Rails employment feels DEAD in Canada… what language did you pivot to?

Man, I hate to say this, but the number of Rails opportunities in Canada just doesn’t seem to make sense anymore.

A couple of years ago, there was still a decent stream of Rails jobs. Now it feels like the market has completely dried up. Maybe AI and the broader tech slowdown accelerated it, but either way, there just isn’t much out there.

Rails was already difficult to break into as a junior, but even as a senior engineer, there are only a handful of openings. And when they do appear, the requirements are often very specific and the competition seems intense.

I still think Rails makes sense if you’re already employed in the ecosystem or you want to use it for your own products. But purely from an employment perspective, I’m starting to question whether continuing to specialize in it makes sense.

Even freelance and contract Rails work seems pretty thin right now.

Anyways...Enough of the rant.

For those of you who were primarily Rails developers and eventually switched:

- What language/framework did you pivot to?

- How long did it take before you felt employable in it?

- What were the interviews like in the new language?

- Did you have to take a pay cut to make the switch?

TypeScript engineers: what has your recent job search experience been like?

I’m a senior backend engineer primarily experienced with Ruby on Rails, and I’m considering investing seriously in TypeScript/Node.js to broaden my opportunities.

For engineers who already work professionally with TypeScript, how difficult has it been to find a new role recently?

If you recently searched for a role, I’d appreciate hearing what worked, what was difficult, and whether you would still recommend specializing in TypeScript today.

Can Ghost Recon Wildlands actually be played offline?

I own Ghost Recon Wildlands and have it installed on my ROG Ally X.

I want to be able to play the main campaign offline with AI teammates, for example on a plane with no internet connection. However, when I try launching it offline, I get an error.

Has anyone managed to get Wildlands working fully offline? Is there something I need to configure in Ubisoft Connect or Steam before disconnecting from the internet?

I have attached some screenshots. I press play offline and then i get unable to locate uplay pc.

Update

Restarted and was able to see skippable errors. All good now. Thanks a lot 🙏

Malaysia Digital Nomad Visa payment error: “Assessor not assigned, please contact your administrator”

Has anyone encountered this error?

I completed all sections of my DE Rantau Remote Worker (Malaysia DN Visa) application and reached the Payment page.

https://preview.redd.it/xwycd1l7fhdh1.png?width=3456&format=png&auto=webp&s=972841527e2d7083932c00d88c0540d5a54c05df

However, the portal displays:

“Assessor not assigned, please contact your administrator.”

I’m unable to continue with the payment.

I already sent them an email but wanted to check here.

Any help is appreciated.

Recent D Nomads in Peru: how did you buy things online in Peru without DNI or CE?

How do you actually buy things online in Peru?

I'm in Lima on a 2-month stay with only my passport (no DNI, no Carné de Extranjería).

I was hoping for a passport option, but it doesn't appear to be available.

They require DNI, CE, or also RUC. This is Mercado Libre.

But it will probably be the pattern.

How have you managed to buy things online (Amazon, Mercado Libre...)

how can you actually buy things online in Peru without DNI or CE?

Question for foreigners living in or passing through Peru (or locals who've helped one):

how do you actually buy things online in Peru?

I'm in Lima on a tourist stay with only a passport (no DNI, no Carné de Extranjería).
I was hoping for a passport option but it seems that s not really there.

They require DNI, CE, or also RUC

How do people do?

Recent travelers to Peru: how did you get a local phone number?

I'm currently in Peru and running into a problem getting a local SIM card and phone number.

I've visited a few stores, and they keep telling me I need a DNI or a CE (Carné de Extranjería). Can't register a prepaid SIM using only my passport.

I'd appreciate hearing about any recent experiences or workarounds.

Santa Marta vs Cartagena for a 1–2 Month Stay?

I'm planning to spend 1-2 months in Colombia and am trying to decide between Santa Marta and Cartagena.

For those who have spent at least a few weeks in both cities, which did you prefer and why?

Thanks

Does the Coros Pace 3 have a stand-up reminder or inactivity alert?

One feature I use a lot on my current smartwatch is a reminder to stand up and move every hour if I've been sitting for too long. I work from home on my computer all day. and the stand-ups have been beneficial to my overall health.

I am looking to purchase the Coros Pace 3.

Can any Coros Pace 3 owners confirm whether it has:

  • An hourly stand-up reminder?
  • An inactivity alert after a certain period of sitting?

If it does, how well does it work?

Thanks!

My Amazfit Support Expericience. It suuuccks.

* Experience

I bought an Amazfit Bip 6 about 3-4 months ago. After swimming in the sea, the watch screen went completely black a few hours later. The watch still vibrates occasionally but the display is completely dead.

I contacted Amazfit support expecting a straightforward warranty process. Instead, I've spent over a couple of weeks going in circles.

First they sent me a long troubleshooting checklist. Fair enough. I answered every question, provided the serial number, firmware version, proof of purchase, and even recorded a video showing the issue.

Then support claimed they couldn't open my Dropbox link.

I uploaded the video again.

They still couldn't open it.

They asked for a different platform.

I uploaded it to Google Drive.

Instead of confirming whether they actually reviewed the video, they asked if I wore the watch in the shower or bath. I explained that I never did. The only water exposure was swimming in a pool and in the sea, which should be within the advertised 5ATM rating.

After all that, their response was essentially: "Contact the seller."

When I explained that the seller wasn't responding and that the watch had failed after only a few months of normal use, they forwarded my case to a regional agency with no timeline, no warranty decision, and no confirmation that anyone had even reviewed the evidence.

Just a let down. When before i was thinking of upgrading to another model, now i dont even want to deal with them if that s the support you get.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with Amazfit warranty support? Were you eventually able to get a repair or replacement?

Letter of good conduct for Malaysia DN visa (DE Rantau)

If you've applied for the Malaysia DN visa, what did you submit for the "letter of good conduct"?

Applying from Canada and not sure if MDEC accepts a CPIC name-based check, or if they require the full fingerprint-based RCMP certified criminal record check. Also wondering whether it needs to be apostilled.

Planning to email MDEC directly too, but figured I would check here for first-hand experience first.

Thank you.

I run a small cyber consultancy that does foundational security work for SMBs.

I'm thinking about reaching out to brokers as referral partners and want to do it in a way that's actually useful to you, not just one more vendor email to delete.

Some questions:

- What makes a vendor cold email worth a 30-second read vs. an instant delete?

- Is there anything you wish vendors led with (credentials, sample deliverable...)?

- Are there better channels than email (LinkedIn?)?

Not trying to pitch anyone in this thread.

Trying to understand the broker side before I write anything.
