing pass.
- For steep slopes, direction matters. HandyDadTV recommends having the mower travel straight up and down the steepest section rather than across the slope, with the mowing direction fixed for that zone when needed.
- One large lawn can be divided into multiple zones. This can make scheduling easier and give you more control over which sections mow at different times.
- Adjacent lawn areas may also be treated as separate zones within the same map, provided the mower can travel between them and the combined area stays within the model's supported coverage. HandyDadTV noted that Network RTK can make this type of setup particularly useful.
And for difficult inside corners or flush lawn-to-pavement transitions, manually refining the boundary and using Ride-on Boundary where appropriate may help improve coverage.
Understand what obstacle detection CAN and CAN'T do
Obstacle handling was another major topic, especially around tall weeds, natural lawns, recurring trouble spots, and VisionFence-off zones.
Based on Pest and Lawn Ginja's experience, the mower appears to make obstacle decisions dynamically during a mowing session and may revisit an area when conditions change. However, he has not seen clear evidence that it permanently learns every recurring trouble spot across future mowing sessions.
For areas that repeatedly create problems, the practical fixes are still usually:
- refine the boundary;
- create a targeted no-go zone;
- improve the physical condition of the problem area; or
- mow more frequently so tall vegetation doesn't become large enough to trigger obstacle avoidance.
It's also worth remembering that turning VisionFence off doesn't necessarily mean the mower stops sensing everything around it. Other sensors can still influence how the mower reacts to tall or unusual vegetation, depending on the model.
What About Fall Leaves?
There isn't one universal setting for fall leaves.
HandyDadTV generally prefers collecting leaves rather than mulching them, but suggested that users who want to experiment can test different obstacle-avoidance settings based on their own lawn conditions.
One important caution: reducing obstacle avoidance around leaves may also make it easier for the mower to encounter things hidden underneath them, such as branches, rocks, toys, or other objects.
So if you're experimenting with fall-leaf mowing, check the area first and adjust settings carefully.
A few setup & maintenance details matter more than you think
Small setup details can sometimes solve surprisingly frustrating problems.
- Keep the charging station flat and stable. An uneven installation can make docking less reliable.
- If docking problems keep happening, check the approach area and VisionFence lens. Strong glare or a dirty lens may affect how the mower approaches the station.
- If cutting quality starts to drop, check that the blades are still able to move freely. Grass buildup around the cutting system can affect performance, and X4 owners can also check the available Anti-clogging Cutting Disk and Blade Assembly Plus options.
- For winter storage, remember the antenna position. Pest and Lawn Ginja recommends leaving the antenna stake in place when possible, or carefully marking its location so the antenna can return to the same spot in spring. Moving it may affect the existing map and could require remapping.
A better robotic-mowing experience isn't only about changing mower settings. Sometimes the best fix is changing the mowing schedule, simplifying the map, or making a small improvement to the lawn itself.
