BVB paid around €25m each for their two new young Greek AMs. Next in line is probably Beier, who can play pretty much every attacking midfield position. After that, the competition is basically between Chukwuemeka, Incacio and Albert. All three are still unproven. Albert with a real shot here, I think.

Do you think a UEFA transfer tax could help stop football players from being treated more and more like financial assets?

There is not necessarily much value for football in having such high transfer fees, because a lot of the money is simply moved around between big clubs or companies. In many cases, the money leaves the game completely and ends up with holding companies, investment funds or other businesses that just take the profits.

For example take the three biggest transfer deals so far this summer:

  • Morgan Rogers: V Sports Holdings (Aston Villa) to Clearlake Capital investment fund (Chelsea)
  • Elliot Anderson: Evangelos Marinakis, billionaire (Nottingham) to Abu Dhabi Group (ManCity)
  • Yan Diomande: Red Bull (Leipzig) to Real Madrid (fan-owned)

A 5% tax just on these 3 transfers alone would have generated around €30 million that could have been redistributed across all UEFA leagues. Would it even legally possible?

[calcioefinanza.it] From Burke to Diomande: In eight years RB Leipzig has grossed over a billion from sales

Full Google Translate Version in English

From Burke to Diomande: the transfers of value

The first piece of the sales series was in the 2017/18 season. Oliver Burke, who arrived from England, was sold to West Bromwich for a figure in the order of 15-17 million euros. From that moment on, Leipzig began to ring a series of increasingly profitable operations.

Among the most significant cases is Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian defender, bought by Dinamo Zagreb, was transferred to Manchester City for 90 million euros in summer 2023. Even more recent is the divestiture of Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United. The Slovenian striker left the Bundesliga for 76.5 million euros.

Also passed from Leipzig the world champion Dani Olmo. Arriving from Dinamo Zagreb, he showed his value in the four German vintages before the transfer to Barcelona for about 61 million.

Operations also with Italian clubs. Ademola Lookman, was bought by Atalanta for less than 17 million, valued in Bergamo until becoming one of the protagonists of the Nerazzurri victory in the Europa League. The Belgian Loïs Openda, on the other hand, has switched to Juventus with a total operation of 43 million euros, becoming one of the most profitable disposals in the history of Leipzig.
