Cannonball run home

Cannonball run home

Looks like my plans are changing so I’ll be making another run home in September. I’ve taken the highlighted route and it wasn’t bad but it’s a lot of 2 lane and bump in the road towns through Wyoming. Being this isn’t a site seeing trip do I just say screw it and take the southern route which is I 80 to I 35 and hope to make up the time difference? It’s been over 20 years since I’ve been across the eastern half of Nebraska and close to 10 since I’ve been through Iowa.

Getting it on paper

When we bought our 20 acres the goal was to make room for friends and family to enjoy it as well. We currently have an 800 square foot cabin and a 28’ camper on the property but wanted to add a small permanent guest cabin. The plan was hatched to build a 12x16 with an 8x12 loft over the bedroom and a second 8x12 over the porch. I typically build small projects with a few rough sketches and just go for it but decided I should do some actual plans for this one. It’s definitely time consuming but should make it easier when ordering materials and actually building it. Floor and 2 long walls drawn up so far with end walls up next.

Unpopular opinion

You probably don’t need a diesel pickup to pull your camper. I said what I said. We’re not living in the 90s anymore. Modern gas engines are making the same torque and more horsepower than the diesel pickups did 25 years ago and with diesel prices higher than gas prices the numbers just don’t work like they used to. Granted for those of you who feel the need to drag a 15,000 pound trailer over the Rockies every weekend it’s a different story but you are in the minority of RV owners.

On the other hand, are you using too light of a pickup? Just because you have the power to pull it and can easily stop it doesn’t mean you have the right truck. Do you bounce all over when you hit those bumps at bridge decks? Does your trailer push you around corners? Does your truck and trailer wiggle all over when you pass a semi or when they pass you? When you just look at the numbers on a spec sheet published by an engineer who’s never actually towed anything you’re only seeing part of the picture.

There are so many variables to determine what truck you need to pull what trailer it can be overwhelming for new owners. On top of that there are so many different opinions online that add to the confusion. When asking for advice the more details about your plans the better. When giving advice, ask yourself if your experience matches what the other person is doing.

Battle Pass Wyoming

Beautiful day for a short scenic drive over Battle Pass. Located in southern Wyoming and winding through the Medicine Bow National Forest it was roughly a 3 hour drive up and over then back. Lots of beautiful places to pull off and enjoy the views. Well worth the drive if you’re in the area.

Wyoming regs question

I’m spending the summer in Wyoming and was planning on doing a little fly fishing. I read that the ground beneath the water is privately owned unlike many places I’ve fished in the past. While looking at OnX hunt I see stretches of river where the property lines don’t actually go into the river so are these areas open to wading while fishing or is this just something messed up in OnX? I am finding a few public use areas and several BLM areas in close proximity but haven’t looked into access yet. Just don’t need a trespass violation while I’m out here. Pic for reference

Running board recs?

Working on getting my new 3500 set up. Starting to look for steps/running boards that don’t get slippery when wet or frosty. I would really like something more along the lines of a running board with an expanded steel step.

Exploring Wyoming

Took the day and drove from Saratoga to Casper and hit a bunch of historical and geological sites. Great day out exploring our temporary home state.

Medicine Bow National Forest

We’re spending the summer in Wyoming and decided to do a little exploring today. We took Wyoming 130 through the Medicine Bow National Forest. Still a fair amount of snow and closed side roads but looking forward to going back and checking out more of it over the summer.

Hope for the best

Far from ideal conditions but my first food plot is planted. A mix of corn and soybeans in this spot should provide some forage for early bow season and mature corn during rifle season. Would have preferred some drier soil conditions but it’s my last day here for a couple months so gotta do what you gotta do. One more plot and some trails to seed with some mixed grasses then on the road until just before hunting season

I’m looking at add solar, LiPo4 batteries, and a small inverter to my older FayFlight 5th wheel. Just looking for enough for a small fridge, tv, and light load miscellaneous. Is there anything that’s really that much better than others or just grab something off Amazon?
