Homeless father of two rebuilding after a hit-and-run

Hi everyone. My name is Andre. I’m 35, from Philadelphia, and I’m a father of two sons. Writing this is uncomfortable for me because I’m used to trying to figure things out on my own, but right now I genuinely need some help.

Two weeks ago, I was homeless and sleeping in my car. It wasn’t just the place I slept — it was also how I made money. I was using it to do Uber Eats and Grubhub while I applied for jobs and worked toward getting back into steady employment.

Then someone hit my car and pushed me into the back of a SEPTA bus.

Thankfully, I’m physically okay. But losing the car changed my situation immediately. In one accident, I lost both the place I had been sleeping and the only way I was bringing in money.

Right now I have no income and I’ve been staying in shelters.

I’m still trying to keep moving.

I borrow my niece’s bicycle to get to job interviews, physicals, appointments, and anywhere else I need to go. It isn’t ideal, but if I have somewhere I need to be, I’m doing what I can to get there.

I also want people to understand that I do have skills and a work background. I’ve worked as an automotive technician, went through automotive trade-school training, and have hands-on experience with vehicle maintenance, diagnostics and repairs. I’ve also been pursuing mechanic opportunities and working toward getting my CDL because I’m trying to build a career that can give me steady income instead of continuing to live day to day.

I have two sons, and probably the hardest part of where my life is right now is not being in the position I want to be in as their father. I’m not able to regularly be with or talk to them right now. I want to get back to a point where I have stable housing, steady income, and the ability to actually support them and be consistently present in their lives.

I’m not saying any of this to blame anybody else for where I am.

I know my life is my responsibility.

I’m applying for work. I’m showing up for interviews. I’m working toward my CDL. I’m pursuing opportunities in the mechanical field. And right now, when I have to ride a bicycle across the city to get to something that could move my life forward, that’s what I’m doing.

What I’m asking for is a bridge.

The money raised would help me with food, transportation, keeping my phone on so employers can reach me, job and CDL-related expenses, basic necessities, and eventually getting into stable housing. It would also give me a little breathing room while I work toward getting my first steady paycheck again.

I don’t expect strangers on the internet to solve my life for me. I’m trying to do that myself.

But right now I could use some help getting from where I am to where I’m working hard to go.

If you’re able to donate anything, I truly appreciate it. If you can’t donate, even sharing the fundraiser could help it reach somebody who can.
