Invitation to participate as religious trauma in relationships expert!

The purpose of this quantitative study is to develop and validate a scale to measure the use of religious teachings, doctrine, and divine consequences in attempts to control and entrap an intimate partner in the relationship. The resulting scale will provide opportunities for research and clinical assessment of religious coercion in relationships. This study has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Adams State University (IRB 2026-06-30).

Participation includes completing the RCS and a feedback form that includes both quantitative and qualitative sections. It is expected to take no longer than 30 minutes. Participation is entirely voluntary, and you may withdraw from the study at any time. The study is confidential, and your responses will be coded, so they will not be linked to identifying information.

Your participation will ensure that questions are appropriate for the construct based on your knowledge and experience of religious coercion, protect future participants by reviewing for stigmatizing, distressing, or unclear wording and procedures, and select the most appropriate questions to be used. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you are selected to participate, I will contact you within two weeks. All participants who complete the study will be entered into a drawing to win a $50 Amazon gift card following data collection. Feel free to contact Sunny Volano (volanos@adams.edu) or the Faculty Supervisor, Steve Moody (smoody@adams.edu). Please complete the survey below if you meet the criteria: Participants in the expert sample must meet one of three inclusion criteria.

Having clinical experience working with individuals who experienced domestic violence with religious abuse components.

Having presented or published on religious abuse, psychological abuse, or religious coercion.

Counselor educators with expertise in teaching trauma, multicultural counseling, and/or spirituality in counseling.
