Does anyone know what is planned for the archives under this proposal? Are they expected to be moved somewhere, sent to the National Library of Scotland, for example?
This is an official gov.uk petition asking HMRC to develop its own government-owned, free software for Making Tax Digital (MTD).
There is currently no official, free HMRC software for submitting quarterly reports to satisfy the requirements of Making Tax Digital, even though HMRC already provides a free digital platform for submitting online self-assessment tax returns.
All of the many software options that HMRC says can be used for MTD are provided by banks or private companies. While there is some free software available, its use is conditional on whether you have an account with a particular bank, whether a given company decides to change its offering down the line and start charging for services that used to be free (which is typically how private businesses make money on software - they hook the customers in with a free offering, make them dependent on the software and then start charging subscription fees that become more and more extortionate with time), etc.
It is baffling that such an essential service should be fully privatised. If MTD is mandatory for certain categories of people, there must be a free, official government service to allow people to comply with the legislation.
Do I have to call Hyperoptic's customer service to renew a broadband package? Can the renewal not be done online, like when switching electricity providers?
I am currently on a monthly rolling plan and would like to either get on a 12-month plan with Hyperoptic or switch providers but I would prefer to do this online if at all possible.
Is there a French language equivalent of the following idioms referring to famous literary or historical figures in this manner?
In both cases below, the literary figures are so famous that everybody is familiar with them, having had to study their work at primary school.
Were there perhaps some old idioms that referred to literary or historical figures that are now obsolete?
- [Russian] Кто будет посуду мыть? - Пушкин.
Who will do the dishes/housework/any bothersome task? - Pushkin. (used when the speaker can’t be bothered to do something and wishes somebody else, in this case, the famous poet Pushkin, would do the task in their stead).
- [Portuguese] Vai chatear o Camões!
Go bother Camões! (means something like ‘go bother someone else, leave me alone’, and refers to the famous poet Camões).
