My verdict on Gibson Firebird pickup in a Fender Jazzmaster.

Greetings once again fellow offsetters.
So I bought this Gibson Firebird pickup off a guy in Oslo who had swapped his set for a set of PAF’s.
I had it laying around for some time before trying it out as I didn’t know much about them and thought they were just like regular mini humbuckers.

Boy was I wrong, and positively amazed.
As many of you already may know — the Firebird pickup is pretty unique in it’s own way. Construction wise it has two alnico bar magnets placed like rails on a hotrail, and probably some more mojo I don’t know about cause man, those rumours are true …
It sounds like a Telecaster on steroids.

(BRIDGE PICKUP) SOUND:
With the traditional set of 1MEG pots in my favourite JM it shines and chimes beautifully when you pick lightly, but snarls and twangs when you dig in. The highs are crisp and metallic, the lows are boxy(?) I know, all these weird ways of describing sounds, right? Boxy in a good way, like the acoustics of a wooden box — but sharp and clear, very articulate.
It’s a very clean sounding pickup, but not transparent sounding like a lipstick pickup. Way more in the ballpark of a Tele bridge pu. Not microphonic at all. Quiet, no squealing on high gain.

SERIES/PARALEL SWITCHING:
Middle position paired with the Curtis Novak JM-V does not deviate much from a traditional middle-position JM sound. Very much in the same ballpark, maybe just a tiny bit louder. Very sparkly and and clean. In series — it’s a whole other beast. (Wiring two pickups in series produces a longer path with increased resistance, adding volume while preventing the highest frequencies from getting through. With series wiring, the output of one pickup goes into the input of another pickup, while with standard parallel wiring, each pickup takes its own path to the output. Besides being noticeably louder, series wiring emphasizes low and midrange tones). The Firebird pickup is noticeably louder and hotter than your standard single coil pickup, even a bit louder than my loudest Tele pickup. Series switching really brings this to the front, so now you have a really loud guitar that can easily be compared to a more Cobain-esque sound ala SuperDistortion pickups and alike. Those sparkly highs are now gone, and in it’s place you’ve got more of a big humbucker sound. It’s actually comparable to a hot neck pickup in a hollowbody guitar. But if you dial down that bass on the PTB (passive treble and bass) system it sounds more like a Les Paul. Either that or with tone controls/EQ.

GAIN/OVERDRIVE/FUZZ:
Played through high gain Fender Amp and/or Boss BD2– Sounding like a cross between a P90 and a Telecaster pickup, but as expected— no hum.
It has more body than a Tele but more sparkle than a P90. Good sustain, mid range is just perfect, meaning it’s very balanced. Lots of character when you strum open chords, those highs really shine. Less spiky than your traditional JM-pickup. Single-notes sounds very Tele-ish. Big Muff at 10 sounds just as’ you’d expect it to — big and wooly but with clear note definition, quite trebly even when drenched in that good ol’ shoegaze.

10/10 score, perfect sound for my rig and personal preference.

Oh and here’s a video showcasing the guitar. I am not a pro YouTuber and didn’t have any good mics at hand so it is what it is.

600€ for a Classic Player Jaguar worth it?

Basically the title. I've been offered a Classic Player Jaguar in Candy Apple Red (two single coils) for 600€. The guitar has a very tiny chip on the finish, but is otherwise in really good condition. Is that a good price?

My Dream Guitar

This is a concept of my dream guitar. I mostly based it on the original Jag-Stang. I'm not sure if this is the finished design or not.

Well I got the Swampstang back from a refret....

Got the 77 back from a refret, it plays a whole lot better but has a slight buzz. Doesn't seem to be enough relief provided by the truss rod , you can't hear the buzzing while amplified , but it still bothers me.

I also may just not be a fan of the 7.25 radius ... but damned if it doesn't look bad ass lol

Help on deciding between Jaguars

I’ve decided I want a Jag but I’m having trouble deciding between a couple. I don’t know much in terms of build quality, etc with guitars.

I found a Jaguar MIJ JG66 manufactured about 2004 for around $1000. But I’ve also seen a Squire Jaguar down the street at a guitar shop for around $500 maybe $600.

What’s the difference in quality here?

The Lancaster

Thought you perverts might be into this.

Made about 17 years ago. Body and neck from the excellent but now defunct USACG.

I liked the idea of a Telemaster, but never liked just slapping the ruggedly utilitarian (ugly) face of the Telecaster onto the body of a Jazzmaster. I always felt such a guitar, had it existed, would be more stylish. So there’s more Mustang influence here.

Wilde L200TL bridge, Oil City something or other strat pickup in the neck, kindly string wound by Ash since it’s coverless. 25” conversion scale. Stainless steel scratch plate from a catering fabricator offcut. Knobs from an x-ray viewer.

I had in mind the vibe of an Elvis Costello JM but a bit more like a well-worn table in an old man pub.

The big wood grain “eye” near the arm contour used to bother me but now it’s all part of the personality. It sounds good an’ all.

Please help I’m going crazy (Vintera II Mustang setup)

This is a Vintera II MIM Mustang. It plays well, but the strings have always hit the back of the bridge, no matter what I try. I’ve tried full pocket shims, little cardstock shims, and even reversing full pocket shims. No matter what shim and bridge height I test, the strings still hit the back of the bridge.

Totally wired guitars on YouTube says mustangs should have a minimum space of 2mm between bridge and pickguard for best tuning stability, so I’ve been respecting that. I tested bringing the bridge down to 2mm, and had to use a 1 degree shim reversed in the pocket to get there. Strings still hit. This is what’s shown in the photo.

I’m honestly baffled. Do I just need a bridge upgrade? Do other people have this problem?

Squier Paranormal Electric VI mod ideas..

I love this body shape.. some questions if anyone can help.

I would want to change the neck - do you think a Mustang/Jag neck would fit?

Also, any idea of the routing? I might wanna change the pickups.

Question for you all

I picked up this beauty in immaculate condition for a very reasonable price and have been thinking about changing out the bridge and pickups.

The reel question is, should I keep this offset Jag original, or should I upgrade pu's to either Seymour Duncan SH-1/SH-5 (PAF style) or go for more of a aggressive aggressive Cobain style with DiMarzio PAF in the neck and Super distortion in the bridge 🤔

How to find a replacement pickguard for a Jag that actually fits?

I want to find a mint pickguard (and, ideally, matching pickup covers) for the Jaguar on the left here, which is a CIJ (not sure of exact age as acquired secondhand. The last time I bought one it was just not quite right in terms of the screw hole positions. Any idea who might sell them, or what the key is to speccing one? I am in the UK, fwiw.

Picked up the refinished body and neck last Friday. All wired up and I'm beyond stoked with how it turned out.

Refinished my Mustang

Picked this Fentona Mustang off of eBay earlier this year. It was a combo of two separate squire guitars that this chap put together, with a charvel pickup in the neck and a pair of black wolf pickups in middle and bridge. He refinished the headstock with his own snazzy logo.

It was a stock thick poly sunburst finish. I decided to strip it back to wood and stain it. It was my first time doing anything like this ... it won't win any prizes but I'm happy with it. I was really surprised to see that there were veneer layers beneath the poly - the sunburst and woodgrain beneath the poly was just a paper thin layer. After much heat gun and sanding, I did a coat of wood stain, a couple of danish oil and one varnish - each with a day or two drying time between them.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy. This and my Guild Starfire are the two guitars I use the most now. I love this thing. It shouldn't play and sound as good as it does!

Squier Jazzmaster 60's Classic Vibe Competition Burgundy

Just figured I would post my Squier Jazzmaster. It has not been modded yet but it's something that I am considering doing over the winter.

I don't hate the sound but it's definitely not my favorite. It plays fairly well but definitely feels different from the other Stratocastes and Telecasters that I own. I've been thinking of upgrading the current style pickups or possibly putting in some P90s since I don't have a P90 guitar yet. Open to suggestions on recommended mods.

My orange competition Mustang

I named him Azzy after my orange tabby who crossed the rainbow bridge a few years ago. Azzy saved my life both mentally and physically so I bought this guitar as a tribute. I also got my guitar tech to put his paw print inside of the neck joint 😻
