What’s it like feeding your donkeys?

This post is for anyone who wants to participate!

- size of your donkeys
- what your feed routine is daily
- what do feed them?
Example: Type of hay, minerals, balancers and how much! Do they have free access? Do you weigh it out? Use slow hay feeder bags?

It’s great to share what works for your donkeys so owners can get ideas from others!

Feed question

If I have a standard jenny 3 years old and a baby 11 month old; mom needs to loose weight, but baby needs more nutrition. How do I feed them so she looses weight without compromising weaned baby. I can’t really separate because they’re bonded and go stir crazy without each other.

Bought some slow feeder bags that are coming into the mail today. One for the whole bale of straw and two hanger for the hay. Also bought a fish scale to start weighing the amount I feed them. However, the issue I’m running into is how do I even make sure they stay at the right hay bag haha.

What we have is wheat straw, Teff and orchard. They usually share half a flake of teff in the morning with a sprinkle of orchard and have free access to wheat straw.

They haven’t been released to my back dry pasture because I’m still earning their trust getting them to leave the paddock area is still scary to them. Can’t wait for the day I can release them to the back acre!!

Can you tell me what you’re feeding and how much to your donkeys? I need recs.

Rescuing a free neglected senior horse?

I’ve never owned a horse before, I have a pair of donkeys, “cousin” of horses lol. Someone locally posted this horse for free. The story is the owner can’t take care of him anymore and left him at a boarding facility. They said he’s 27 years old. Is in good health but can’t keep weight on. He’s free, should I just take him and try to help him to get him better? They just want a good home and I have an acre of pasture I’m not using so he’d just live his life out there. My neighbor has horses that line our fence line too so he’d have fence friends to

What am I signing myself up for? I really don’t want to get a horse I find out will need to be euthanized that would just crush me.. obviously it could be a possibility i just need opinions, we care for our animals deeply.. so its hard for us to watch him end up somewhere he shouldn’t. Maybe I should contact a rescue? Idk?

Update: first of all, thank you for all the comments regarding this situation, it’s very sensitive and sad all around. I got. A lot of responses, it’s hard to comment back on each person. So here’s a mass update on the horse.

- his name is cowboy, he was recognized by a person who’s ridden him before, but that a couple years ago did not look like that condition. Some info has surfaced, like I said previously he’s 27 years old. I’ve been going back and forth with the people who have him on their property. So far have been responsive and transparent and are good people stuck in a ugly situation, they never have owned a horse before, have it houses with a Ram who could be stealing his food, the actual owners moved to another state and are MIA, So they got stuck with this horse and don’t have the time or funds to rehabilitate it at this point, he’s friendly and back in his hay day was fully broke. Someone even posted a picture of him a couple years ago, I’ll put it on the comments, hopefully you find it. He looked magnificent. Fast forward: he’s still friendly, optimistic and fighting but obviously loosing. They had a vet come out (unsure of date) and said that he needed more calories so they placed him on 100% senior pellets which he’s improved on energetically. No hoof care since 4+ months ago. Has deteriorated drastically in the last month - they said they only had him for a few months and were doing a favor for these people who just basically dumped him on their property now at this point. They have offered to pay for his stable mix long term to help with the cost of food or to be put down humanly if need be. I contacted a reputable equine vet, apparently he’s been seen by him before, when he was loosing weight, he was diagnosed with a inoperable kidney stone (which leads me to think he has severe kidney failure or disease) which could be also why he’s wasting away. Obviously given his age it won’t be reversible and go downhill as time passes. Those are some updates I have. I made an appointment to have the horse seen on Friday at noon by the vet he will dictate the next move for this horse (keep fighting vs euthanasia). He will be going to their property. With all the feedback I’ve gotten I’d hate to have my donkeys get sick. I will be getting a coggins test if it’s looking like he can have a turn around, they are offering to pay for the vet to come out as well. I also think the stress from the move with strangers will make him deteriorate more if not just kill him. Will continue giving updates as we go. Personally, I’m not sure if I can take this on financially, I would love a happy ending who wouldn’t but we’ll see if this is even a fight worth fighting for given the info we have now. They want the best outcome for this horse, they’re just at a lost of what to do and agreed there in over there head. Again thank you for all the replies. There was a lot of intense responses to the ad and it was removed so whoever reached out to him to save the horse hopefully have the same intent as I do and can take this head on especially if they have experience dealing with this sort of a case

Update #2.
Cowboy was recognized by someone online who boards horses and also trained him to ride back in 2022. She has experience with rehabilitation and has offered to take his case head on. The vet will still be coming out there on Friday at noon to assess the situation (@ boarder facilities own cost). But at this point if he’s savable he will be going to someone with experience to help him In his current state of condition locally. All great news. We asked for updates and to leave us as a plan B if all falls thru. Thank you everyone!

No hay for overweight Jenny

Hi, I just adopted an overweight Jenny and her 10 month old baby (weanling), I believe the original owners fed alfalfa with unlimited pasture this spring. I’m really trying to avoid laminitis so I’m doing some research on how to get her weight down very gradually, but honestly just not go into the direction of gaining more weight would be ideal for starting out.

Here’s a picture of her. I’m just judging her weight by her thick lumpy neck. It’s very hard.

They’re in a 100x20 feet corral because we’re still trying to get them friendly and trusting to us. If i release them in our back pasture they’ll never return back 😂. Currently our back pasture is discd so no green weeds just arid dried out weeds.

Current feeding: 1/2 cup in AM of essential K for big momma and 3-4 cup essential K for baby. 1/2 a flake of orchard hay (about 1-2lbs) sharing with her baby and unlimited wheat hay in a slow feeder hung in different areas of the pen.

My hay dealer tests her hay. She offers Teff hay and orchard, Timothy is seasonal so probably not the best choice. I have the hay analysis pictures.

What do you think. Should i switch to Teff? It’s all around lower NSC but lower protein so I would imagine I’d need to up the essential k for added nutrients for either both of them or atleast the baby.
They are standard donkeys.

Give me tips or advice on feeding them especially big momma.

Also the title got messed up it’s supposed to say recommendations for hay for overweight Jenny it won’t let me correct it.

Post pics of upgraded Infotainment you’ve installed!

Just bought a Toyota Tunda 2017. Needs some upgrading to do inside.

Post pics and names of the infotainment systems you’ve upgraded your tundras with!

Any regrets or gripes on the brand you chose? Like lags or delays or spotty?

I upgraded my 4Runner infotainment system with a Toyo but it lags. Great graphics though, won’t be using this brand again.

Donkey getting attacked by flies

We adopted two donkeys. One of them is so timid. I’m not sure what her past life looked like but currently she’s in a good home with us. About 5 days ago we got them. She’s getting eaten up by flies. Won’t let me help her. I even tried putting the spray on the towel to just dab around her face. She won’t even approach. I fear conjunctivitis is slowly starting. I’m not
Sure what to do. The flies are like. 4-5. Not really much but driving her nuts. Eyes are watery. And I see redness in the inner corner.
I have spray. Traps. And even a fly mask. She just won’t let me get anywhere near her.

How to spot a healthy donkey

Hi, this is a last minute post. Tomorrow we’re off to go look at a pair of donkeys a person is rehoming. 2 jennies. A mom (estimated 5-6 yo) and her daughter who’s 10 months old. The owner has had them
Vet checked, Hoof care done every 6 weeks, vaccinated, teeth checked, and dewormed in the last 2-3 months.

We’re new to donkeys.
What are some things we should look out for to get an idea that we’re getting a donkey in good health or a donkey that’s not in good shape.

Example is I read that you should check there neck crest - if it’s fallen over their over weight.

Iron effects

13m old. Ferrtin 3, started on 15mg iron everyday for 2 weeks so far.

Ever since a couple days after starting iron toddler has been SUPER CHARGED with energy hahaha. Hair is finally growing in and not so pasty white!

However downfalls are she’s so supercharged she’s like wired & can’t turn her energy, jitters or mind off. The last 1.5 weeks it’s been a FIGHT to get her down for naps and bed time and now she’s waking up throughout the night, she falls back asleep but then wakes up frequently.

I’ve tried shortening her wake windows, extending her wake windows, doing her normal 2 naps and even trialed her 1 nap. I don’t cap her naps, I just let her wake up naturally because that’s what we’ve always done. She’s never gone over 2 hours in naps whether it be 1 or 3 naps. Soonest wake up is 45 mins.

Anyone else have this same struggle since starting iron? When should she like level out ?

Minerals/salt recommendations

Located in Cali.
What mineral brand do you use for your donkeys?
Loose vs block ?

Red vs Himalayan vs white salt?

From what I read i offer salt and minerals separately.

Any recommendations for items at TSC?
Looking for the brands you use that’s accessible

Saw one person recommend California trace. Any reviews on that.? Pellet, powder? Which one?

Currently we’ve tried the mamazing ultra air ($180) and the Mompush lithe v2 and Mompush nova.
Currently at this time we returned the nova (seat was just too reclined for our fomo toddler and she was holding herself up. The lithe v2 we loved because of the snack and drink option and the canopy shade cover was big, however downfall the storage capacity was limited (max4lbs) however we’d pack it as tight as possible and the wheels were just too thin and not sturdy. We’re onto our mamazing ultra air. The fabric is really soft and we upgraded the seat to add the extra cushion however we don’t think we’ll need it it’s pretty cushiony on its own, not a total 90 degree angle but good enough for a FOMO kid who loves to sit up and see the world, canopy shade is decent but the mesh on the top is great but not because it lets sun thru when it’s really sunny but it does keep it airy, feels very light but almost cheap light, storage on the bottom is “fair” for a travel stroller. Wheels are just ok but we’re still trialing it, not terrible but not spectacular

Anyone else have recommendations for “BUDGET FRIENDLY” Travel strollers. We like to keep it under 300 because we don’t want to baby it like our uppababy v3 lol. It’s meant to be “beat up” for the on the go life

Ugh… crashing out.
Anyone else have a toddler with really low ferritin? Waiting for the dr to call us to see what the next plan of action is.

Recommendations of: iron and vit c rich foods or meals your LO loves.

Also, my kid eats scrambled eggs, beef and tons of broccoli everyday! - hates strawberries and citrus!
