Complete beginner and I feel like I don’t know anything + thinking about buying a bike

So a bit about what I need I guess -
I really just want a bike that I can ride around my town when I’m hanging out with my friend (mostly on pavement), then MAYBE go riding in open fields with my dog if that is something I can find in a bike. Lately we’ve been going on rides ranging from like 10-20 miles, I don’t really plan on riding anything over 30, atleast on the regular. I’d prefer flat bars but I’m not overly worried about that. Also showing how little I know, I would like to be able to ride standing up in small intervals, I have no clue if that’s even something that has any relevance to choosing a bike at all…

I’m 5’ 5” and 180lbs

Also I’m looking at a price range around 300-600 dollars if that’s at all possible. I know it’s going to severely limit my options and probably quality but I don’t think Id be able to commit to a better bike for a long time.

Appreciate any help since I have no idea what I’m doing.

Sports to try out?

Just looking around for some sports to try out with her. I know about running, weight pull, spring poles, that sort of thing. Ideally I would like to do something pretty reactive dog friendly, as she is not super friendly with other dogs but is manageable.

Also, how to build her toy drive? We play tug but it’s usually hit or miss whether or not she really wants to, and when she does it doesn’t last very long.

Running sports with a bully

So long story short: I want to start canicross, then eventually move to bikejoring with my American bully. She is reactive, which is a bit of a concern but I know others have done it. Also looking for advice on a harness. Ideally I’d like to be able to do bikejoring and use it for when she’s on a longline as well (which is why I was maybe leaning towards the NS rush harness rather than freemotion)

Long story long:

I have a 5 year old female American bully. I have done a tiny bit of canicross in the past but the only command we’ve really gotten to at all is “go on” her cue to just run. No others aside from basic obedience unrelated to the sport itself. I would love to get back into canicross with her but I’ve also taken up biking so I was thinking about bikejoring in the future. Nothing crazy at all, maybe just a couple miles on the paved trail in my neighborhood.

A small issue I’m sure will be a concern is that she is reactive to a lot, but mainly other dogs and wildlife. Lately she has been doing better not chasing squirrels, but she does fixate. Obviously I do plan to keep working at it before I even consider getting on a bike with her, but I wonder if this will be asking too much of her. If anyone has experienced joring with a reactive dog, I’d love your input.

Another point, but less important, is that ideally I’d like to buy a harness that she can wear while playing in a long line and to bikejor. I was looking at the rush harness rather than the free motion (also bc I’ve heard the fit might not be great for a bully breed) but I’d also take other ideas.

Then again, any tips or advice would be super helpful and appreciated, anything about canicross or bikejoring at all!!!

Favorite/best doodle grooms you’ve done?

I’m not a groomer, just a doodle owner. I’ve seen sooo many posts about matted doodles and shave downs, but I’m interested in the grooms that can be done on well-maintained dogs!

Would love to see your favorite work, whether it be the usual doodle cuts, poodle-inspired, or completely different!

First volunteer orientation today! What to expect?

Hi everyone! Tonight will be my first time volunteering, really in any capacity.

I love dogs, have always had dogs, and want to be a dog trainer when I grow up. I am super excited to volunteer but am (hopefully) understandably nervous. I know my fair bit about dogs, that part I’m not worried about.

I am 14, so I don’t expect to handle dogs for a while or at all, although my shelter does allow us to volunteer independently after 13. My first question is that it says you can do that “after training” so will I need an adult to stay for the duration of the orientation, and my “training?”

I’d also like to know just what to expect in general, what my duties would be, how to interact with people lol.

Anything is appreciated

How dumb is this? Grooming ideas

Owner here. Well, caretaker really.

So…I have a doodle. An OES x Standard poodle to be exact.

She’s been shaved down all but every single time she’s gone to the groomers before, which is exactly how it should’ve gone. Unfortunately I don’t think any groomer had straight-up told my mom that it’s neglect…so it just kind of continued (not at all to blame the groomers, I just think she would have respected someone in the profession over me). I didn’t realize I could actually do anything about it until I got my crap together and started brushing her daily…after I came here asking for help. Which, I got so much of. I really appreciate everyone who sympathized while I complained about how much I hate having a doodle with parents that don’t take her needs seriously. It was probably around 6 months ago and I was able to talk my mom into getting her shaved down in February.

Anyways…I’ve been line brushing her daily and I’m 99% sure she is completely mat-free. I don’t want to be the bystander that just says “it’s not my job” so I’ve been trying my best to keep up with it and make sure she’s comfortable. The last thing I want is for her to have to be shaved down again bc of matting. My mom told me she’d take her to get groomed again soon 🤞so I’m thinking about ideas for a groom that is not completely shaved down.

I realize this may be completely stupid…but I’ve landed on the PWD lion cut. I’ve thought about a modified German poodle cut, but she doesn’t really have the hair that would make that look good (or maybe she does, open to the idea still if it could work.) My main reasons for the PWD cut is because

• The hardest part about brushing her is her back legs. She’s older so doesn’t love standing to allow me to do it as throughly as I’d like to, and they genuinely seem to tangle overnight. I know this is normal. Shaving the back end would obviously alleviate this problem.

• I have really started to enjoy brushing her. It’s something I can do at the end of the day in 10-20 minutes and feel satisfied doing. Sooo I do want to keep some length somewhere so I still have that to brush.

• i LOVE getting to know the history behind breeds and certain grooms, temperament, etc. I used to be a “poodle cuts are too petty looking” person, but learning the reason behind the groom has honestly helped me fall in love with it. So I love the thought behind having a breed-specific look, even if she’s not that particular breed. Maybe it’s just me wanting not to be a doodle owner…who knows. But she’s a great dog so I can’t complain.

• I do appreciate any insight, but I just don’t love the idea of having her taken all the way down into a kennel cut. Probably selfish but I just don’t want her to look shaved, it’s kinda boring ig.

• also, since she is a bit overweight, I was thinking the shaved back end would help monitor her weight a bit better because I’ll be able to see her hip tuck without all the hair making her look even bigger.

• alsooo, I’ve looked at a ton of different doodle cuts and most don’t have hair as straight as hers, which makes me hesitant to really consider any of them.

Anyways. I know a lot of people think the lion cut is silly looking but it’s about more than just looks for me, although I’m totally open to criticism or other suggestions.

I was also wondering if it would cost a lot more to have this done (or if a pet store salon would even be willing to do it) rather than a complete shave down.

Thanks in advance, open to any and all thoughts!

Photo is blown out btw.

“She’s not fat, that’s mean”

I think she’s fat. She has a bit of a hip tuck but not much. I guess she could be just a bit on the bulkier side depending on the percentages of either breed…but I think she needs to lose quite a bit of weight. I’m thinking of getting her in a PWD lion cut as well, that way it will be easier to monitor her weight.

Others in my family disagree and do not think she is fat. Apologies for the title, but that is a daily exclamation.

The last slide is my other dog, just for a reference as to what I’d consider good weight…just wondering if I’m wrong on this and how to go about it.

Thinking about cuts

Hi everyone! A bit of an odd post maybe…but I’m trying to figure out a cut to get for my sheepie.

I know this won’t be popular in the group…but I do not love owning a doodle. Dont get me wrong, she is an amazing dog, but having learned more from the dog community the past few years, I do not agree with doodle breeding. Anyways, that’s not super important, but ig a small bit of context for my options. For some more context, I have really struggled with her maintenance needs in the past. she has been shaved down multiple times but my pride is basically in her coat now, and this is the first time I’ve been able to keep it super maintained this long. I want to keep it that way, while still having some length to take care of.

I’m deciding between either the breed standard PWD cut, or a sort of poodle cut.

The PWD lion cut would be great because it

• keeps the back legs and hind end clean, making it super easy to maintain. The absolute hardest part about her maintenance is her back legs, they genuinely seem to mat overnight.

• still a good bit of length on the rest of the body to keep up with and “show off.”

• clean face and (adding) clean feet, to make maintenance really easy. My parents love her beard but I can’t stand it. It just gets nasty so quick. It’s also been a struggle clipping her nails because the hair gets in the way. Clean feet will eliminate this.

• the cut seems like it would work well with her hair type, as opposed to many poodle cuts.

The poodle inspired clip (single short length all over, clean feet, longer cuffs on legs, shaved ears, topknot-ish thing) would be good for

• essentially all the same reasons except it is even easier to maintain.

- unfortunately though, it will lack length to show off and honestly I don’t love the look on her. (Worth mentioning she is a good but overweight and I’m trying to change that, I don’t know how much I love short lengths on fat dogs lol)

First picture is my dog, second is the PWD clip (would have small changes), last is the poodle clip

I would appreciate any thoughts, so long as it pertains to the cuts in particular - not discussing doodle breeding ethicality. TIA

Dapple longhair dachshunds - ethicality and frequency?

Hi everyone.

Someone I know is interested in dachshunds as a potential breed - but they are dead set on a miniature longhair, in dapple. I am trying my best to steer them towards an ethical breeder rather than a backyard breeder, which I know will be a challenge :/

I am not super familiar with the breed, but fairly well-versed on ethical breeding practices. I noticed it is very uncommon for longhair dapples to be shown in conformation - is this for a reason or just by chance? Why are solid colors favored in show?

Then, I also visited the breed club and very few of the longhair breeders produce dapples. reason for this?

I would just appreciate any education anyone may have on the ability to get a longhair dapple ETHICALLY.

TIA!

Feel like the lockout of my knee is hurting my swing (or maybe just my knee lol) - is it bad/how do I fix it?

I’ve always locked out my knee completely and honestly I don’t really notice it until I’m watching my swings back. It just looks wrong to me and theres not many examples of high-level players with this movement. Just wondering if and why it happens, and what can I do if I should fix it?

*also adding that I am not looking for advice on the rest of my swing unless it is directly causing the lockout of my knee - I do have a hitting coach that I am currently working with.*
