I’m probably not the first nor the last person to admit that the idea of Godzilla and Kong having an entire trilogy of crossover movies never made a lot of sense to me. I can understand from a commercial standpoint, because anyone who’s tried to get rich off of any artistic medium knows that money talks, and bullshit walks, given how much GvK and New Empire have made at the box office.
But creatively, what was the point exactly? Godzilla vs Kong came out and was a big hit for being released in the middle of a pandemic, fair enough, but I was a little confused when The New Empire was confirmed to be another crossover, because now Kong would have more crossovers than solo movies (at least as far as the MV is concerned) and even more so when Supernova was revealed, because now that same sentiment could be applied to Godzilla! And if the leaks for Supernova are to be believed, there’s a good chance that the MonsterVerse as a whole will have more crossovers than solo movies after that…
Speaking of those leaks, they expose a lot of good material for solo projects. Godzilla dealing with loneliness and Kong trying to bond with Suko sound like they could work just fine as their own separate films, but NOOOOO, we have to combine them into one movie and risk one plot line overshadowing the other because we won’t sell as many tickets otherwise! Which is a total shame because Godzilla has gotten the shorter end of the stick when it comes to these movies lately.
After Comic Con came and went seemingly without a peep about GxK Supernova, I asked the sub when they thought the full trailer would come out, and pretty much everyone agreed that it would be attached to either Godzilla Minus Zero(since it’s also a Godzilla movie), or Dune part 3(since it’s also being released by Warner Bros) or maybe some point in between. But either way, that means a *19 month gap* at most between the teaser video for the movie, and its first official trailer. (Side note: I asked the sub if they thought there’d be a Supernova teaser at Comic Con, but it was already in the back of my mind that the title reveal video WAS the teaser)
Honestly, it just recently dawned on me as a red flag because that’s a hell of a long time to keep casuals interested in an upcoming film, let alone the full trailer for it. I mean, KOTM’s first trailer didn’t come out until 11 months ahead of opening day, and that left room for audiences to lose interest and at least half a dozen other films coming out in the same quarter to steal its thunder. Because of that, it ended up being the lowest grossing movie in the MontserVerse! (second lowest grossing American Godzilla movie after G98, too!)
Because of this, I am a little concerned that the same thing is going to happen to Supernova, and it is starting to feel like Legendary is getting a little cocky with the series at this point(especially if you were to take those leaks for granted, yeesh)
I wanted to make this a poll but I apparently don’t have the necessary Reddit karma for it
Like, will they have any trailer-worthy effects shots ready by then, or do they not want to upstage Minus Zero?
I just got some 4k Blu-ray Discs for my birthday the other day, but we haven’t upgraded to 4k yet, so while two of the sets had the movie on both a 4k disc and a Blu-ray, but one had a 4k with the movie on it, and then a Blu-ray that just had the special features on it. WTF do I do now!?
