Took almost 41 years, but I finished Super Mario Bros for the first time last night.

I remember making it to 8-4 when I was 7 or 8 years old but not understanding the maze and running out of time. Not long after that I got Mario 3 for Christmas and just moved onto that game. I don't know what compelled me to put this in yesterday, but I did and I had a blast.

At my wits' end with this controller

UPDATE: I fixed it. Really random software conflict, but I'll post here in case it helps anyone else.

I have a Logitech A50 headset and use Logitech G Hub software for profiles. By default it creates "A50 Game" and "A50 Voice" profiles. As far as I can tell there is no difference between them, so I I just click whichever when swapping from my speakers to my headset. Usually it's the "Game" profile, but for whatever reason I've been on "Voice" since last week, when the problems started. I figured it may be an issue with my headset due to the clicking noise when I pressed the triggers on my Steam Controller when playing Onimusha. I switched the profile and not only did the clicking stop, it fixed the double input and keyboard prompts as well.

If I had to guess I think the triggers were activating something in the software?

Anyway, hope this helps anyone else having this issue.

Everything was fine for the first few weeks. 2 weeks ago I'm consistently getting the following issues:

  • Double Dpad and button inputs. I'm playing Zero Company leaned back on my chair with my controller and I can't even select menu options since it skips options. It does this about 80% of the time, but 1/5 game boots are normal.
  • Related to the above, but my inputs often change to Keyboard and Mouse. For example, in Onimusha Way of the Sword, I noticed when the double inputs kick in, I see keyboard and mouse prompts. Also pressing the "B" button acts as if I hit escape.
    • I realize this is some sort of issue with the Desktop layer, and Google is telling me to disable it, but apparently Valve no longer lets us do that???
    • Also related, whenever the above happens (double inputs, controller behaving like M&K) pressing the triggers makes this awful clicking noise in-game until I restart. Likely a game issue but this doesn't happen when I switch to my Dualsense.

I'm about to unplug this thing and go back to my Edge. Anybody have any idea what I can do here?

I just finished Shining Force for the first time. What a banger!

I have trouble even thinking about downsides. I guess the music gets a little repetitive (there's like 4-5 songs and every town has the same music). And I guess the story is a bit simplistic.

But the gameplay, artwork, and design are all immaculate. I love how it respects the player's time and lets you keep all your levels ups even after a loss. I love how the enemies all seem to know the game rules and dog pile the main character whenever he gets close (lol). I love how snappy and smooth everything is.

This is now up there with my favorites on Genesis. Really happy with this purchase.

Finished Super Castlevania IV for the first time today

Stellar game! I've finished Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, and Bloodlines in the past and I'm glad to notch this one as well. From what I understand people seem to call this one the "easy" one but I disagree, the last 4 stages absolutely destroyed me, repeatedly. Bosses weren't that tough outside of the final one but the platforming and insta-kills from falls and spikes were absurd, especially towards the end.

Curious about how this game lands in this sub. Did you like it? What are your thoughts on the difficulty?

Tales of Phantasia has been completed. Good game, held back from greatness by a few major flaws.

It's beautiful, the combat is fun, and the story is actually pretty decent. I played on a repro cart with has the "DeJap" translation, which is actually really solid.

What holds it back for me are the random battles, specifically the frequency of them. The game is borderline unplayable without spamming Holy Bottles to reduce the frequency of encounters, and you can only hold 15 of them. This is excruciating, especially when walking all the way back through a completed dungeon (which the game forces you to do, there are no ropes and no fast travel), or when you're lost in a dungeon and the battles keep slowing you down and making things worse. It is so bad that, for me at least, it brings the game down from a 9/10 to a 7/10.

Still enjoyable, of course. For those that completed it, what did you think about it?
