Official GameNative has now XR mode

The official GameNative now has an XR mode: https://github.com/utkarshdalal/GameNative/releases/tag/v1.2.0-prerelease

They decided to use an AI-vibe-coded implementation instead of Luboš’s highly optimized integration. We communicated to them that we considered this a terrible decision and that it would prevent them from using our PCVR integration from WinlatorXR in GameNative, but they went ahead with it anyway.

The GameNativeXR listing is now gone, but there is still another attempt to make it work using our approach: https://github.com/frankr2994/GameNativeXR/tree/stable

Alyx "runs" on Quest 3 (kinda)

Seems legit; looks like someone made their own OpenVR/OpenXR to WinlatorXR XrAPI layer maybe?

Steam Frame will of course always run a bit better for Alyx for many reasons including RAM, but perhaps Alyx on Quest 3 standalone is also something that might be playable

Or Quest 4

40K downloads & news

WinlatorXR has now reached a total of 40K downloads, which is certainly a meaningful milestone and something to be proud of. At the same time, when looking at the download trend over a longer period, it is clear that interest in the project has declined.

The next major update is currently planned for October and will introduce PCVR support, representing one of the largest feature additions to the project so far. After the release, the plan is to take a look on the next generation headsets and see if there is more potential in VR gaming or flat games.

For the current generation of headsets, we want to keep PCVR expectations realistic. The compatibility will be limited to a few games and there will be trade-offs like low framerate and resolution.

GameNativeXR

Out of interest in improving GameNative performance on OpenXR devices, we decided to release and open source our GameNativeXR prototype in hopes that it may provide a starting point for others to encourage and improve the GameNative team's official Quest store version of their app. We wish them the best in this endeavor!

For now you can get our version on SideQuest: https://sidequestvr.com/app/54779/gamenativexr

The real reason why VR is failing

Many YouTubers have weighed in on this topic. Most of them have concluded that people aren’t buying enough games. That’s true, but it’s only part of the problem. The real reason is that there aren’t enough people on the platform.

The Quest 2 was a huge success and attracted many people to the platform. Optimistic investments in VR games began to materialize. The Quest 3 was released, and people expected another sales boom. However, according to a screenshot from a wiki page, the Quest 3 and 3s sold a combined total of 10 times fewer units than the Quest 2. Some sources report that it’s “only” 3-4 times fewer, but even that is bad enough.

Thanks to data from the SteamVR survey, we can say that most Quest 3/3s users are those who upgraded from the Quest 2. These users already have their game libraries and don’t need to spend money on additional titles. In short, there aren’t enough new users, who are key to the platform’s further growth.
