Insta360 Ace Pro 2 in the Redwoods
For anyone curious about the photography side of the Ace Pro 2, I just uploaded a video sharing my experience after using it as my primary digital camera during a week-long trip through the Redwoods.
This isn’t a typical tech review. It’s a photographer’s perspective on what surprised me, what worked well, what didn’t, and whether I’d actually trust it on a serious photography trip.
Enjoy!

I went to the Redwoods recently and brought my AP2 with me. I’m loving the shots from the camera 📸💖
Ace Pro 2 Cinematic Lens
I brought my Ace Pro 2 on a road trip to the Redwoods a few weeks ago and decided to experiment with the cinematic lens.
I mostly use the AP2 for video, so I haven't spent much time with the photo mode. The cinematic lens seemed like a fun way to create a unique look straight out of camera, but I'm still trying to figure out whether I actually like the effect.
One downside is that using the cinematic lens means shooting JPEG only instead of RAW, so there's much less flexibility in post.
Normally I'm a big fan of lens flare when it works with the image. But in this shot, the flare arc across the top of the frame feels a little distracting to me rather than adding to the scene.
Am I being too critical?
For those of you using the cinematic lens regularly, what kinds of scenes or lighting situations do you think it works best in? Do you embrace effects like this, or do you try to control them?

Really enjoying shooting the Monopan but they are soooo hard to come by 🥲 I love the soft tones and the high resolution. Wish I could get my hands on more of them 🥹

Some faces feel like they’ve already lived a thousand stories before you ever raise the camera

I know most people use action cameras for sports or fast-moving stuff, but I’ve honestly been loving the Ace Pro 2 as a POV camera for photography.
It’s so quick to throw on around my neck while I’m out shooting street photography, events, or just walking around. I barely think about it once it’s on, and it’s been a really fun way to document interactions and moments throughout the day.
Also, shooting in 4:3 has been great since I can easily crop for both horizontal and vertical edits afterward.
One thing I ran into though: I’m in the U.S. and got the octagonal lens version, so the standard Insta360 ND filters didn’t fit. I ended up buying the original square lens guard from B&H for around $20 and swapped it out, and now the Insta360 ND filters fit perfectly.
I actually made a longer video showing how I’ve been using it if anyone’s interested:

Curious how many people here are also using the AP2 more as a POV/documentary camera instead of an action cam. What video settings have been working best for you guys?
