Phd self funded

I'm based in south America. I have a master degree and in my country you can teach at a university with that degree. I'm 4 years doing research and teaching 15 hours/week. A year ago I decided to do a PhD, considering I've published 4 papers, 3 as co-author and 1 as first author in a good journal. A colleague here is my supervisor, he is a respectable and good researcher who I admire and also we have a good friendship. We decided to talk to some of his old mates, they are in the Netherlands and the accept to work with me, considering that I have a proposal and the situation is that I have to publish 3 papers and then I can register for one semester and present my thesis. That's for some reasons. The first one is that I don't want to leave my country for personal reasons and the second is that I do a lot of field work here (for my PhD) . Also I don't have funding more than my salary and small grants that my university gives annually, and help from some undergrads.

I know I don't have much time but I'm working overtime and also having my supervisor close is really good to discuss some ideas and advice. But my main problem is that I can't get funding, in many grants or all of them, they ask you to be formally enrolled in a PhD program to apply. Also I'm working alone most of the time in the lab.

Was a smart decision?

Anyone else here have been in the same situation?

Is there any program that can fund me as a PhD student but with these conditions?

My major is geoscience.

First fravel bike?

Lately, I’ve been seriously considering getting a gravel bike. I currently have an MTB that works fine for weekend rides and casual outings, but for daily use—like commuting to work or riding on the road—I feel like I’m moving too slowly. The roads where I live (in the Ecuadorian Amazon) aren't always in great shape, so a standard road bike isn't really an option. I’ve checked prices here, and the cheapest gravel bikes start around $600; that’s a pretty steep price point for me, given the economic situation in my country. I’ve thought about buying a 1990s 26-inch MTB and converting it into a gravel bike, but I’m not sure how practical that is. Do you have any recommendations? Or perhaps a brand that fits what I’m looking for without the high price tag? I use my bike almost every day and have been wrestling with this decision for months. Thanks a lot.

I’m adding a photo here of my bike
