Does fret sprout go away?
My MIJ 2024 FSR Traditional II Jazzmaster seems to have developed a bit of fret sprout. I strongly suspect it’s due to the dry winter. Oddly enough, I changed the strings not too long ago (flatwounds) and took the opportunity to treat the fretboard with lemon oil, so it definitely wasn’t dry — or at least not excessively dry.
But my music room has been pretty dry lately (below 40% RH), and I decided to buy a room humidifier to deal with it.
In the meantime, I’ve treated the fretboard with lemon oil again.
So here’s my question: will the fret sprout gradually improve on its own once the guitar is back in a properly humidified environment, or is it pretty much certain that it’ll need a fret dressing and that I should just take it to a luthier right away?
On a side note: the fretboard on this particular Jazzmaster is pretty odd. It seems to be rather “soft.” Easy to mark. It’s rosewood. Out of all the guitars I keep in that room (US & Japanese made) it’s the only one having this issue.
