Chemistry useful at all?

My son applied to a few schools and wants to do Nuke E. His top choice for Nuke is still unconfirmed if he’s in or not but he was accepted to a school for chemistry.

Would a chemistry degree be useful at all in the field? We are risking chemistry or no school at all because the chem needs an answer and full tuition paid before we may get an answer from the other.

Lunch Lunatic

This was on threads. Can I get a pass since this is on theme for this group?

The last line is cut off. He’s asking if worth ethic is completely dead. Because this person wants to use their lunch hour as - gasp! - an hour for lunch.

Anyone know the ingredients to The Mule’s Orange-Tarragon Vinaigrette?

As the title says. I’m going to make a beet salad this weekend and like the vinaigrette on The Mule’s salad. There are a ton of variations for me to try, and I don’t mind trying a few, but I wondered if anyone wants to give me some pointers.

The oil, Dijon mustard, honey and tarragon are a given. Orange zest or orange juice? Tarragon vine-gar* in addition to the fresh tarragon? One recipe online calls for fresh ginger, but I don’t taste any of that in theirs.

In case you’ve gotten this far and care, I’m putting the dressing on top of mixed greens, roasted golden and red beets, chunked coconut, goat cheese, and pecans. I foresee an upgrade to spiced pecans in this salad the next time I make a batch. I might sprinkle a hint of chili powder on top.

*note. For some truly bizarre reason I can’t fathom, that word typed properly without the dash wasn’t allowed. Wtf???

Saturday lunch suggestion for people who don’t like each other?

My son graduates tomorrow. Ceremony is on 30th & Council and we live ~50th & Portland. People are driving from Texas to come, so I want to minimize driving. We will have 8 or so people who may/not want to talk to each other. I’m looking for something casual & inexpensive. No reservations required. Relatively close so I don’t impose another hour of driving back-n-forth on our out-of-towners.

I was thinking Harvey or the Collective, but they can both be busy, right?

Any other ideas in Bethany, midtown, or around Baptist hospital? (Don’t say Louie’s on the lake. It sucks.)

Anyone have a tip for temporarily tying off yarn in between sessions?

I’m making a large blanket out of one yarn, so no granny squares to sew together later. When you finish a granny square, you cut the yarn and pull it through the last loop, which creates a stable finish to the piece until you’re ready to weave in the ends.

What is the equivalent on a large piece where I don’t want to cut the yarn? Making a knot in the yarn will still pull though my last stitch. This blanket is already getting unwieldy enough that I’m ripping out stitches as I move it around when I’m not working on it. Super long yarn doesn’t help, because any tension will still undo some work.

Looks like thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon. Don’t miss the new start time.
