Disappointed - what’s wrong with my milk?

My baby will be 6 weeks on Saturday. She’s gaining weight well and is a proper little chubs, she’s my 3rd baby and breastfeeding has come (thankfully) very naturally to me and I’ve BFd all three times - no issues with supply or latching.

This time round, there’s a huge problem. My baby is just so unsettled on my milk, she has horrible reflux, her skin is so spotty, and after every feed grunts, twists and turns and is so miserable until she’s thrown up.

How can that be? Surely the milk my body is making for her should be the best thing for her? That’s what we’re told, breastmilk is exactly what they need but in my case at the moment, that’s making her worse.

She’s on meds for her reflux but I haven’t seen much difference and then I’ve been told to go diary free because she could be CMPA - the research I’ve done though suggests a breastfed baby being truly intolerant to cows milk protein is extremely rare (like 0.5%) so I don’t think it’s that? She doesn’t have the other “symptoms” that come with cmpa like bloody or mucous stool.

I’m just feeling disappointed that our journey hasn’t gone smoothly - I hadn’t envisioned getting her on formula but I think I will need to try something thicker or contains no milk to see if it helps her symptoms.

I hate seeing her so upset. Just wondering if any mummy’s have been through similar with their babies and what helped?

I’ve been dairy free for a week now and truly I’m quite miserable - little things that sparked joy like having cups of tea at the end of the day, a bit of chocolate here and there, and having to make separate meals is draining. I have a 17 month old and a 7 yr old and this is really hard work.

Sorry rant over!

Aptamil pepti 1

Hi everyone, just looking for some advice/reassurance from parents who’ve been through something similar.

My daughter is 5 weeks old and has had severe reflux literally since birth. Not just normal baby spit-up - she vomits after most feeds. Sometimes it’s immediately after feeding, other times it’s curdled milk an hour later. She’s often uncomfortable, congested/gurgly and really struggles to lie flat.

She is breastfed and because CMPA has been suspected, I’ve completely cut dairy out of my diet. Our GP has also started her on omeprazole.

The problem is I really need to introduce at least one bottle a day so I can get a bit of help with feeding/rest, and the GP prescribed Aptamil Pepti 1 (previously called Pepti/Pepti Junior I think?).

We’ve been told she needs to stay on it consistently for around 4 weeks to properly assess whether it helps.

But after reading experiences online I’m now really anxious because so many parents say the formula is really thin and made their reflux babies vomit even more. I genuinely don’t know if I can cope with her reflux getting any worse than it already is.

Has anyone had a baby with suspected CMPA + reflux who used this formula?
- Did it help?
- Did reflux initially worsen?
- How long did it take to see improvement?

Would really appreciate hearing honest experiences because I’m feeling quite overwhelmed with it all at the moment.

5 week old breastfed baby with severe reflux/distress- omeprazole not helping yet. Anyone been through this?

I’m really struggling and looking for advice/experiences from other parents. My daughter is 5 weeks old, exclusively breastfed, gaining weight, but from basically birth she has been bringing milk back up after almost every feed - sometimes immediately after unlatching, even if I keep her upright for 20–60 mins.

This isn’t “spitting up.” She is uncomfortable and distressed. She cries and strains a lot, goes red in the face, sounds constantly congested/gurgly (almost like milk/phlegm high up in her nose/throat),
seems uncomfortable after feeds, throws up fresh milk multiple times a day!

We tried infant Gaviscon with no improvement, and she’s now on omeprazole (day 3, once daily) but so far I’m seeing zero change. Im also trialling dairy-free as CMPA has been mentioned, but it’s still early.

Has anyone had a baby like this where Omeprazole took longer to work?

I’m exhausted and hate seeing her so uncomfortable. Any experiences or advice would really help

5 week old, sleeping 5 hours at night. Is this okay?

My little girl is 5 weeks today - this week she’s had two nights where she’s slept for 4/5 hour stretches. I have been feeling on edge about leaving her that long without milk, so I’ve woken her up both times for a feed.

She is exclusively breastfed. It’s now almost 1.30am and she’s been asleep since around 8.30pm so I’m thinking to wake her up? It’s not even like she’s awake much during the day or for her to be ‘tired’. She’s probably awake only for a couple hours during the entire day!!

She’s not massive, she’s almost 9lb but she was born 5lb 12 oz - so she’s gaining weight well but still absolutely tiny in my eyes.

When I spoke to my health visitor last (about a week ago, she advised to feed her every 3 hours).

I’m just wondering if anyone has been in same boat and did you let your little ones sleep through if they did longer stretches from very early?

4 week old reflux/vomiting… at breaking point. Anyone been through similar?

I’m honestly at the end of my tether and really hoping other parents who’ve been through something similar can share what helped.

My 4 week old has had reflux pretty much since birth, but it seems to be getting worse as she gets older. This isn’t just the odd spit-up - she is vomiting after almost every feed. Sometimes it’s curdled milk, sometimes it’s literally fresh milk that comes straight back up the second I hold her upright to burp, like the whole feed has just come back out.

She is exclusively breastfed.

I feel like I’m doing everything I’m supposed to:
- Holding her upright after feeds (20–30 mins, sometimes even an hour)
- Offering smaller/more frequent feeds instead of long sessions
- Burping regularly
- Using a wedge under her bassinet
- Keeping her in a bib pretty much constantly because of how much she brings up
- We’ve been prescribed Gaviscon Infant sachets, but honestly administering it between breastfeeds feels almost impossible and completely unsustainable. Boiling water, cooling it, mixing it, syringing it in… with a newborn and a 17-month-old it’s just taking over my life. And she rarely takes the full amount anyway.

None of it seems to make any difference.

She now pretty much only sleeps comfortably on an incline on me or my husband. The second she’s laid flat again, she vomits. It means one of us is constantly holding her, and it’s becoming completely unsustainable.

I also have a 17 month old, and I’m heartbroken because I feel like I’m missing this time with him. I need both hands, I need to be able to function, but all my energy is going into managing her reflux, changing clothes clothes, and trying to keep her comfortable.

My GP prescribed the Gaviscon, but when I originally asked about other medications they seemed hesitant because of her age.

She is gaining weight, although I’m not convinced it’s as much as it should be.

I guess my questions are:
-Has anyone had a baby like this where it was more than “normal reflux”?
-Did anything actually help?
-Did your baby need a different medication?
-Did anyone switch from breastfeeding to thickened formula, and did it help?
-At what point did gp take it seriously and investigate further?

I’m only 4 weeks in and I already feel completely drained. Please tell me there’s a way through this.
